Chapter 14 - The Phone Call
Chapter 14: The Phone Call
Just then, Ding Dian’s phone suddenly rang.
She hurriedly got out of bed, rushed to the living room, and picked up the call.
Seeing Lin Jia’s name on the screen, her heart skipped a beat. She quickly took a deep breath, steadied herself, and answered.
“Hello, Jia-jie? What’s up?”
“Why didn’t you come to work today?” Lin Jia’s concerned voice came through. “I went to the café to find you, and your coworkers said you never showed up. You didn’t call in sick, and you weren’t answering your phone. Did something happen?”
Ding Dian felt warmth in her heart at Lin Jia’s concern. But after what had just happened, she could never tell the truth.
She had no choice but to lie. “Oh, it’s nothing. I think I ate something bad yesterday and got food poisoning. I didn’t feel well, so I stayed home. I totally forgot to ask for leave.”
While she spoke on the phone, Yang Yu smirked and walked over, wrapping his arms around her from behind.
Ding Dian continued talking to Lin Jia, but her eyes pleaded with Yang Yu to stop.
Seeing her desperate expression only made Yang Yu even more excited.
Soon, Ding Dian’s breathing grew uneven. A soft, barely audible sound escaped her lips—melodious, as if she were suppressing something.
On the other end of the line, Lin Jia frowned. “Ding Dian, what’s wrong? Your voice sounds a little weird.”
Ding Dian bit her lip, forcing herself to stay calm. “Jia-jie, my stomach is acting up again. I need to run to the bathroom—ahh!”
Before Lin Jia could say another word, Ding Dian hurriedly hung up.
Sitting in the café, Lin Jia stared at her phone, stunned. She thought she heard Ding Dian yelp before the call ended.
After a moment, she shook her head and chuckled. “What is that girl up to?”
Ding Dian, now free from the call, turned and clung to Yang Yu. At that moment, she pushed aside all the chaos in her mind. There was only—
—
Around 7 p.m., Yang Yu lit a cigarette, taking a deep drag.
This side quest—was it complete?
Ding Dian’s fate—had it changed?
At the same time, he felt a hint of concern.
Sure, he handled Ding Dian well today. He had complete control. But if this continued, his body might not keep up.
After all, there was an old saying: The ox tires before the field wears out.
A strong body was essential.
After completing this world’s mission, he needed to ask the system if there were any stamina-enhancing skills or items. Otherwise, even an iron will would be worn down eventually.
As he smoked and let his mind wander, Ding Dian walked over.
Recalling her actions that afternoon, her face burned with embarrassment. She was supposed to hate him, yet somehow, she had gone along with everything.
Even her feelings seemed to have shifted.
She didn’t hate him as much anymore.
Cursing herself for being shameless, she buried her face, avoiding his gaze.
What she didn’t realize was that in all her internal struggle, she hadn’t thought about Yu Fei even once.
Yang Yu chuckled at her ostrich-like behavior.
Sigh! If the system didn’t force me to be the villain, I wouldn’t have used such methods on such a cute girl.
He reached out and patted her shoulder. “What, getting shy now? But this afternoon—”
“Ugh, shut up!”
Before he could finish, Ding Dian cut him off, playfully hitting him with her small fists.
Her reaction felt more like… pouting.
A moment later, she hesitantly lifted her head and met Yang Yu’s gaze.
Her big, beautiful eyes blinked.
Then, as if realizing something, she quickly looked away and buried her face again.
Yang Yu was stunned.
What was that look supposed to mean?
Was she…
Or was Yu Fei just lacking in some departments?
His mind spun with all kinds of possibilities.
Regardless of the reason, this unexpected outcome pleased him.
No need to overthink it.
He pulled the blushing Ding Dian into his arms and declared, “From now on, you’re my woman. Dump that Yu Fei. I don’t want my woman tangled up with another man.”
Silence.
He waited, but Ding Dian didn’t respond.
He raised a brow. “What’s wrong? You don’t want to?”
“N-no… I mean… I don’t… mind.”
