Chapter 12: Chapter 12 - Stepsister

Lucas woke up a few hours after falling asleep on the sofa, having gone back to sleep after shopping earlier. The noise from the kitchen caught his attention. He walked toward the kitchen out of curiosity. When he arrived, he found Lena holding a broom in one hand and a cleaning cloth in the other. The kitchen table, which was usually messy, was now spotless, and the floor that used to be covered with breadcrumbs was gleaming.

"You're… cleaning?" Lucas asked, confused but also impressed.

Lena turned with a blank expression. Her loosely tied hair moved slightly. "Obviously. If I have to stay here, I can't just sit still while this apartment looks like a rat's nest."

Lucas leaned against the doorframe, watching his sister as she diligently cleaned every corner of the room. "I've got to say, Lena, you're really talented. You're definitely going to make an amazing wife someday."

Lena stopped what she was doing, then turned to Lucas with a skeptical look. "For a guy with rainbow hair, that's a pretty weird thing to say."

Lucas froze. Since yesterday, Lena hadn't mentioned his hair at all. The neon-colored hair was actually the result of a random experiment a few months ago—or at least, that was the excuse he planned to use. He cleared his throat, trying to explain.

"Oh, this hair? Uh… I just…" Lucas said, forcing an awkward smile as he scratched his neck.

Lena continued, this time with a softer tone but still laced with sarcasm. "Relax, bro. I don't care about your sexuality or whatever you're trying to say with that rainbow hair. But still… it's kind of disappointing."

Lucas felt his face heat up. "Lena! This has nothing to do with my sexuality! It was just an experiment, okay? And it failed."

Lena shrugged with a sly smile. "Oh, a failed experiment. That makes sense. Just like your life?"

Lucas stared at Lena with a mix of irritation and embarrassment. "You really know how to make your brother feel great, don't you?" he said, trying to sound lighthearted, but the defensiveness in his voice was evident.

Lena gave a small smile, this time with a lighter tone. "I'm your sister. Roasting you is part of our unspoken contract."

Lucas remained seated on the sofa, trying to ignore the irritation from Lena's jabs. However, his gaze involuntarily drifted back to the kitchen, where Lena was still busy cleaning every corner. Her loosely tied hair actually looked captivating, and the way she moved so deftly showed a level of maturity Lucas had never noticed before. Somehow, the stepsister he had known as a sarcastic teenager now seemed more beautiful and graceful.

Lucas quickly looked away, his face flushing as he realized what he had just thought. What's wrong with me? he muttered internally. He took a deep breath, trying to calm himself down.

"Even though she's my stepsister, she's still my sister. Don't forget that, Lucas!" he told himself firmly.

But before Lucas could completely push away those strange thoughts, a notification from the system suddenly popped up in front of him.

---

[System Notification]

Host, don't think anything weird. Your stepsister isn't going to get stuck and ask for your help, so relax.

Note:

You only need to focus on fixing your own life. Lena is independent enough not to become part of your "failed experiments."

---

Lucas stared at the notification, his face a mix of horror and anger. "Are you serious? I wasn't even thinking that far!" he muttered quietly, afraid that Lena might hear him.

As usual, the system ignored his protests. The notification slowly disappeared, leaving Lucas biting his lip in frustration.

"Are you talking to yourself again, Lucas?" Lena asked without turning around, still busy cleaning the kitchen.

Lucas quickly shook his head, even though Lena couldn't see him. "No, just… thinking hard," he replied, his voice slightly trembling from the nerves.

Lena let out a soft snort, then grabbed a cleaning cloth and started wiping the top of the fridge. "If that's what you call 'thinking hard,' I'm a little worried. With the way you live, you need more help than just thoughts."

Lucas sighed and decided not to respond further. Instead, he lay back on the sofa, trying to distract himself. But every time he closed his eyes, the image of Lena diligently cleaning the apartment kept flashing in his mind.

Even though they weren't blood siblings, Lena had been a part of his life for years. He clearly remembered the first time he met her, when she was just a shy little girl with pigtails and a hesitant smile. Now, Lena had grown into an independent woman, and that shy smile had long been replaced with sharp wit and unwavering composure.

Lucas let out a long sigh, feeling a bit guilty for even letting weird thoughts about his sister cross his mind. He tried to push the awkwardness away by focusing on something else—anything else—but deep down, he knew this wouldn't be the last time Lena left him feeling completely out of his depth.
