Vol. 1 - Ch. 386 - Original Identity
"Do you think we'll be recognized going in like this? My cousin said they might get suspicious."
"It's fine. Our job is just to buy time," Xia Chen replied, face tense—clearly, this was his first time doing something like this.
He knew his role well: he and Gu YunZhou only needed to stall long enough for HuMing to get what he needed.
They trusted HuMing, absolutely.
Still, the fact that the two of them had come to this place—who knew if others would twist the story to their advantage?
"Hello, please present your identification."
A guard stopped them. His voice was oddly flat, as if he had no real energy behind it.
They couldn't see his face clearly either—he wore dark sunglasses, hiding his expression completely.
Meanwhile, HuMing lifted his head to glance up at the massive structure before him. He hadn't expected that in the time he'd been away, this place would turn into a church.
It had originally been slated as a commercial site for the Gu family. Everyone had been eager to invest here. But midway through the process, plans had changed—suddenly, it became a church.
HuMing didn't think that was a coincidence.
Normally, people moved according to the Gu family's will. But this abrupt reversal? It reeked of conspiracy.
Add in Gu ZhaoChuan's disappearance, and HuMing was convinced—this place hid secrets.
With that in mind, HuMing slipped through the building's back entrance, mingling in with a garbage truck.
Inside, he was startled to see how many people were already there.
They shuffled about like the walking dead, their faces blank and lifeless.
The sight wasn't unfamiliar.
In his past life, he'd seen people under Francis's control—they'd looked exactly like this. These people were the same. This was clearly a base of operations.
To pull this off, they must have control over quite a few officials.
HuMing's gaze dimmed, flashes of memory sparking behind his eyes.
He moved with the crowd, following their slow procession deeper inside.
It wasn't clear how long they walked, but eventually they arrived at a large hall.
The room was completely bare, save for a single grand stage and a microphone at the center.
HuMing narrowed his eyes and was just about to investigate when a group of burly men entered from the back.
Unlike the lifeless crowd, these men were clearly different—muscular, veins bulging across their skin like their bodies had been deliberately enhanced.
Thump. Thump. Thump.
A voice crackled to life from the loudspeakers, one HuMing had never heard before.
"Welcome, dear believers. It's time again for our weekly prayer. You've received our blessings—now it's time to give a little something back. Don't worry, it's just a small favor."
The moment the voice ended, the entire crowd dropped to their knees in unison, as if worshiping the person behind the voice.
But as they knelt, HuMing remained standing, stark and upright among them.
That made him instantly noticeable.
All eyes turned toward him.
And from the speakers, the voice addressed him again.
"Mr. HuMing, I thought you'd hide in the crowd and kneel before me…"
"You invited Xia Chen and Gu YunZhou—how could I not come? But forcing your guests to kneel the moment they arrive… isn't that a bit rude?"
The whole situation was too strange.
This was supposed to be a secretive, tightly guarded church, and yet they'd let Xia Chen in so easily?
It felt off. Deliberate.
Even his own entry had been far too smooth—no barriers, no checks. Like they wanted him here.
Too many coincidences. And HuMing didn't believe in coincidences.
"You're right. That was impolite of me. So tell me, what brings you here today? The Gu family isn't facing bankruptcy, as far as I know?"
"A newly opened church? Of course I had to pay a visit. Don't be fooled by my appearance—I'm a loyal follower."
"A follower? You must be joking, Mr. HuMing. You've never joined our faith. You're not one of us."
"Of course you'd say that—your rank's too low. But if you tell your boss who I really am, he'll know. Back in the day, I outranked you by far."
A mocking smile curled at HuMing's lips.
That was a long, long time ago—a past life he had no desire to revisit.
What mattered now was uncovering this man's identity.
The speaker went silent for a long moment. Then, suddenly, he ordered everyone around HuMing to back away.
In a flash, the once-crowded hall cleared out.
From behind a wall, a figure slowly stepped forward.
He showed no emotion on his face. But in his eyes—there was something. A flicker of recognition.
As if… this wasn't the first time they'd met.
Could he be connected to this body's original identity?
HuMing stared at him closely. The man, in turn, walked straight toward him.
"This is the first time I've looked at you up close. You're not quite what the rumors suggest."
"Rumors? Where did you hear about me?"
HuMing began to suspect this man, too, might be a transmigrator—sent here to help Francis. But the man only shook his head.
Then he said,
"You're the one who put Han ShuYi behind bars. You're the one who drove Gu ZhaoChuan out of the Gu family. Aren't those your doing?"
"First of all, Han ShuYi went to prison for murder. Second, Gu ZhaoChuan left the family of his own will—he vanished before I even returned."
"But it all happened through you. They tried to go against you… and couldn't even grasp your depth," the man said, circling HuMing like a scanner.
HuMing didn't like that look—like he was just a set of data to be analyzed.
But what was this man's goal in talking to him like this? Could it be… he had his own issues with Francis?
"I know why you're here today. I know what you want. So I'll tell you—this place is that man's base in the capital. And our next target… is you."
"Why tell me this?" HuMing narrowed his eyes. "What, you people enjoy bragging before the fall?"
The man gave a mysterious smile, leaning close to whisper in HuMing's ear—
"Because the moment you stepped through those doors… we already made our move on the people close to you."
HuMing's pupils shrank.
He lunged to grab the man by the collar—but the figure slipped away like a ghost.
"You're good. A second slower, and you'd have had me."
"Who are you?!"
The man chuckled, then said,
"Allow me to introduce myself. If nothing had changed… my name should have been Han ShuYi."
