Chapter 5: The Late System

"Hiss~ My back hurts from sleeping on the floor," Norton groaned as he woke up and stretched. He glanced around and noticed Gwen was gone. Shortly after, she entered the laboratory with a tray holding nine small sandwiches. 

"You're awake," Gwen said cheerfully. "I borrowed the company's kitchen to make breakfast. Come and have a taste." She placed the plate on the table and handed one to Norton, who accepted it gratefully. Eating the sandwich, he relished the moment—a beautiful lady and a delicious breakfast seemed like all he needed.

"Where's Peter?" he inquired.

"Peter and Betty went on a date," Gwen replied, pointing to a note Peter had left on the table. Remembering something, she clapped her hands and exclaimed, "I almost forgot, our battle uniforms are ready. I'll get them." Gwen hurriedly stuffed another sandwich into her mouth and dashed out, returning soon with three brightly colored tights in her arms.

These battle suits were crafted with the advanced technology of Osborn Industries. Gwen, a graduate student in a university partnership with Osborn, had access to these privileges. Peter, Norton, and Harry Osborn—Norman Osborn's son—were good friends. Norman Osborn admired Peter's abilities, granting them unhindered access to Osborn's high-tech facilities and materials.

"Wow, that's great!" Norton exclaimed, thrilled at the prospect of teaming up with the future Spider-Man and Spider-Gwen. As he picked up his own Spider battle suit, an unexpected voice resonated in his mind.

"Detected the origin and birth of Spider-Man. Congratulations to the host for becoming a member of Spider-Man. Reward: Kamen Rider Kabuto belt, Kabuto insect instrument. Note: The belt is used to store the system space; it can be summoned anytime to transform. This system is a hero system, and I am very happy to serve the host."

"Issuing a hero mission: Defeat a supervillain alone, and the reward will be random!"

Stunned, Norton momentarily forgot the sandwich in his mouth as he stood with wide eyes, now full of questions. The system had truly awakened at this exact moment. Gwen, noticing his expression, thought he disliked the Spider battlesuit and quickly offered, "If you don't like it, you can change it." Only then did Norton snap back to reality.

Hearing Gwen's words was a little funny. The silly girl thought he didn't like the battle suit she had designed. Norton shook his head and said with a smile, "I like it very much. How can I not like the handsome battle uniform designed by the beautiful lady?" When Gwen heard this, she blushed and muttered in a low voice, "Forget it, you can talk."

Looking at Gwen's red face, Norton suddenly became playful. With a direct thought, there was a wave of ripples in the air, and a red mecha insect flew out of it; that was the Kabuto insect instrument. In its mind, Norton was its maker and father. The Kabuto insect instrument flew directly in front of Gwen's eyes, which startled her.

"Ah!!" Gwen bumped into Norton's arms in a panic. Norton felt the softness in his arms and thought that although this was a bit inappropriate, it would be fine to hug his future wife. "What is this?" Gwen asked calmly, looking at the Kabuto insect instrument that settled on Norton's shoulder.

Norton improvised a reason: "This is a mechanical insect pet made by a research friend of mine. It was a failure, so he gave it to me." The Kabuto insect heard Norton say that it was a failure. Although it knew he was lying, it still acted as if angry and pushed Norton's neck with its horn.

"Oh! Does it have self-awareness?" Seeing the human side of the Kabuto insect, Gwen couldn't help but want to touch it. Unfortunately, it flew away, avoiding her. Clearly, it didn't want to be touched by others. "It does have self-awareness, but it is a little shy."

Gwen nodded half-comprehendingly, then realized she was still in Norton's arms. She gently pushed Norton away, turning her head shyly, sometimes aggressive, sometimes shy, making Norton feel Gwen's cuteness. The Kabuto insect saw that there was nothing more for it to do, so it returned to the space ripples obediently.

Just then, a voice sounded. "Peter! Norton!" Harry came in through the door of the laboratory, walking in with a smile on his face, only to see Norton and Gwen in an ambiguous atmosphere. Then he smiled a little jokingly and asked, "Did I come at the wrong time?"

Norton rolled his eyes fiercely. Harry is just like George now; he likes to appear at strange times.
