Chapter 18: Karix returns to the lodge.
Aurëalis, daughter of Keltherion — one of the most influential beings across all dimensions — and princess of Lumina, the most powerful and influential kingdom in the universe, was showing concern... for me? I, someone who only wanted to rest and avoid trouble, seemed to be attracting exactly the opposite. However, the strangest thing wasn't that; it was the fact that I was gradually allowing her to pierce through a bubble of protection I had created around myself. This bubble prevented anyone — even my parents — from disturbing my peace or sparking my interest in anything or anyone. But she... Why could she do that? Why was I becoming less and less bothered by her presence? In fact, why was I increasingly enjoying having her around?
Despite these questions and the feelings I preferred to suppress, I simply closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and tried to sleep since that was the only thing that helped me relax and forget about all these headaches.
- "Tsk... Look, I know I won't be able to lie to you. So yes... it was me who carried you to your room, and yes... I'm the one in your father's crosshairs" I confessed, blushing deeply from the way she had committed herself to protecting me.
- "But you don't need to worry about me... Sigh... I caused this. If anything is to happen, I'll have to deal with the consequences... on my own. I won't drag you into this mess" I added, lying down and closing my eyes, still red-faced from what had happened earlier.
At that moment, I felt Aurëalis clutch my tail even tighter, as if she were very happy, emotional, or angry. On the other hand, afraid to discover the answer, I kept my eyes shut until she spoke again:
- "Tsk... Do you think... I don't need to worry about you?" she muttered, visibly irritated.
- "Gulp... D-did you say something?" I asked, feeling a shiver run down my spine and the furious gaze of Aurëalis, even while still keeping my eyes closed.
Her hands transformed into their draconic forms, and just like before, but this time deliberately, she squeezed an extremely sensitive part of my tail, making me jump in shock.
- "AAAAAAGH! A-AURËALIS! M-MY TAIL!" I screamed, panicking, as she continued to squeeze it harder.
- "You... I WILL SURELY WORRY ABOUT YOU! And saying it's your fault? IT ISN'T JUST YOURS! IT'S MINE TOO, UNDERSTAND?" she shouted, looking straight into my eyes with a frightening expression.
- "AGH! I didn't say anything to make you this mad at me! Why are you like this?!... OUCH!" I asked, terrified, as she effortlessly overwhelmed me, pressing my tail even harder.
- "HUMPF! Because I WILL worry about you, and I WON'T leave you alone, understand? I know that's what you want, but IT WON'T HAPPEN!"
- "...Understood?" she asked, squeezing my tail again.
- "OUCH... Y-YES! UNDERSTOOD!" I replied, desperate.
- "Please, let go of my tail, Aurëalis... AGH!" I pleaded, with my eyes wide and watery.
- "Tsk... Promise me you won't try to distance yourself from me anymore. And that you won't try to isolate yourself like before" she demanded.
- "I-I...' I hesitated, uncertain.
- "Promise" she insisted, with a gaze that sent shivers down my spine.
- "I promise... I swear... I promise!" I finally responded, unable to bear it any longer.
She looked into my eyes for a moment, as if granting me a measure of trust, and gradually loosened her grip on my tail, though she didn't release it entirely. Then, her expression changed—from terrifying to her usual angelic look, blushing and with shining eyes, while she continued to hug my tail.
I, who no longer felt my tail being crushed but still couldn't reclaim it, lay back down, exhausted from it all, trying to make sense of what had just happened. After a few minutes, I tried to sleep to forget about it, but it was impossible to do so with my mind overwhelmed by confusing emotions.
After some time, realizing that Aurëalis wouldn't let go of my tail no matter what I did —and afraid to ask her to release it — I eventually relaxed and fell asleep. My rest was peaceful for a while, despite her still holding onto my tail, which left me worried about the possibility of her squeezing it again. Thankfully, that didn't happen.
At some point, however, while I slept, I felt something akin to a kiss on my forehead. When I woke up, still groggy, I noticed that night was approaching and that Aurëalis was no longer there. This, of course, left me extremely curious and confused.
- "Yaaawnnn... What was that sound?" I wondered, waking up and rubbing my eyes with my paws.
- "That sound... It felt like someone kissed me... on my forehead?" I touched my forehead with my paw, puzzled.
After a few minutes, I realized that my tail was also free.
- "My tail... is free?" I thought, still not noticing Aurëalis's absence.
- "Wait a second... Aurëalis!" I remembered, as if a lightbulb had gone off in my mind.
- "Where is she?" I looked around.
Slowly, the pieces began to fall into place.
- "Wait... That kiss... Could it have been... her?" My hand went back to my forehead as I blushed more and more, imagining that scene.
- "Tsk... And it's getting dark. What happened? Did she decide to leave early to avoid a repeat of what happened yesterday?" I asked myself.
- "That was probably it. If anything more serious had happened, I would've felt it." I concluded that this was the most plausible explanation.
Then, I looked at the horizon, where the sun was beginning to set, and sighed.
- "Sigh... Damn. What a strange day this has been," I thought, contemplating the sunset.
- "What do you want from me, huh, universe?" I questioned the sky with a hint of bitterness.
- "I just want peace, quiet... but that's not what you've planned for me, is it?"
I stayed there for a few more minutes until fatigue began to take over again.
- "Yaaawwnn... Looks like it's time to head back to the dorms, huh?" I thought, trying to suppress the confusing thoughts and feelings.
With that, I gave a push with my wings and began to fly back to the school. The whole way, I couldn't stop thinking about everything that had happened so far, no matter how hard I tried. Unlike all the other times when I just needed to sleep or think about how nice a good night's sleep would be, now, not even that helped. A sea of strange feelings was invading my mind, which now could no longer rest, much to my annoyance.
...Sounds of wings flapping...
- "…Damn… these thoughts… they won't quiet down… argh…" I muttered while flying back to school.
When I arrived at my dorm, I couldn't wait to take a shower, lie down, and forget everything that had happened. However, as I approached the door, I noticed that the lights were on, which meant someone was inside since I would never leave them on. When I tried to open the door, it was already unlocked, confirming my suspicion. As soon as I entered, I saw Karix, who had returned from the infirmary, where he had stayed for a while.
- "…Finally… back to my dorm, huh?" I thought, happy that I could now rest in peace and forget about those strange thoughts.
- "…Huh? The dorm lights… are on?" I wondered.
- "…Hmm… is someone in there? But who?" I questioned myself.
I tried opening the door, and it opened without needing to unlock it.
- "…Ha… I knew someone was here…" I murmured, preparing myself in case someone with bad intentions was inside.
- "Hey, Kyrion! Everything alright?" said Karix, sitting on the couch.
- "Karix? So it's you?" I asked, closing and locking the door, feeling calmer.
- "Yep… hahaha. Guess you weren't expecting to see me here, huh?" he replied, laughing as he noticed my defensive stance.
- "Sigh… True, haha," I answered, slightly embarrassed.
- "But anyway, how are you? Are you okay?" I asked, noticing the bandages and bruises on his body.
- "Well… besides the fatigue and the classes I missed, I'm doing fine!" he said with a smile.
- "Glad to have you back, bro…" I said, struggling to keep my eyes open.
- "Now, excuse me for the short reunion, but if you don't mind, I need to sleep, or I might pass out right here. We'll talk more tomorrow, alright?" I said.
Just as I was about to reach the door to my room, he called out to me.
- "Kyrion, wait!"
- "Sigh… What now?" I muttered, turning around slowly.
Karix got up, walked toward me, and bowed deeply.
- "Kyrion, I heard about what you did to Lunira and her group. Thank you so much, bro!"
- "It's fine, really. I only did it to avoid more trouble for myself," I replied.
- "Even so, I'm very grateful. Thanks to you, they stopped coming after me," Karix said.
- "Alright, fine. You're welcome, then," I answered, trying to end the conversation.
As I tried to turn around again, he called out once more.
- "One more thing!" he said suddenly.
- "Sigh… What is it now?" I asked with a forced smile.
- "Tomorrow, Cédric, Theron, and I are having dinner in the VIP area to celebrate my recovery. We'd like you to join us."
- "VIP area?" I asked.
- "Yeah, it's where the school serves the best meals. Only the most prestigious students have access," Karix explained proudly.
- "I see… but I…" I tried to decline, but he interrupted me.
- "You're going to say you'll be too tired, aren't you?"
- "Haha… pretty much," I said, laughing awkwardly.
- "…But… I really appreciate the invite, though I don't think I'll be able to make it," I added.
- "Really? Sigh… we went to great lengths and got some things we thought you'd like," he said, disappointed.
- "We actually did a lot of research about your species and found out that Void Dragons really like fruits from the Void Tree. It was so hard to find them… Lord Aertharion himself helped us acquire them when we reached out to him. Sigh… but since you won't be coming, I guess we'll just eat them ourselves," he said sadly.
Unlike other Void Dragons, I didn't have a great need for food and could go a long time without eating since most of my spiritual and vital energy came from the time I spent resting. During that time, my energy would sustain itself, if not quadruple, which was surreal. At the same time, no one had a concrete answer as to why this happened.
Still, even though I didn't need to eat to boost my spiritual and vital energy, I couldn't resist the fruits from the Void Tree. They were the most delicious and succulent fruits I had ever tasted, and just knowing there would be some at the dinner was enough to make me quickly change my mind.
- "…Did you say… fruits from the Void Tree?" I asked, now fully awake and salivating.
