Chapter 14: Chapter 14: The Creator
Coulson submitted the latest analysis, a report compiled after a comprehensive examination by various departments within S.H.I.E.L.D. It was a detailed report specifically about Downey.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had never relaxed its surveillance on Downey. For an agency as powerful as S.H.I.E.L.D., with authority granted by the World Security Council, keeping tabs on someone in a modern city was far too easy.
"How is he doing now?" asked Nick Fury, the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. Fury held the highest authority within the organization.
Clad in black, tall and intimidating, he exuded an overwhelming sense of power. His signature eye patch over one eye added to his stern presence.
Fury was particularly concerned about Downey's situation.
"According to our monitoring, he was taken by the Red Devil. He should be at the Brotherhood headquarters by now," Coulson reported, handing over the document to Fury.
Fury frowned, clearly displeased. This was among the last outcomes he had hoped for.
The ideal scenario would have been for Downey to be recruited by S.H.I.E.L.D., becoming part of the organization, under Fury's command, serving their goals.
But if Downey were to join the Brotherhood, it would spell serious trouble. Given Magneto's aggressive nature, it was unlikely that things would remain peaceful for long.
"Can we find a way to assassinate him? We shouldn't have let him live just to appease Professor X. Keeping him around was a mistake," Fury muttered, flipping through the dossier.
It contained all sorts of information on Downey—down to the smallest details, like his daily meals.
When Professor X first mentally contacted S.H.I.E.L.D., he had asked them to save Downey. Fury, intrigued by the idea of recruiting a level-four mutant, saw an opportunity to control a potential trump card capable of balancing the mutant issue.
So, he had agreed to help, but now it was spiraling out of his control.
Coulson's expression grew more serious, which was rare for someone known for his calm and friendly demeanor. It meant something big was happening.
"According to our psychological analysis, it's unlikely that Downey will truly join the Brotherhood," Coulson continued.
"He's got a strong sense of individuality and is difficult to sway—especially after the trauma of losing his parents. A person like him isn't easily manipulated.
Professor X might have a chance with his telepathy, but Magneto? Not a chance. In a way, this might be a good thing."
S.H.I.E.L.D. had not given up on the idea of recruiting Downey. A level-four mutant was like a walking nuclear arsenal, capable of tipping the scales of power in favor of whoever controlled him.
An organization like S.H.I.E.L.D. could benefit enormously from having such a powerful asset.
For years, S.H.I.E.L.D. had faced Magneto, sometimes with disastrous results. Without Magneto, battles ended in a draw, but with him, S.H.I.E.L.D. was usually soundly defeated, sometimes even completely wiped out.
Fury continued to listen quietly as he read the report.
Coulson elaborated, "Downey is someone you can reason with, and so far, he hasn't been repelled by our recruitment efforts. He's aware of our interest, but he hasn't rejected it outright."
"Good. Keep a close watch on him, and look for any chance to bring him over to our side," Fury said as he stopped at one particular page. It detailed Downey's abilities, and what Fury read left him deeply concerned.
According to the report, Downey's power was centered around "creation"—in the truest sense of the word.
"Incredible," Coulson remarked. "We've reviewed past cases of mutant powers, but Downey's ability is unique, bordering on miraculous."
"He can turn ordinary objects—like cars and phones—into robots. He can restructure them at the atomic level, meaning that, with enough skill, he could potentially transform anything, from tanks to aircraft carriers, into his creations.
In the information age, his power makes him almost godlike. If his abilities grow, he could summon an entire army of machines at will, each fully functional, with limbs and sensory capabilities. It's almost as if..."
"As if he were the Creator," Fury finished, his tone heavy.
The report also mentioned a thorough inspection conducted by S.H.I.E.L.D. during Downey's two-day coma.
His van showed unique frequency fluctuations that matched Downey's own, and residual energy that remained unresolved.
S.H.I.E.L.D. had also investigated the manufacturer of the van but found no discrepancies. Their subsequent investigation into the company's cars sold in the U.S. over recent years similarly revealed nothing unusual.
"There's no point in pursuing that lead any further," Fury said, his one eye gleaming sharply.
While "Creator" was a grand term, Downey was not yet capable of creating true life forms.
However, Fury knew that if Downey ever succeeded in giving his creations souls, he would become a god-like figure, having created an entire race of silicon-based life.
Fury felt uneasy. The world was becoming stranger, more dangerous. He made a mental note to accelerate research on the Tesseract, as new threats seemed to emerge constantly.
Just recently, S.H.I.E.L.D. had lost track of a mysterious woman. She appeared to be an expert hacker and had managed to erase almost all traces of her existence.
According to their findings, this woman might have been over a century old, dating back to World War I...
...
Meanwhile, Downey was taken to the Brotherhood's headquarters, located on a remote island.
The island had been transformed beyond recognition into a vast steel city, with Magneto importing colossal amounts of metal to complete the construction.
The entire island was now a veritable capital of steel.
Although Downey had prepared himself mentally, seeing the island in person still left him in awe.
Magneto wielded his power openly and unapologetically, broadcasting his strength to the world.
The most shocking part? The entire city was legal.
During World War II, Magneto had stolen a massive amount of gold from the Nazis. After the war, he had used that wealth to purchase the island's ownership from the United Nations...
Now, the world's governments could do nothing about it, seething as they watched Magneto build his steel empire.
They considered using nuclear weapons to destroy the island, but they didn't dare. Even if they did, it would likely be futile. Helpless, they could only watch in frustration as Magneto carried on.
