Toneri in DC

Chapter 80: Chapter 77: He’s here

Superman's heat vision was seconds from firing when Toneri placed a calm hand on his shoulder. "Hold on," Toneri said firmly. "He's not hostile."

Before Superman could argue, Flash zipped in front of them, pressing a hand to Superman's chest. "Lunaris is right. I can vouch for him. He was at S.T.A.R. Labs."

Toneri glanced back at Diana, his Byakugan still active. "Besides," he added coolly, "Wonder Woman attacked first." His piercing gaze shifted to Diana, who looked away, visibly embarrassed.

"I thought he was one of them," she said softly, avoiding Toneri's judgmental look.

"Hmm," Batman grunted, his tone unreadable but clearly suspicious.

Toneri turned his Byakugan forward again, scanning the area. His gaze settled on a figure hovering just above them, clad in Red and white cape with a golden lightning bolt emblazoned on his chest. 'Hmm… he's here as well, I see,' Toneri thought as the figure pulled back his white hood.

"Hey, guys! I'm Shazam," the newcomer announced, his voice confident and casual, lightning flickering around him.

Toneri studied him silently. 'Stronger,' he thought, assessing Shazam's energy.

Shazam pointed at the cyborg. "I'm with him!"

Cyborg immediately shook his head. "He's not with me," he said flatly.

Toneri raised an eyebrow, his voice calm but curious. "Is that so? Then who are you?"

"Yeah, what he said," Green Lantern chimed in, his ring glowing faintly.

Cyborg ignored their pointed stares, instead focusing on the dire situation. "That doesn't matter. What does matter is what I know about those." He gestured at the dead Parademons around them.

Batman's eyes narrowed, his voice sharp. "Which is?"

Cyborg took a breath before speaking. "I've… I've talked to their technology. I know their plan. They're terraforming the Earth."

Toneri sighed deeply, confirming his statement. "He's right," he said grimly.

Batman's eyes shifted to Toneri. "You know something."

Toneri nodded reluctantly. "Like Cyborg, I was able to connect with one of the boxes… called Boom Tubes."

"Boom Tubes?" Superman asked, raising an eyebrow.

Toneri glanced at him and continued. "They are dimensional gateways that allow for instant transportation across vast distances, even between worlds. They're connected to their master's technology and serve as a means of deployment."

Superman looked thoughtful, but Flash cut in impatiently. "Okay, but who the hell is this 'master' you're talking about?"

Toneri's expression darkened as his voice dropped to a grim tone. "A conqueror of worlds," he said. "He goes from one planet to the next, destroying all that stands before him, taking the inhabitants and turning them into these things." He motioned to a Parademon corpse nearby.

"Parademons."

"The boxes," he continued, "serve as arrival points for their god to step into these worlds, conquer them, and terraform the planets into barren wastelands to hold his armies."

His words hung heavy in the air as his gaze hardened, his thoughts turning inward. 'What is the difference between him and my parasitic clan?' he wondered grimly, his eyes drifting to the side. 'Hmm…'

Batman broke the tense silence, nodding. "That fits," he said.

Superman crossed his arms, his eyes narrowing. "Oh?"

Green Lantern frowned. "How do you figure?"

Batman gestured toward the distance, his voice calm but serious. "For one thing…" He pointed, and Toneri finished the thought.

"The water is on fire," Toneri said, his Byakugan observing the phenomenon in detail. Flames licked at the surface of the water, rising higher as the liquid itself began to churn unnaturally. The motion intensified, and the water lifted into a massive circular motion, forming a tsunami headed straight for the city.

As the heroes prepared to act, Superman took to the air, his determination clear. "I'll stop it—"

"Wait," Toneri interrupted, his voice commanding.

Before Superman could argue, several of Toneri's bird-shaped puppets flew into position in front of the wave. From their beaks, they fired concentrated orbs of white energy into the oncoming water. The orbs exploded on impact, dispersing the wave with precision. The force of the water broke apart and fell harmlessly to the streets below, leaving only harmless splashes.

The group stared in quiet awe at the efficiency of the puppets, but the tension quickly returned as a new threat emerged. From the center of the water, a massive pillar began to rise, pushing through the surface with an ominous hum. It towered above the city, its dark metallic structure pulsing with an eerie glow. The air around it seemed to ripple with power.

The ground trembled violently as the massive pillar continued to rise, its structure groaning ominously as it broke through the surface. Around the city, more pillars erupted from the earth, each one towering and emitting a low hum that resonated through the air. The quake rippled across the city, sending cracks spidering through streets and buildings.

Toneri narrowed his Byakugan, channeling chakra into his eyes. In an instant, his vision extended far beyond the city. Through the eyes of his puppets stationed around the globe, he saw identical pillars rising in countless locations. The sight made his jaw tighten. 'Tch… it's begun.'

From the tops of the pillars, beams of brilliant light shot into the sky, cutting through the clouds like spears. The spectacle was both breathtaking and terrifying. Toneri's attention lingered on the phenomenon for a moment. 'What is that?' he thought, his mind racing to piece it together.

Superman's voice brought him back. "What are they doing with those?" he asked, gesturing toward the light-filled structures.

Batman, standing with his arms crossed, answered in his usual cold, calculating tone. "Can't be sure," he said, his eyes scanning the horizon, "but according to what Toneri said, it's logical to assume they're harvesting people."

Toneri's expression darkened as his Byakugan continued to scan. All around the globe, the pattern was the same: Parademons swarming, herding people toward the pillars. His fists clenched as he realized what was happening. With a sharp breath, he spoke a single command that reverberated across every puppet he controlled: "Do not let them go into that light."

The reaction was immediate. Across the world, his puppets launched into action with an almost frenzied urgency, targeting every Parademon attempting to drag civilians into the pillars. In the city, the puppets stationed nearby moved with precision, slicing through the Parademons and shielding people from being taken.

Diana watched the coordinated effort, nodding her approval toward Toneri. "Impressive," she said simply.

Batman, still observing, turned to Toneri. "Can you keep most of the Parademons at bay with your puppets and prevent the harvesting?"

Toneri nodded. "I ca…," he began, but his words caught in his throat. His eyes widened as he froze, his body instinctively tensing.

The air grew heavy, suffused with a malevolence unlike anything he had ever felt before. It wasn't overtly visible yet, but Toneri could feel it—an incomprehensible shift in the world as if reality itself was bending to accommodate the presence of something.

He could feel the energy of the planet trembling, the very fabric of its essence shaking in response to the malevolent force. Toneri's Byakugan snapped toward the central pillar as a figure began to ascend from its peak. His breath hitched as the being's presence washed over him like a tidal wave, crushing and corrosive in its intensity.

From the metaphysical plane, Toneri's Byakugan saw the energy radiating from the being—a vast, sickening force that twisted and churned. It reminded him of Naruto's four-tailed form, the corrosive energy that seeped out when the jinchūriki lost control. But this… this was on an unimaginable scale.

And then he saw him.

The conqueror himself. Darkseid.

Hovering ominously over the ocean, nearly 600 meters away from the heroes, Darkseid exuded an aura of pure death and destruction. His entire existence seemed to scream annihilation, a being whose very presence corrupted and scarred reality.

Toneri's eyes narrowed as he forced himself to stay calm. 'This… will not be easy,' he thought grimly.

A fleet of Parademons emerged behind Darkseid, their formations precise, their numbers overwhelming. The conqueror's forces moved like an unstoppable tide, their silhouettes darkening the horizon as they prepared to advance.

Toneri's mind flashed back to his years of training with Hamura. He had faced countless challenges, witnessed the horrors of the Fourth Shinobi War, and most recently, his grueling battle with Ryushiki. Yet none of those encounters had exuded a presence like this.

'Well… except him,' he thought bitterly, recalling the entity that had once tried to trap him in the void—the Empty Hand. Even that being, as terrifying as it was, hadn't released the kind of pressure Darkseid did now. And then there was the Chaos Lord, Klarion… 'This sequence of reality is truly messed up,' Toneri mused darkly, 'with beings like this everywhere.'

The weight of facing yet another godlike being sank in. He sighed internally. 'Give me a break, will you?'

Yet, contrary to his grim thoughts, a faint smile tugged at Toneri's lips. Perhaps it was his pride as an Otsutsuki or the simple absurdity of his situation, but there was a part of him that welcomed the challenge.
