Chapter 8: Chapter 08 - Lena

A new notification on Lucas's phone made him freeze for a moment. He read the message carefully.

[ Message Notification ]

From: Dad

"Lucas, I wanted to let you know that Lena got accepted to Brightville University. She's starting classes next month. We hope you can help her out while she gets used to life in the big city. And please, don't cause any trouble, okay?"

Lucas stared at the message, mouth slightly agape.

"Lena… in Brightville? College?" he muttered, half in disbelief.

He reread the message to make sure his eyes weren't deceiving him. But there it was. His stepsister Lena was moving to the city he now called home, and their parents wanted him to help her.

His thoughts drifted back to the past.

Back then, Lucas had been the confident, maybe even slightly annoying, older brother. When they were kids, he'd once made Lena call him "onii-chan" because he thought it was funny, thanks to the anime he'd been obsessed with. Lena, innocent as she was back then, went along with it, blushing furiously the whole time.

But things changed when they hit their teenage years. Lena, who used to be so obedient, began showing her tsundere side. She started scolding Lucas and arguing with him, especially when he made impulsive decisions—like leaving home to live in Brightville without any clear plan.

Now, those memories felt distant, but they still stung. Lucas cringed every time he thought about how stupid and selfish he had been. He had chosen the allure of Brightville over his family, only to end up working random jobs just to survive.

"Why does she have to come here?" Lucas groaned, rubbing his temples. He could already picture the awkward interactions with Lena after years of strained sibling dynamics.

As Lucas sat there lost in thought, the system's voice chimed in, as usual, at the most inconvenient time.

Lucas read the notification with growing frustration.

"This system just can't mind its own business!" he grumbled, though deep down, he couldn't deny that helping Lena might actually be the right thing to do.

Taking a deep breath, Lucas typed a reply to his dad.

Lucas: "Alright, I'll help her. Let me know when she's arriving in Brightville."

Before his phone could go silent again, another message popped up—this time from Lena.

Lena: "I heard you're picking me up. I'm arriving on Monday, so don't be late. I hate waiting."

Lucas sighed, already imagining Lena's signature annoyed expression.

He stayed on the couch, staring at the message from his dad. A bitter truth settled in his mind: Lena, now 18, was coming to Brightville for college.

"I left Greenville because it felt like a dead-end, and now she's coming here? The city I thought had everything?" Lucas muttered, running a hand over his face.

Four years ago, Lucas had been 18 himself, fresh out of high school. Greenville, the small town he grew up in, had an unspoken tradition: graduate high school, get a job, live a quiet, predictable life. Most people never left town, following a cycle Lucas saw as an invisible prison.

When his parents tried to convince him to go to college, Lucas had outright refused.

"College isn't important, Mom. I can be successful without it. I'm going to Brightville. That's where the opportunities are," he'd declared confidently, swept up in dreams of the big city he'd seen online and on TV.

But reality had been far less glamorous. Brightville was tough. The "opportunities" he had envisioned turned into a string of odd jobs that barely paid the bills. Meanwhile, his old classmates back in Greenville, leading the dull lives he'd once scorned, were now comfortably settled with stable jobs and small families.

"Was I too harsh on their way of life?" Lucas wondered, massaging his temples.

His thoughts wandered back further. He remembered how eager he'd been to set a good example for Lena back then. And the cringe-worthy, mortifying memory of making her call him "onii-chan" haunted him like a ghost from his embarrassing past.

Now Lena was coming to Brightville, to the city that had taught Lucas some harsh lessons about real life.

The system's screen abruptly appeared, cutting through his reverie.

Lucas glared at the screen.

"Could you stop judging me for five minutes?"

---

[ System Response ]

Of course not. I'm here to ensure your continuous growth.

---

Lucas let out a long sigh. There was no point arguing with the system. Instead, he began to think about what he needed to do next.

"Maybe this is my chance to make things right," he muttered. "I've failed at being a good role model for Lena. But maybe… I can start now."

With that thought, Lucas picked up his phone and replied to his dad.

Lucas: "I'll pick up Lena. Send me the details later."

He then opened Lena's message, reluctantly typing a response.

Lucas: "I won't be late. Don't worry."

A reply came almost instantly.

Lena: "You always say that, but your actions never match. Let's hope this time is different."

Lucas exhaled deeply, closing his eyes. He knew this wasn't going to be easy. But for the first time in a long while, he felt like facing Lena might be the first step toward fixing himself.
