Chapter 102: She's Dead
As I drained Gino's hitman of his blood, my mind expanded. I gained skills I never had before and my mind began flashing through memories that weren't my own.
[Guns skill upgraded to Good]
[Would you like to access the target's memories]
'Yes.'
I replied yes despite the fact that I kind of already was accessing his memories. It seems like there wasn't a clear delineation between what the system could do that I couldn't and I could do and the system couldn't. The line was blurred and overlapped in areas.
I could imagine that would be very frustrating to someone who liked the world to have clear cut rules. Seeing as I wasn't one of those people, I couldn't care less if my abilities and the system's overlapped, but you might.
It was what it was. To get back to the point, I flashed through the memories of the hitman. It revealed Gino ordering the hit, Gino's headquarters, the layout of the place, the password for easy entry, the works.
It gave me everything I needed to take Gino down. That wasn't my first priority but it was towards the top. My first priority was to check on Mira. I threw the hitman's body to the floor.
I got down next to the medic who was giving me a weird look. Then I realized I probably had blood all over my face, neck, and body. And the fact that she probably saw me sucking down that dude's blood.
Ignoring the medic's look of genuine concern, I said, "How is she?"
The medic said, "Her? Sh-she's dead. He shot her through the heart multiple times. She bled out in seconds. There was nothing I could do, so please don't kill me."
"Why would I kill you? I killed the other guy because he shot her. You did nothing wrong. I may be a blood drinking freak, but I'm not a bad guy. I don't kill people for no reason," I said.
"O-ok. Whatever you say. I have to do something," she said and legitimately sprinted away from me. Figures. I'd probably do the same in her shoes.
I kneeled over Mira. Her eyes were still open staring at nothing. I closed them for her. I could still save her, but cops or security could show up at any second and she could get caught in the crossfire and die all over again.
<Main Objective Completed: Give Mira a good last day>
Everything froze and the portal opened up next to me.
<Calculating rewards>
"No. That's not fair! You have to give me more time!" I said.
The portal didn't respond. This wasn't fair! This was bullshit! @$$ couldn't do this to me! Make me bond with this girl with an expiration date and then take her away as soon as one good thing happens in her life?
I pulled out the cure all medicine and tried to jab it into Mira's arm, but the frozen nature of the game made it so the needle wouldn't penetrate her skin. Everything was frozen. It was over. Time for me to give up and leave. This was bullshit!
It wasn't fair. I wouldn't allow it. I was going to stop this madness if it took every ounce of strength I had. I walked up to the portal and spread my hands wide. I gripped the outer left and right side of the portal and pulled them together with all my strength.
I empowered my body with as much Vi as I could muster. I could feel myself burning through life essence like crazy. Numbers counted down in my head.
[You have burned 200,000 life essence. Do you wish to continue?]
'Fucking yes I do!'
[You have burned through 500,000 life essence. Do you wish to continue?] Experience tales at empire
'Yes! Stop asking me that question!'
[Nullifying further notifications]
'Thank you.'
Slowly, the portal began to close. I pulled and I pushed and I pulled and I pushed until the portal was forced shut, and disappeared.
<Level ending delayed. New Main Objective>
<Difficulty Increased to Dread>
<Main Objective: Save Mira's life and let her visit her father one last time>
<Secondary Objective: Stop Gino Gambino from targeting Mira or the Calabrese family ever again>
That I could do. The surroundings returned to color and life. I went to pick Mira up to take her away, but I hated to ruin her victory. So I looked around for someone holding a medallion or trophy or a check. Then I noticed him. He was standing twenty feet away just frozen stiff, staring at me.
He was clearly terrified but in his right hand he was holding an envelope and in his left a medallion. I calmly got up, walked over to him and said, "I'll take those. I'll give them to her when she wakes up." I yanked the items out of his hands and walked back over to Mira.
I put the medallion around her neck and stuffed the envelope in her pocket.
"Don't move!" A voice behind me yelled.
Ah shit. Someone had finally arrived on the scene, probably with a gun. Instead of turning around, I picked up Mira's body, and enhanced my legs with as much Vi as I could pump into them.
Then I leaped into the air, trying to get as far away from the authorities as I could. I soared into the air and landed 200 feet away, next to a hot dog stand. A guy was in the process of putting mustard on his hot dog.
When he saw me land out of nowhere, his jaw went slack, and he slowly and continuously squirted mustard onto his hot dog until it overflowed the hot dog and began running down his arm.
"You think you got enough mustard there buddy?" I said, before making a smaller leap and jumping 50 feet away and landing next to Ralph's Blade Emporium.
Ralph jumped for a second and then recognized me. "Kid, you scared the bejeezus out of me! What's going on?"
"You need to hide me!" I said. "I'll pay you more money or whatever you want, but I need a safe place to hide so I can take care of my friend." I indicated Mira in my arms. "People think I killed a guy and they're after me."
"Well, did you kill a guy?" Ralph said.
"Yes, but for good reason! Now are you gonna hide me or not?" I said.
"Ok, ok! I'll fucking hide you! Just get behind the counter. I'll open the door to the back," he said. He pulled out a set of keys and began fiddling with them while walking towards the display wall.
I stepped behind the counter just as Ralph opened a door that wasn't easily visible from in front of the counter. He let me in first and then came in himself and closed the door and locked it.
He looked at Mira and said, "Your friend looks dead."
"She is, but I have a thing that can bring her back to life," I said.
"What, like a defibrillator?" He said.
"Something like that," I said. I pulled out the cure all syringe.
I laid Mira down on the ground in the cramped backroom and just breathed for a second. Then, with determination, I stabbed her in the arm with the syringe and injected it.
Nothing happened at first, but then color started coming back into her face and she sat bolt upright and gasped a huge breath.
"Dylan! What happened? The last thing I remember is some guy shooting me in the chest and then falling down on the ground. And that's it. Now I'm in somebody's shitty closet," she said looking around.
"Hey! Don't insult my shitty closet, you dead person!" Ralph said.
"What does he mean, dead person?" Mira looked at me.
"Well, I wasn't going to tell you this, because I didn't want to upset you, but I guess I kind of have to now," I said, glaring at Ralph. "You died. The guy shot you through the heart a million times. You bled out in seconds. Or at least that's what the medic told me, before she ran away."
"I died? Then how am I alive?" She said, a look of concern on her face.
"I used a very rare medicine to bring you back to life. It was one time use and I don't have anymore, so please try not to die again anytime soon," I said.
"Holy shit!" Mira said. She kind of stared off into space for a minute, and then she looked at me with tears forming in her eyes and said, "You saved my life? Again?"
She grabbed me by the collar and pulled my face against hers. Our foreheads were kind of just pressed together and she mashed her face against mine as she wept.
After a minute, without opening her eyes, she tentatively kissed me on the mouth. Just a quick smooch. Nothing more. Then, still holding my collar, she pushed my face away and looked at me to gauge my reaction.
I don't know what I did with my face at that moment, but I must have done the right thing, because she pulled my face back in and kissed me hard this time. And she kissed me long.
Then she kind of fell backwards and dragged me down with her while still kissing me. We ended up kind of just making out on the floor while a man in his fifties or sixties stared at us with a really confused look on his face.
