Chapter 11: Chapter 11 - Broccoli

The sun was just starting to peek through the blinds when Lucas woke up on his couch. His back ached from the thin cushions, but he forced himself to sit up. His half-closed eyes squinted toward the kitchen, where a series of clinks and clangs echoed through the small apartment.

"What's she up to now?" he mumbled, stretching his stiff arms.

Dragging his feet to the kitchen, Lucas found Lena holding a frying pan with a confused look on her face. On the counter sat an open carton of eggs, a loaf of bread, and... a bottle of ketchup?

"Uh, Lena? What exactly are you making?" Lucas asked, scratching his head.

Lena turned, her expression flat. "I'm trying to make breakfast. But... is this all you've got?" she said, holding up the ketchup bottle like it was an alien artifact.

Lucas chuckled lightly and opened a cupboard. "Well, welcome to Brightville. This isn't Dad's house. I don't stock up much. If it's not enough, we can hit the convenience store later."

Lena gave him a look that screamed disbelief. "So, you live on bread and ketchup? Inspirational, Lucas. Really living the dream."

Lucas shrugged. "It's cheap, and I survive. If you don't like it, maybe you should do the shopping."

Lena sighed, clearly unimpressed. "Fine. I'll cook with what's here for now. But you're going grocery shopping later. I'm not living like this while I'm here."

Lucas stared at the notification with his mouth slightly open. "Shopping with Lena? What even is this? I'm not a babysitter," he muttered.

"Lucas, are you talking to yourself? You're starting to worry me," Lena commented as she flipped a piece of toast in the pan.

Lucas quickly shook his head. "No, just... thinking out loud," he said, swiping the notification away. Deep down, he knew the system wasn't going to let him off the hook easily.

---

After a makeshift breakfast, Lucas and Lena walked to the nearest convenience store down the block. The morning air in Brightville was fresh, though the hum of city traffic was already building up.

"So, what are we getting first?" Lucas asked, trying to sound proactive.

Lena pulled out a small notepad from her pocket. "Everything that'll make life feel less miserable. Vegetables, meat, snacks—you name it. I'm not surviving on toast and ketchup while I'm here."

Lucas glanced at the list and raised an eyebrow. "Snacks? Those aren't essentials."

"They are for me," Lena replied, crossing her arms. "If you're not buying them, I'll just call Dad and tell him about your ultra-budget lifestyle."

Lucas sighed. "Fine. Snacks. But nothing too expensive."

The moment they entered the convenience store, Lena darted off to the produce section, leaving Lucas fumbling for a shopping basket.

---

"Lucas, I want broccoli, but look at this—it's wilted. Let's go to a proper supermarket," Lena said, holding up a slightly floppy stalk of broccoli with a grimace.

"Broccoli is broccoli. It all tastes the same once it's cooked," Lucas argued, tossing it into the basket.

Lena shot him a glare. "This is Brightville, Lucas. We need fresh produce, or your cooking will somehow become even more depressing than your life."

"Hey, leave my life out of this!" Lucas snapped back.

Before the argument could escalate, another notification popped up in front of Lucas.

---

[System Warning] Host, you have only two chances left before failing this task. Choose fresh broccoli or suffer Lena's wrath for the rest of the week.

---

Lucas let out a long sigh. "Fine. We'll get fresh broccoli at the supermarket later. But no adding extra stuff to the list," he said, attempting to compromise.

Lena gave him a smug smile. "Finally, some sense."

---

Back at the Apartment

After a grocery run filled with compromises and minor disputes, they finally returned to Lucas' apartment. He set the shopping bags on the floor and began massaging his shoulder. "I forgot how exhausting shopping can be."

"That's because you never do it," Lena retorted, casually organizing the groceries in the cupboard.

Lucas flopped onto the couch, staring at the ceiling in defeat. "Your first day here already has me feeling ancient."

"That's because you are ancient, Lucas," Lena replied, completely devoid of sympathy.

Host, you managed to keep the peace. Though, to be honest, Lena did most of the heavy lifting.

---

Lucas closed the notification with a sour expression. "This system never takes my side, does it?" he muttered.

"Lucas, are you mumbling to yourself again?" Lena called from the kitchen.

Lucas just shut his eyes, trying to ignore the reality that this was only the beginning of a long, chaotic new chapter in his life.
