Chapter 81: Chapter 78: The clash
The assembled heroes stood in silence, watching as Darkseid approached with a fleet of Parademons flooding into the planet through the pillar of light. The massive figure floated forward, his aura of despair and destruction making the air thick and oppressive.
"I'm guessing that's the bad guy Robocop and Lunaris were talking about," Green Lantern said, breaking the silence with a forced attempt at humor.
"Lucky guess," Batman replied in what could almost pass as sarcasm, though his tone remained grim. Pressing his thumbs together, he accessed his orbiting satellites, commanding them to focus on the approaching god.
Superman snorted, folding his arms confidently. "He doesn't look so tough."
Toneri floated forward, his blank expression giving way to a faint smirk. "Oh, but he is more than tough," he said, his voice calm but foreboding.
Diana narrowed her eyes, stepping closer. "Why do you say it like that?"
Toneri's gaze didn't waver from Darkseid. "If you could see and feel what I am feeling right now, you'd understand. He's not a foe to be taken lightly."
Flash tilted his head, noticing the faint smile on Toneri's face. "Then why are you smiling?"
Toneri said nothing, his expression unreadable.
Suddenly, the roar of jet engines cut through the tension as three F-35 multirole fighter jets dove from the low-hanging clouds. They descended rapidly toward the harbor, weapons locked onto Darkseid's colossal form. With precision, the jets unleashed their payload of missiles, the thunderous detonations echoing across the bay as explosions engulfed the New God.
Boom. Boom. Boom.
As the smoke cleared, Darkseid emerged from the destruction completely unharmed, his form untouched by the jets' assault. The fiery glow of his eyes intensified, emanating malevolent energy that caused Toneri to narrow his own.
Before Toneri could act, a few of his puppets riding chakra-powered birds swooped in, firing glowing orbs of energy at Darkseid. The orbs streaked toward the New God, but his glowing eyes erupted with twin beams of crimson energy, zigzagging unpredictably. The Omega Beams seared through the chakra orbs, detonating them in white-hot explosions, before curving to target the puppets and the F-35 jets.
The beams sliced through the puppets with brutal efficiency, erasing them from existence. The fighter jets attempted to evade, but the beams tracked them unerringly, striking and disintegrating them midair.
The debris rained down into the ocean as silence fell once again.
"No!" Flash gasped in horror, the scene of destruction leaving him shaken. The other heroes remained silent, their jaws clenched and fists tight as they processed what had just happened. Toneri felt their unease but remained focused, knowing the worst was still to come.
Darkseid's deep voice rumbled like distant thunder, his words reverberating through the air. "I am entropy. I am death… I am DARKSEID."
Toneri stepped forward, his tone empty but firm. "I suggest you all prepare yourselves for combat. He will not be an easy opponent. He has faced countless opposition across many worlds, and his being here means they all failed. But failure is not an option for Earth."
His words carried weight, and the assembled heroes glanced at him with newfound respect. Even Batman's calculating gaze softened slightly, his expression betraying a hint of admiration.
Darkseid came to a stop less than twenty feet away from the group, his massive frame towering over them. Yet he simply waited, his glowing red eyes scanning them in silence. Not even his Parademons moved behind him.
Toneri floated forward slowly, his blank expression softening into a gentle smile. He spoke, his voice calm and resonant:
"From one guest to another, I welcome you, Darkseid, to Earth."
As his words echoed across the battlefield, a sudden, crushing and overwhelming chakra pressure descended upon the area, pressing down on everything and everyone present causing debris to float a few feet off the ground and structures to groan. The air itself seemed to vibrate with the weight of Toneri's immense chakra, rippling outward like invisible tidal waves crashing against the New God.
The heroes, caught off guard, visibly tensed as they felt the pressure. Batman narrowed his eyes, his analytical mind racing. 'What did I just feel?' he thought, unable to categorize the sensation.
Superman frowned, his enhanced senses picking up more detail. It wasn't gravity, nor any other force he could name. 'No… it's something else,' he thought, his fists clenching involuntarily.
Diana's reaction was more visceral. Her breath hitched as she was reminded of the divine presence of the gods she had encountered in the past. While Toneri's aura wasn't on their level, it still carried a faint echo of that same overwhelming power. The sensation left her momentarily shaken.
Darkseid, however, remained calm. The oppressive chakra weighed on him, but it elicited nothing more than a deep, rumbling hum of acknowledgment. His burning red eyes narrowed slightly, curiosity flickering in their depths as he studied Toneri.
The two floated silently, staring at one another as the tension in the air reached its breaking point. Neither moved, but their presence alone was enough to make the world feel like it was holding its breath.
The heroes exchanged uncertain glances, unsure whether they were witnessing an impending clash or something far more dangerous.
The tension was palpable, and it felt like an opportunity they should exploit. But Green Lantern, impatient and brimming with confidence, spoke up. "Well, Lunaris, if you're not gonna do anything, then stand back and peep the light show! Green Lantern's got this!"
His emerald ring glowed brightly as he shot into the air, forming a massive green spiked gauntlet around his fist.
"Wait, no!" Toneri called out, but Green Lantern didn't listen.
The space cop flew directly at Darkseid, swinging the giant construct with all his strength. The green fist smashed into the New God's face with a thunderous impact. The construct shattered instantly, and Darkseid remained unmoved, the attack barely registering as an annoyance.
In a blur of motion, Darkseid retaliated. The sheer speed of his response was staggering, leaving no doubt he had allowed the hit just to measure their strength. Before Green Lantern could recover from his overextended punch, Darkseid's massive fist struck him.
The force of the punch shattered Green Lantern's protective force field and sent him hurtling through the air like a rocket. He crashed through a tree and slammed into the side of a building, the impact shaking the structure as debris fell to the ground.
The Parademons, as if waiting for a signal, immediately charged toward the downed Green Lantern.
Toneri didn't hesitate. Facing his palm toward the swarm, he fired a barrage of glowing chakra rods, impaling the Parademons and pinning them to the building. In one swift motion, he conjured another chakra rod and transformed it into a katana, cleaving through the remaining attackers.
Toneri's voice rang out sharply, cutting through the chaotic battlefield like a whip. "Don't just stand there like idiots. MOVE!"
The command jolted the heroes into action.
Like a bolt of lightning, the Flash took off, moving at impossible speeds to reach his injured teammate, blitzing the swarm of Parademons moving too close to the others.
Superman floated up, his eyes glowing crimson as precise beams of heat vision carved through dozens of Parademons. Shazam, covered in crackling lightning, joined the effort, obliterating swathes of enemies with thunderous strikes.
Wonder Woman charged in right behind them, her Amazonian sword cleaving through the Parademons with ease, while her enhanced punches and kicks sent others flying. Her movements were fluid and deadly, the strength behind each strike showing why she was a warrior born.
Cyborg's arm morphed into a white noise cannon, releasing a powerful sonic burst that ripped apart Parademons in front of him. His shoulders sprouted missile pods that fired with precision, and two swiveling turrets emerged from his back to provide anti-air support. Thrusters activated, lifting him into the air as superheated plasma bolts rained down on any Parademons attempting to head deeper into the city.
Batman, ever resourceful, pulled out a set of Batarangs, scanning for threats. As a Parademon attempted to sneak up on him, a long black rod impaled the creature mid-flight. Batman's eyes narrowed as he looked up to see Toneri hovering nearby.
"Use that," Toneri said simply, his tone brooking no argument.
Batman picked up the chakra rod, and the moment his hands touched it, the rod shrank and split into two shorter staves before morphing again into sleek Batarangs, perfectly tailored to his needs. Batman's mind raced. 'Hmm... adaptive weaponry.' He nodded slightly to himself. "This will do nicely," he muttered, not bothering to say thank you as he threw one of the newly-formed Batarangs with deadly precision, taking down another Parademon.
Above them, Toneri continued his calm yet decisive movements. A Parademon flew directly into his path, trying to stop him. With a single strike, Toneri punched the creature with enough force to send it hurtling toward Darkseid below. The projectile was swatted aside by the New God with a negligent backhand, but the exchange gave Toneri a moment to prepare.
A faint smirk graced his lips as he began forming a new staff, pouring chakra into its creation. As he hovered mid-air, the staff took shape, the edges glowing with an orange cap that crackled with lightning. The air around him shifted violently as he shot forward at hypersonic velocities, creating an impressive shockwave in his wake. The pressure created a vacuum behind him, scattering nearby Parademons like leaves in a storm.
Darkseid, standing stoically below, turned his attention to Green Lantern, who had constructed a massive train and sent it barreling toward him. The New God didn't flinch as the construct collided with him, breaking apart harmlessly against his form.
The staff in Toneri's hand completed its formation just as an orange glow enveloped his eyes, green pigment appearing around them—a clear sign of his entrance into Sage Mode. His power surged visibly, causing the very air to ripple with intensity.
In an instant, Toneri was beside Darkseid, the gap between them closed with terrifying speed. The New God, focused on finishing Green Lantern with his Omega Beams, barely had time to react as Toneri swung the lightning-covered staff. The weapon, infused with enormous chakra and enhanced by Sage Mode, collided with Darkseid's face.
A brilliant flash of light erupted from the point of impact, accompanied by a deafening thunderclap that echoed across the city. The sheer force of the blow caused the ground beneath Darkseid to crater, sending shockwaves that shattered windows and collapsed nearby structures. For the first time since his arrival on Earth, Darkseid felt something—pain.
The Parademons paused, their attention fixed on the sight before them. Their god, their seemingly invincible master, had been struck down by a pale stranger and now lay flat on his back.
Superman, seeing the opportunity, charged in and delivered a devastating punch to Darkseid's face just as the New God was attempting to rise. The hit caused another thunderclap, the soundwave rattling the entire city. The ground beneath them splintered further, leaving massive craters in their wake.
The combined force of Superman's punch and Toneri's strike was immense. The adamantine staff in Toneri's hands shattered under the strain, but the smirk on his face remained. The damage was done.
As the debris settled, the heroes took in the scene before them. Darkseid, though still conscious, lay embedded in the ground, his imposing figure momentarily subdued.
Superman raised his fist to strike again, while Toneri reformed another staff, ready to follow up. But Darkseid moved with unexpected agility, grabbing Superman's cape and using the Kryptonian's own body as a shield. Toneri stopped his attack just in time to avoid hitting Superman, but the hesitation gave Darkseid the opening he needed.
With a powerful swing, Darkseid used Superman's body as a weapon, slamming Toneri with enough force to send him hurtling across the city at Mach 12. Superman himself was thrown into the street, carving a deep trench into the pavement.
Green Lantern, undeterred, flew back into the fray. "I'm not through with you!" he shouted, forming a massive sledgehammer construct and bringing it down on Darkseid.
The New God barely glanced at the attack before catching the construct in his hand. With a casual squeeze, the green energy construct shattered, and Darkseid grabbed Green Lantern's arm. The crushing grip elicited a cry of pain before Darkseid tossed him aside like a rag doll.
Wonder Woman, seeing an opening, leapt onto a Parademon behind Cyborg and charged toward Darkseid, her blade poised to strike. She delivered a powerful slash, but the weapon barely scratched the New God's skin. Darkseid retaliated with a brutal punch that sent her rocketing away.
Superman, now recovered, caught Diana mid-air before flying her back into the fight. Shazam appeared beside her, grinning despite the chaos. "Is that your boyfriend?" he teased.
Diana glanced at him, unamused. "No."
"Cool. Lemme show you something awesome," Shazam replied before charging Darkseid.
"Hey, Blackheart the Death Eater, or whatever your World of Warcraft name is—suck on this!" Shazam taunted as he unleashed a massive bolt of lightning. The attack struck Darkseid square in the chest, but it did little more than annoy the god. Darkseid's eyes lit up, and he unleashed his Omega Beams, forcing Shazam's lightning back toward him. The resulting clash ended with Shazam screaming in pain as he crashed into the ground, creating a crater.
Darkseid was about to advance when the ground beneath him shifted violently. "Doton: Chidokaku(Earth style: mobile core)!" a voice called out. The earth rose, creating a massive platform that lifted Darkseid off the ground.
Toneri appeared above him, massive amounts of steam exuding from his body as he muttered, "Senpou Futton: Kairiki Musō( sage art; boil release: unrivaled strength)." His body radiated an overwhelming heat and strength, the pressure in the air becoming unbearable.
Darkseid looked up, his expression hardening as Toneri brought down both hands, now glowing with immense energy. The speed and strength of the attack were further amplified as Toneri added, "Senpou Jinton: Mueishō(sage art; swift style: shadowless flight)," his already incredible velocity quintupled.
The resulting clash was cataclysmic. The earth platform disintegrated under the force, and space itself seemed to distort around the point of impact. A massive gust of superheated wind tore through the battlefield, collapsing nearby buildings as their structures failed against the shockwave.
Green Lantern barely managed to form a shield to protect himself and Batman from the fallout. Above, Superman hovered, watching in anticipation as the dust began to settle.
