"That question... you'll probably have to ask the one pulling the strings," Han ShuYi replied flatly. "But I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you. After all this time, your real brother might not even be alive anymore."
He hadn't found a single clue about the Han family's actual eldest son.
Maybe, when the identities were swapped back then, that child had already been dealt with.
Ruo Dan, who was steering the speedboat at the front, suddenly burst into laughter upon hearing Han ShuYi's words.
"So, Han ShuYi, you've finally accepted your identity? You're admitting you've got nothing left now?"
"And what if I am?" Han ShuYi's voice was calm. "I've long understood—no one in this world will save me. If I have to give up everything for survival, then so be it."
"Hah. Sounds like we're the same kind of people." Ruo Dan's voice turned cold. "But tell me this—why did you let HuMing live? You knew as well as I did that as long as he's alive, he's a threat. If he were dead, we wouldn't even be in this mess."
His words dripped with venom, bitterness lacing his tone.
Han ShuYi lowered his eyes, fingers drumming slowly against the boat.
"Heh. Don't act like you don't have your own agenda. You all wanted to use me, to make me your scapegoat. Obviously, I had to play my own game too. Trust? That stuff's worthless."
Ruo Dan had no comeback. Everything Han ShuYi said was true—he had never once planned to let Han ShuYi walk away alive.
But things hadn't gone as planned. Too many variables had slipped out of control.
Right now, the only thing they could do was escape. Survive first. Everything else could wait.
Han YunXi's eyes stayed locked on Han ShuYi. He returned her gaze without flinching.
She didn't know when—or if—anyone would come to rescue her. Or maybe, these two had never intended to keep her alive to begin with.
The speedboat sped over the open sea, its destination unknown.
"So what now?" she finally asked. "You're just going to stay on the run like this?"
She didn't understand what Han ShuYi was thinking anymore.
But one thing was clear: his condition was worsening.
The cloth around his arm had barely stopped the bleeding, and the cold night air was sapping his strength. His body trembled slightly.
Han ShuYi felt lightheaded. Cold sweat poured down his forehead.
All he could think about was surviving the next few hours. The rest… maybe he'd just have to wait for HuMing to come.
His hand clutched at his abdomen, a dull ache spreading through it, but he didn't make a sound.
Han YunXi opened her mouth to ask about his condition, but before she could speak, Han ShuYi shook his head.
The small gesture froze her in place. Something about it unsettled her. He was planning something.
Then Han ShuYi turned his gaze to the back of the boat.
Faint light flickered in the distance—barely noticeable.
A pale smile crept across his bloodless lips.
He's here.
Following Han ShuYi's line of sight, Han YunXi saw it too.
Her eyes widened in disbelief.
No… It couldn't be…
Could Han ShuYi really be working with HuMing?
But when she thought about it, it all started to make sense. Han ShuYi never tried to kill HuMing. HuMing had infiltrated the cargo ship so smoothly… As if some invisible agreement had been made between them.
Han ShuYi shifted his gaze forward again and stood, casually blocking Ruo Dan's view of the back.
He slowly sat down beside him.
"Ruo Dan," he said, voice low, "You can't go back to Gu ZhaoChuan now, can you? That man's not the forgiving type. The moment he finds out you failed, he'll never let you live."
"What are you getting at?"
"I'm saying… maybe we could work together again. Gu ZhaoChuan wants you dead. HuMing wants us dead. But if we team up, maybe we've got a shot at taking them both down."
Ruo Dan narrowed his eyes, gauging him. Measuring the weight of those words.
But Han ShuYi simply leaned back in the seat, his tone lazy and casual.
"You know it too, right? We can't beat HuMing alone."
"Tch. And what, you think I'll trust you now?" Ruo Dan snorted. "You don't trust me. I don't trust you. You think either of us is still capable of trust at this point?"
"That depends on you. If you can't trust me, then fine—once we make land, we part ways. But Han YunXi comes with me."
Han ShuYi laid out his terms clearly.
But Ruo Dan wasn't buying it.
"No. She stays with me. She's my only leverage against HuMing. But… your proposal isn't worthless. We do have the same goal."
He paused to consider it more seriously. Han ShuYi's offer was tempting.
The boat's speed slowed as they approached shallower waters.
Han YunXi's eyes flicked to the rear of the boat—the light behind them was gone.
Darkness engulfed the sea once more.
She bit her lip, silently praying that Ruo Dan wouldn't turn around just yet.
But Ruo Dan, deep in thought, suddenly froze.
A realization struck him.
He slowly turned toward Han ShuYi, eyes narrowing.
"You've been talking a lot about HuMing. But I haven't seen you lay a finger on him."
"What are you implying?"
"I mean—he found you before I did, didn't he? Did the two of you make some kind of deal back then?"
Han ShuYi's expression twitched involuntarily. His heart skipped a beat.
Ruo Dan caught that tiny flicker of panic instantly.
He jerked around and stared into the night. The light was gone, but he could hear it now—the unmistakable hum of an engine nearby.
His hand shot to his waist.
Steel flashed in the dark.
He lunged, knife slashing straight at Han ShuYi.
Han ShuYi's pupils contracted—his instincts kicked in, and he raised his arm just in time to block Ruo Dan's elbow. The blade missed his side by a hair's breadth.
"Han ShuYi! I gave you so many chances—and you were still selling me out! No wonder HuMing always found us. It was you!"
Ruo Dan's fury boiled over.
He didn't know how Han ShuYi was signaling HuMing—but with only the three of them on this boat, it had to be him.
Han YunXi was tied up. That left one suspect.
Han ShuYi had always been hiding something.
"You should've rotted in prison! You don't deserve to live!"
Han ShuYi's teeth clenched as he pushed back with trembling arms, blood gushing again from the torn wound on his arm.
