Villain With A Side Quest

Chapter 27: Runic Inscriptions II

The instructor's weathered hands traced an intricate pattern in the air, leaving behind a trail of shimmering light that coalesced into a complex runic array. The symbols hung there, rotating slowly, each line and curve perfectly balanced.

"Dimensional storage," he announced, his deep voice resonating through the classroom. "One of the most practical applications of runic magic, yet also one of the most frequently misunderstood."

A ripple of interest moved through the students. Even the nobles, who typically affected boredom during theoretical discussions, sat up straighter. Dimensional storage items were status symbols among the wealthy, with the best ones costing small fortunes.

"I can see by your expressions that most of you already possess such items," the instructor continued, his knowing gaze sweeping across the room. "Rings, pendants, pouches – all crafted by master runesmiths to create pocket spaces where you can store your belongings."

He gestured, and the floating runic array expanded, revealing layers of interconnected symbols. "But how many of you understand how they actually work?"

Kieran studied the array intently. Unlike the simple elemental runes they'd been practicing, this was a masterwork of complexity. Each line seemed to feed into the next, creating a self-sustaining loop of magical energy.

*Interesting,* the entity murmured in his mind. *The old ones used similar patterns for their soul traps.*

"Dimensional storage," the instructor continued, "operates on three fundamental principles. First: Space Folding." He highlighted a section of the array with a gesture. "These runes compress physical space into a pocket dimension, creating a void that exists adjacent to our reality."

The highlighted section pulsed, and Kieran could see how the runes worked together to bend the fabric of space itself. It reminded him of the way shadows bent around corners, always finding paths where none seemed to exist.

"Second: Boundary Definition." Another section lit up. "These runes establish the parameters of the pocket space – its size, stability, and accessibility. Without proper boundaries, the space would collapse, taking everything inside with it."

A few students shifted uncomfortably at that thought. Kieran noticed Ronan making careful notes, his usual smirk replaced by intense concentration.

"And finally: Anchoring." The last section illuminated. "These runes tether the pocket space to a physical object in our reality, allowing controlled access through that specific point."

The instructor waved his hand, and the array dissolved into sparks. "Next class, you will attempt to create your own dimensional storage items. Nothing large – a simple space the size of a small box will suffice. But before we proceed to that, you must understand the dangers."

His expression grew grave. "Dimensional magic is not to be trifled with. A mistake in basic runic work might result in a failed spell or a minor magical discharge. But errors in dimensional runes can have... severe consequences."

"What kind of consequences, sir?" Victoria asked from her seat near the front.

The instructor's eyes darkened. "Spatial collapse. Dimensional bleeding. In the worst cases, complete atomic dissolution of anything caught in the failing array." He paused. "There's a reason why only master-class mages are permitted to work with the more advanced dimensional runes."

Kieran's mind was already racing with possibilities. If simple storage runes could create pocket dimensions, what else might be possible? Teleportation, spatial manipulation, perhaps even...

*Careful,* the entity warned. *Your ambition shows in your eyes.*

"The applications of dimensional magic extend far beyond mere storage," the instructor continued. "Teleportation circles, spatial barriers, even the creation of permanent dimensional spaces – all operate on similar principles. But such magic is restricted to master-class mages for good reason."

He began sketching another array in the air, this one even more complex than the last. "Consider the runic sequence for teleportation. While it shares basic elements with storage runes, the complexity increases exponentially. You must account for spatial coordinates, compensate for planetary rotation, maintain structural integrity during transit..."

The array grew more intricate with each addition, layers upon layers of symbols weaving together into a tapestry of pure magical theory. Kieran's fingers itched to copy it down, but he knew better. Such knowledge was forbidden to students for a reason.

"But sir," one of the noble students interrupted, "my family's estate has permanent teleportation circles. They don't seem that complicated."

The instructor's laugh was dry and without humor. "What you see is merely the activation array – the visible portion of a much larger system. Beneath those circles lie hundreds of support runes, maintenance arrays, and stabilization matrices. One missing line, one poorly carved symbol, and the entire system could tear a hole in reality itself."

He turned back to the class, his robes swirling with the movement. "Which brings us to an important point. Many of you come from noble families. Many of you possess dimensional storage items. But how many of you have actually examined them? Really looked at how they work?"

Silence fell over the classroom. Kieran watched as several students unconsciously touched their rings or pendants, as if suddenly aware of the complex magic they carried so casually.

"For next class," the instructor said, "I want you to study your own dimensional storage items. Observe the runic patterns. Try to identify the three principles we discussed. And most importantly – think about what you don't understand. Recognizing the limits of your knowledge is the first step toward expanding it."

He waved his hand, and a stack of parchments floated from his desk, distributing themselves to each student. "These contain the basic arrays we'll be using. Study them carefully. Practice drawing them – but do not, under any circumstances, attempt to carve or activate them before class."

Kieran examined the parchment before him. The arrays were simpler than what the instructor had demonstrated, but still far more complex than the elementary runes they'd practiced earlier. Each line had to be perfect, each curve precisely measured.

*You see it, don't you?* the entity whispered. *The pattern within the pattern?*

Kieran did see it. The way the runes flowed together, creating channels for magical energy to flow. It wasn't so different from the way he manipulated soul echoes – finding the paths of least resistance, directing power through existing channels rather than forcing new ones.

"One final note," the instructor said as the class prepared to leave. "While dimensional storage is one of the simpler applications of spatial magic, it is still dangerous. Remember – these runes don't just store your items. They tear holes in reality itself, creating pockets of space where space should not exist. Treat them with the respect they deserve."

As students began gathering their things, Kieran remained seated, studying the arrays on his parchment. The entity's earlier comment about soul traps nagged at his thoughts. If these runes could create spaces to store physical objects, could they be modified to store other things? Energy? Magic itself? Or perhaps...

*Ambitious little snake,* the entity chuckled. *But remember – even the old ones feared to meddle too deeply with the fabric of reality.*

Kieran carefully rolled up the parchment, his mind already plotting how to acquire more advanced texts on dimensional magic. The instructor was right – this magic was dangerous. But then again, so was he.

As he stood to leave, he caught Ronan watching him with an unreadable expression. For a moment, their eyes met, and Kieran saw something flicker in the other student's gaze – recognition, perhaps? Or was it warning?

The moment passed, and Ronan turned away, but Kieran's instincts were already on alert. Something about the way Ronan had watched him during the lesson, the way he'd taken such careful notes about dimensional magic...

*Watch that one,* the entity advised. *He knows more than he should.*

Kieran nodded slightly, filing away yet another piece of the puzzle that was Ronan. The mystery of the runes, the whisperstone conversations, and now this apparent expertise in dimensional magic – it all pointed to something bigger, something hidden beneath the surface of the Academy's perfectly ordered world.

But for now, he had work to do. The arrays on his parchment weren't going to memorize themselves, and he had a feeling that mastering dimensional storage would be crucial in the days to come.

After all, having a few extra pocket dimensions might prove useful when everything inevitably went to hell.
