Vol. 1 - Ch. 390 - Diversion
Gu ZhaoChuan sat in silence, a deep unease gnawing at his heart.
Even though he had already sent people to deal with the girls around HuMing, something still didn't sit right with him. He had a creeping feeling that HuMing wouldn't be taken down so easily.
That man—his rival for so many years—wasn't someone who could be outplayed that simply.
Zero had assured him this location was completely safe, but that assurance only held if HuMing didn't know about the church.
If HuMing returned to JingDu and noticed the sudden appearance of a church that hadn't been here before, he'd surely grow suspicious. And once he did… would Gu ZhaoChuan's whereabouts remain hidden?
He glanced at the now-sleeping Gu ZhouTing.
It was Shi Zhong who had ordered him to bring the old man here—to neutralize the Gu family's influence. Without the former patriarch, the Gu family would be unable to resist or maneuver effectively.
Click. Click. Click.
Footsteps suddenly echoed through the corridor.
Gu ZhaoChuan's body tensed instantly.
It was already past 3 a.m.—a time when the neighborhood should have been silent. No one should be out this late, let alone heading straight to his door.
He stood, pressing himself against the wall beside the doorframe.
The footsteps stopped—right outside.
Whoever it was… they had come specifically for him. But who?
An image of HuMing flashed through his mind.
Could it be him?
Gu ZhaoChuan froze for a moment—just before the door was kicked open with a thunderous bang!
It was an old wooden door, not particularly sturdy, but even so—it shouldn't have been taken down with a single kick!
That thought barely registered before Gu ZhaoChuan's instincts kicked in. He pulled a dagger from his waist and lunged toward the intruder.
But the attacker had already predicted his move.
With a swift sidestep, the man grabbed Gu ZhaoChuan's wrist and yanked him out through the doorway.
Their eyes met—and in that instant, both saw exactly who they expected.
"HuMing—it really is you!"
"You've been looking for me, haven't you? Well, here I am."
HuMing locked eyes with him. Two years had passed, and all traces of the former youthfulness were gone from Gu ZhaoChuan. Whatever he'd been through, it had hardened him.
HuMing gripped his wrist, only to realize—it wasn't so easy to control him anymore.
He was stronger than expected.
He's undergone Shi Zhong's enhancement too, HuMing thought.
Sometimes, he had to laugh at the absurdity of it all. Everyone he dealt with these days barely qualified as human anymore.
These so-called enhancements all came at steep costs. The power boost was temporary—often leading to irreversible side effects like muscle atrophy or total loss of arm function in the long run.
But people still chose that path—for a taste of strength.
And now, Gu ZhaoChuan had made the same choice.
HuMing threw a punch at his face, and Gu ZhaoChuan let go of his dagger, swinging a fist of his own in return.
Blow after blow, neither backed down.
But the cramped space didn't allow for full movement. Though Gu ZhaoChuan could match HuMing punch for punch, the latter's agility let him slip in extra hits between openings.
Realizing this, Gu ZhaoChuan turned and sprinted toward the rooftop.
HuMing followed without hesitation. He wasn't about to let him get away.
One neighbor peeked out, curious about the commotion—only for HuMing to shove them back in.
"Police business. Stay inside!"
…
Meanwhile, inside the building, Gu ZhouTing had already heard the noise.
But he didn't rush out. He knew HuMing had come to rescue him—and he wouldn't become a liability.
This had gone beyond reconciliation. HuMing and Gu ZhaoChuan—whatever they once were to each other—were now locked in a battle to the death.
He had already tried to talk sense into ZhaoChuan.
But the boy had refused.
Whatever happened from here on, he wouldn't regret his choice.
He was a Gu. He would support HuMing.
He rose slowly to his feet as the sounds of fighting grew distant—moving upward.
Now was the time to leave.
But just as he prepared to move, a figure burst through the door.
His eyes widened in shock.
"YunZhou?! What are you doing here?"
Gu YunZhou was panting hard, clearly having sprinted up from below.
He glanced down the empty hallway, then turned to Gu ZhouTing.
"Grandpa, no time to talk. Cousin lured him away—we have to go, now!"
"Understood."
The old man didn't hesitate. He quickly followed Gu YunZhou down the stairs.
…
Elsewhere, Liang Feng was locked in a heated battle.
But then—an unexpected surprise.
Out of nowhere, a shadowy figure dashed up and swung a heavy club at the assassin's head.
With a dull thud, the man's eyes rolled back as he collapsed onto the ground.
Bathed in moonlight, Liang Feng finally got a good look at his rescuer.
"Xia Chen? What are you doing here?"
"Teacher, this is my home. Where else would I be?" Xia Chen said with a grin. "If someone's trying to break into my home, of course I'm going to give them a proper welcome."
His smile was laced with a chilling edge as he looked down at the unconscious intruder.
Over the years, aside from learning leadership from Liang Feng, Xia Chen had also been training in self-defense.
He knew—only by protecting one's own life could one take action when it truly mattered.
"These guys must be the ones HuMing warned us about—the ones coming after us."
"From now on, keep your family safe, JingDu isn't safe anymore."
Xia Chen nodded, though his mind still lingered on the church.
Ever since HuMing had returned from there, he hadn't said much about what happened. He'd just warned Xia Chen to be vigilant, to watch for intruders.
And now, someone had come.
He glanced at Liang Feng again. So he's here too... Clearly, HuMing had planned for everything.
"Teacher, that church—what kind of people are in there?"
"They're dangerous. That's all you need to know. Don't dig any deeper."
"Alright, got it. But… where's HuMing now? Did he find the one we're looking for?"
As he spoke, Xia Chen's mind flashed back to the scene of his father's car crash.
There were some hatreds that couldn't be washed away. No matter how often he smiled and joked, the nightmares still came.
He dreamed of that moment—again and again.
He wanted to kill the one responsible with his own hands.
"Since he made a move against you, there must be a flaw to exploit. HuMing should be going to see Gu ZhaoChuan now"
