Chapter 80: Chapter 78: Mutation
"I don't know either," Magnus replied, shaking his head helplessly.
He wasn't entrely lying.
Although he had foreseen certain things through psychic powers, he truly wasn't sure how to solve the issue.
Russ stared at Magnus for a moment and asked;
"Maybe Father has a way. How about I ask him for you?" Russ asked.
Magnus was speechless.
Did he really need Russ to help him contact Father? Among all the brothers, Magnus was by far the one who could contact their father most easily!
"What I meant was, Axis might be able to help me," Magnus explained.
Hearing this, Russ immediately nodded. He knew magnus was gettinga at this.
Ki could be used to strengthen the body and had tremendous destructive power, but Axis had never said it could increase the success rate of the Astartes implantation surgeries, though.
"Lord Magnus! Have you ever used a med-pod before? If you have, would using a med-pod improve the surgery's success rate?" Axis, who had been sitting to the side, finally spoke up.
Back then, Axis had made the med-pod available precisely to increase the success rate of Astartes surgical modifications.
After waking up, he hadn't paid much attention to the med-pod's progress, nor did he know if the Imperium had managed to reverse-engineer it.
"What's a med-pod? I've never heard of such a thing," Magnus asked curiously, shaking his head.
"Ahem! Axis's med-pod hasn't been successfully replicated yet. The only things we've managed to copy so far are energy weapons and the power-scouter's detection feature," Russ said, coughing lightly beside them. He had the urge to smack his little cub in the back of the head.
Back on the ship, he'd forgotten to mention this to Axis.
The med-pod was something even the Emperor had been researching all this time.
But up till now, nobody had found a way to reproduce it.
Currently, the few med-pods that did exist had only been used for the Custodes' modification surgeries.
As for regular Astartes, they weren't qualified to use the med-pod.
After all, Axis had only provided a handful, all stationed on Holy Terra for the creation of Custodes.
Upon hearing this, Axis curled his lip.
Figures!
Imperial technology never failed to disappoint! They'd been studying a tiny little med-pod for over twenty years and still couldn't replicate it!
Axis had thought that, aside from the FTL engine, which even the Emperor would have to take time ot crack, the rest of the Dragon Ball high-tech he'd shared should have been manageable.
But in the end, the only thing successfully copied was the energy gun, and even then, the production was so low that only company commanders and above got them among the Space Marines.
Even the Custodes only got them in small numbers! For the rest of the tech, there hadn't been any progress at all.
Russ, sitting to the side, sighed helplessly and looked at Magnus, speaking slowly.
"I'm sorry, Magnus. The med-pod was something Axis and I discovered on Fenris, a relic of the Dark Age of Technology.
"It can heal even the gravely wounded. As long as someone isn't completely dead, it can basically bring them back.
"But this thing is an Imperial secret. The fact that Axis told you about it is already a breach of protocol."
Magnus was dumbfounded, he hadn't expected that the Imperium actually possessed something that could raise the success rate of Astartes modification surgeries.
But just like all those other relics from the Dark Age of Technology, the Imperium could acquire them, but was completely unable to reverse-engineer them!
[A/n: Even in the 30K era, the Imperium had obtained many relics from the Dark Age of Technology, but successful replication was exceedingly rare.]
Humanity's technological decline was simply too severe!
"Thank you for telling me about this. Since it's an Imperial secret, I won't ask about it again," Magnus said with a sigh, a hint of resignation in his voice.
At that moment, Magnus felt a touch of sorrow.
He hadn't expected that the father he trusted most would keep something like the med-pod a secret, not even telling him a thing.
If they'd had med-pods, and if they were truly as miraculous as Axis claimed, then the young psykers of Prospero undergoing Astartes surgery wouldn't have died in such large numbers!
"Magnus, even with the med-pod, if it can't be mass-produced, it's useless for Astartes modifications.
"There are only a few med-pods in existence right now, far from enough to transform a single Astartes legion," Russ said, shaking his head.
When it came to Astartes modifications, thousands, even tens of thousands, could be done at once.
The number of med-pods would have to match that scale; otherwise, they were utterly pointless.
The Emperor had once conducted experiments, and if a med-pod was used, even older humans could perfectly receive all 19 Astartes organ implants.
But to try to reverse-engineer this thing, you had to take it apart, and once you did that, there was no guarantee you could actually replicate it.
So, the Emperor prioritized giving it to the Custodes, hoping to enhance as many of them as possible first.
The Astartes implantation procedure was already relatively mature, so there was no rush to replicate the med-pod.
"I understand, brother. I was just getting a little too anxious," Magnus nodded.
"Magnus, where exactly is the problem? On my planet, the success rate for Astartes modification is quite high.
"As long as the candidates are the right age, the success rate is eighty or ninety percent, with very few deaths," Russ asked.
Axis also nodded beside him. At this time, during the 30K era, the Astartes transformation surgery wasn't nearly as brutal as it would be in the 40K era.
There weren't all those endless trials and ordeals to torment the new recruits under the pretense of selecting the very best.
Since the Emperor had created the Astartes, that meant this was a technology that could be mass-produced.
The Imperium during the Great Crusade was nothing like the decayed empire it would become ten thousand years later.
"I really don't know how to explain why! Maybe… never mind!" Magnus suddenly trailed off.
Sitting nearby, Axis had already guessed what Magnus wanted to say. The Thousand Sons did indeed have a problem.
At the very start of the Great Crusade, the Thousand Sons were a relatively normal Astartes legion, not particularly remarkable compared to the others.
But only five years later, the warriors in the legion began to spontaneously develop psychic abilities, followed by a terrifying wave of degenerative mutations.
These mutations affected their bodies, turning the Thousand Sons into horrific monsters.
As the Crusade continued, more and more Thousand Sons began to mutate, most ended up becoming inhuman abominations.
Those who survived the mutations, however, grew even stronger, developing ever more powerful psychic abilities.
In a way, all the problems of the Thousand Sons could be traced back to their gene-seed, and to Magnus himself.
After Magnus, their Primarch, returned to the legion, he actively sought ways to prevent his sons from mutating.
But in the end, even after sacrificing one of his eyes to the chaos gods, nothing changed.
Even by the 41st millennium, there still wasn't a good solution to the Thousand Sons' mutations.
Their Chief Librarian, Ahriman, the most powerful psyker among them besides Magnus, had only managed to create an army of empty suits of armor.
However, there was also a theory that Magnus's gene-seed had originally been normal, but had been cursed by the Chaos Gods with a Warp-based malediction.
That was what led to the Thousand Sons' mutations.
Those who survived the ordeal gained even greater psychic strength, growing more and more like Magnus himself.
As for those who failed to endure the mutation, their fate needed no explanation.
Seeing the sorrow in Magnus's eyes, Russ felt moved.
His own gene-seed also had its issues as his descendants could turn into werewolves.
So he could understand Magnus's pain!
Russ wanted to comfort his brother.
Magnus was the most powerful psyker among the Primarchs, possessing the greatest psychic talent, and most of the Thousand Sons had psychic powers, many of them awakening their abilities after joining.
Could it be that Magnus's gene-seed was somehow tied to the Warp?
Although their father had forbidden them from delving into anything related to the Warp, after taking in Axis and coming into contact with his Ki, Russ's own psychic abilities had also awakened, even if he had never actively used them.
Axis's Ki could effectively resist the corruption of the Warp. That was something their father had personally told him.
So maybe Axis could give it a try?
Perhaps the power of Ki could alleviate the problems with Magnus's gene-seed.
"Magnus, during the Astartes transformation, at which step is the mortality rate the highest?" Russ asked.
"The first step. The implantation of my gene-seed cultivated Secondary Heart carries the greatest risk. Out of ten candidates, nine will die, experiencing some sort of mutation. Sometimes, none survive.
"But as long as someone successfully adapts to the Secondary Heart, the rest of the procedures go about as smoothly as with any other legion," Magnus replied.
"Magnus! Maybe we can try using Ki!
"It's a special ability mastered by Axis, and it can effectively resist Warp energy. During the surgery, we could infuse your gene-seed, or the recruits themselves, with some Ki.
"Let's see if they can survive and increase the success rate of the transformation. What do you think?" Russ suggested.
