Chapter 63: Chapter 63: Escape from Wayne Manor
Bruce, fleeing from the manor, spotted a strange man in the garden. He was clearly with the killers.
The moment Bruce saw him, he was also spotted.
Bang!
A bullet fired in Bruce's direction. Fortunately, Marcus's training had prepared him. Though panicked, Bruce remained composed. The instant he saw the gunman raise his weapon, he ducked behind a nearby stone statue.
Soil sprayed everywhere as bullets struck around him. Hiding behind the statue, Bruce gasped for breath, his heart racing with fear.
Though he remembered Marcus's combat teachings, the fear of death still spread through him as he faced gunfire.
"Teacher said I must always stay calm. Only by remaining calm can I find opportunities to win."
Silently encouraging himself, Bruce drew a kunai from his box. Though not sharpened, it could still serve a purpose. If he could disrupt the shooter's aim, he might create an opportunity to escape.
Taking several deep breaths, Bruce calmed his inner turmoil and threw the kunai.
Bang!
As the kunai flew, gunshots rang out. Bruce seized the moment when the attacker shot at his projectile, rolling into nearby bushes.
He had successfully evaded the killer's fire. Now he just needed to quietly slip away from Wayne Manor.
Moving slowly through the shrubbery, Bruce spotted another stranger guarding the estate's gate.
"There's a killer ahead," Bruce hesitated in the bushes. "Teacher, what should I do..."
He missed Marcus. If his mentor were here, these killers would be dealt with easily.
Pulling out the special kunai Marcus had given him from his leggings, Bruce gripped the handle tightly, his eyes hardening with resolve.
The man guarding the gate was merely keeping watch. With enough caution, escape should be possible.
Returning the kunai to his leggings, Bruce approached quietly with his rapier.
A kunai flew from his hand, striking the man hard in the knee joint. The sudden attack made the man's legs buckle, sending him crashing to the ground.
Bruce seized the opportunity to rush forward, employing Marcus's Cunning Fox techniques to stab the man's joints with his rapier.
Schlick!
The rapier pierced flesh, blood flowing from the wound.
"Ahhh!!!"
The intense pain made the man scream. Hearing this cry, Bruce dashed out of Wayne Manor.
The sound had attracted attention. If he lingered, he might die.
Moments after Bruce escaped, the gunman who had chased him through the garden arrived at the gate. Seeing his wounded companion, he didn't stop but rushed directly in pursuit.
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Gunshots rang out behind Bruce, forcing him to dart from cover to cover as he fled.
"Police station! Inspector Gordon!"
Bruce ran frantically, diving into Gotham's maze of streets and alleys, making his way toward the police station.
Hiding in a damp, dark alley, Bruce leaned against the wall, gasping for breath. The rapier in his hand still bore the man's blood.
"Alfred, you must hold on until I return!"
He had expended tremendous energy. To shake off his pursuers, he had run for what felt like miles through Gotham's labyrinthine streets.
"You look terrible!"
A voice suddenly sounded behind him, startling Bruce. He swung his rapier, nearly stabbing the speaker.
When he saw who had spoken, he was surprised to find someone not much older than himself. He stopped the rapier just short of striking.
Selina jerked her head back, pinched the blade's tip with her fingers, and moved it away from her face.
"I remember you weren't this tough last time. You were still crying."
Having witnessed the tragedy in Crime Alley, Selina recognized the boy before her. Her surprise came from seeing his transformation.
In Crime Alley, Bruce had been just a helpless child. Now he was fighting back.
"You're..." Bruce recognized her voice as memory returned. "You're the little thief my teacher called down from the stairs?"
The words "little thief" irritated Selina, who glared fiercely at Bruce.
"You said teacher? That weirdo is your teacher?"
"He's not a weirdo. My teacher is incredibly skilled. He taught me many things. If he were here today, I wouldn't have been driven from my home."
Now Selina grew even more curious. She knew Marcus was formidable, but where had he gone? And why was Bruce being hunted?
Just as she prepared to ask, the sound of hurried footsteps approached.
"They're coming!"
Bruce's face paled as he prepared to flee, but before he could move, Selina grabbed his arm.
"This way."
Pointing to the fire escape above their heads, Selina nimbly jumped up, grabbed the ladder's edge with both hands, and pulled herself onto the stairs with a swift movement.
Bruce followed her example, quickly climbing after her. Though not as agile as Selina, he managed to ascend the stairs and follow her to the rooftop.
The moment they reached the roof, several black-clad assassins entered the alley below. Finding no trace of Bruce, they hurriedly departed.
"Who are they? Why do they want to kill you?" Selina asked curiously.
"I don't know," Bruce shook his head. "I was practicing my teacher's lessons at home when these people suddenly broke into the manor. If Alfred hadn't covered for me, I might have been killed. I don't know how Alfred is doing now."
As he spoke, Bruce moved toward the stairs. He still needed to reach the police station and find Inspector Gordon.
"Where are you going?" Selina asked.
"I have to get to the police station and find Inspector Gordon."
"I'll take you. There's a shortcut."
Selina's shortcut involved traveling across rooftops. Without the constraints of alleys and streets, they could reach the police station much faster.
The two continued climbing over rooftops, making their way toward the Gotham Police Department.
...
The Kansas Museum had drawn large crowds for its exhibition of Greek antiquities. Everyone had clearly come out of fascination with ancient history.
"Are these Greek artifacts really so captivating?"
After a mild complaint, Marcus entered the museum.
The Greek antiquities exhibition hall was newly constructed, filled with admiring visitors.
As soon as he walked into the hall, Marcus detected a faint, unusual energy permeating the space.
"Seems I came to the right place, but I can't determine which exhibit is emitting this energy."
He could sense the energy throughout the hall, but it was too diffuse to pinpoint its source. He would need to examine each artifact individually.
Approaching the displays, Marcus carefully observed each item, trying to identify the energy's origin.
