Chapter 66: Going to the survivors settlement
"Why do you want to check it out?" Luciel asked.
"Let's see how they are managing their people and learn more about this situation. Nate's brothers' family might also be there, so it's good to check them out.
And if the condition there is good, some of those people who came with us might stay there if they don't want to follow us any longer," Treyton said.
Aside from the people in their team, the others were actually just following them around to have a safer trip.
They weren't really Treyton's subordinates, so those who found somewhere they wanted to stay would of course be allowed to go to where they wanted to go.
So, in the morning, they traveled together with those people on the basketball court who had stayed with them at night.
Treyton also informed the others about the settlement, and some people really wanted to check out the settlement area to see if it was safe and livable. If it was, then they would stop following Treyton and stay there.
The place where Treyton wanted to go was very far, so some people really don't want to venture that far because they already knew that it's dangerous.
After they drove for more than an hour, they finally reached the settlement area they were talking about.
The settlement area they were talking about seemed to be a large, connected area of farms and some houses on it. It was surrounded by walls, so it could be said that it was quite well protected.
The structure is also a bit uphill, so they could see some of what was inside even though there are walls around it.
There was a large poster pasted on the wall in front of them that says, 'Survivors settlement.'.
There were some people going inside and were being checked by some people in front of them.
There were also some guards stationed in front, but Luciel could immediately tell that they weren't even trained properly; they were clearly amateurs who were just assigned guard duty.
So, the people who were leading the settlement clearly weren't soldiers or people that were involved in security.
Some people were lining up to go inside, so Yang and Zam went out to inquire how to get in and get some more information about the place.
Luciel looked around and saw that most of the people who were lining up were just like the people they met at the basketball covered court.
There were a lot of signs that show that their experience in the past few weeks wasn't good.
Well, it was actually normal because it had rained a lot in the past week, so those people that don't have a lot of stocks would surely starve for a few days because they couldn't even go out because of the rain.
Even though they had indeed suffered, Luciel could still see that they had the desire to survive as they went out by themselves to go to this settlement area.
After a while, Yang and Zam finally came back.
"So, how do we get in?" Treyton asked.
"We just need to fill out a form about yourself. Then go to that blue tent, and someone will check if you are injured. If you aren't, then you can get inside quickly," Yang said.
"How do they check?" Treyton asked with a frown.
"Of course, it's to strip naked, and someone would check if the person is injured or not."
"If you don't want to be checked, then you have to stay outside for 2 hours before you can get in," Yang quickly added as soon as he saw Treyton's face darkening.
Luciel could see a lot of people staying on their side on the side of the walls, while only a few opted to go inside quickly. It seemed that a lot of people still weren't comfortable in such things; that's why they still opted to just wait for 2 hours.
Well, he also doesn't want to strip naked and let someone check his body. In his past life he hadn't experienced such requirements to enter human settlements because there were no monsters like zombies that could quickly transform them into one if they were injured.
However, he was accustomed to waiting for at least 24 hours before he could enter human settlements because there were also some monsters that could control the mind and give suggestions. And it would only be noticeable that they were controlled in 20 hours.
"What else did you find out?" Treyton asked again.
"Well, it seemed that the people who were coming really didn't know much about who was leading this survivor's settlement. I asked some guards about it, and they said that a wealthy man took the lead in occupying this area, and a lot of superpower users were following him.
Afterwards, because the area is large, a lot of people also came for refuge, so the survivor's settlement was eventually formed."
"Ok, then we will wait for 2 hours. If someone wants to enter first, you can let them go inside first. They could get more information for us," Treyton said.
"Then, I and Jacob will go first to collect some information. We will wait for all of you at the entrance in 2 hours," Zam said.
"Ok, go and ask the others if they want to go in quickly," Treyton said Zam.
"Then I will go and get the forms that we need to fill up," Yang said.
"Go with Nate. Try to ask them to check their records to see if the people he is looking for are here."
"What do you think of this place? Does it look safe?" Luciel asked Treyton after Yang and Zam went away.
"It certainly doesn't look reliable. The guards are clearly inexperienced; their numbers are also too few. The walls also looked flimsy, so this could only be a temporary settlement.
The zombies are clearly getting stronger, and such walls won't be able to protect them when stronger zombies come. It's a bad move to stay here for a long time," Treyton said.
Luciel also completely agrees with what Treyton was saying. Such a place wasn't a good place to stay in.
It's a bit elevated, which is indeed good when it comes to floods but can't protect them from other things.
The walls they have aren't even thick enough to withstand the blow of a lot of level 2 zombies; they would quickly be destroyed. The zombies could even jump over the wall after using some of their compatriots as stairs.
Even if they have a lot of ability users, if those zombies that were attracted to the numbers of people inside the settlement come in droves, it would be hard for them to guard such a place.
And if what Yang said was true, then it means that there was no experienced leader inside and the power structure wasn't even clear.
The guards couldn't even say who was really taking the lead and just mentioned that the first to arrive in this place was a wealthy man.
It just means that he might be the person who had the highest authority and the most prominent one, but he was clearly not alone. There should be more people with authority in such a small survivor's settlement.
So, the management of the settlement should also be a bit of a mess because of the different people with authority.
With such things mixed together in the survivors' settlement, the settlement will clearly not last for a long time.
So, it's better for the survivors to go to other places than to stay in such an unsecure place.
"Let's still check it. Let's see if the situation might actually be a bit better," Treyton said positively.
After he and Treyton talked for a bit, Yang and Nate finally came back.
Yang was holding some papers while Nate was visibly excited; it seemed that they got good news.
"How is it?"
"I got the forms," Yang said.
"They said that my sister-in-law and nephew are inside," Nate said happily.
"Congrats, Did they tell you where they are living?"
"No, they don't record such information. I'll just look for them all around later," Nate still said with a smile.
He could see that Nate was really happy after receiving such news. He heard that Nate was actually supported by his big brother because their parents died when he was still young. He lived with his big brother's family until he grew up.
Treyton's brother also died in an accident four years ago; that's why he was very worried about his sister-in-law and nephew.
"When we go inside, I'll let the others help you look for them."
"Thank you!"
"By the way, how much did you give?" Luciel asked Yang curiously.
He knew that those people wouldn't actively tell them their records, and he also saw Yang carrying something a while ago.
"Not much; I gave them 5 kilograms of rice as their trouble fee," Yang said.
