Chapter 8: Transition
In the evening, after finishing her tasks, Pepper arrived at Tony's villa to help him replace the device in his chest. Meanwhile, Tohka was browsing the internet the entire time. Although they had briefly considered asking her to help, the sight of Tohka happily munching on snacks with a blissfully silly expression made both of them break into a cold sweat.
So, they wisely decided to ignore Tohka. That night, Tony immediately began designing his Iron Man armor. This had nothing to do with Tohka, who was busy planning her future. While she might have been affected by her natural airheaded charm, it didn't mean she was actually stupid—she just often found it too bothersome to think deeply.
By all accounts, Tohka didn't need to worry about food or clothing, and her strength was undoubtedly top-tier on Earth. However, she didn't dare let her guard down. She was well aware that this world was filled with powerful beings—forget the cosmic entities, even their subordinates might be beyond her capability.
There was also Thanos, who in the comics had once wielded the Infinity Stones to rewrite reality, defying even the Living Tribunal. Then there was Dormammu from the dark dimension, demon lords from hell, and… well, Marvel was a chaotic mix of gods and demons.
In any case, Tohka didn't dare act as recklessly as other isekai protagonists in this world. She was sticking to playing it safe.
She had also confirmed the current state of this world. Society was relatively calm for now—Captain America was still frozen beneath the ice, and apart from mutants, there were no active superheroes.
Overall, it was still a relatively peaceful world and hadn't yet reached the chaos of heroes and villains running rampant.
Following the principle of "relying on yourself is better than relying on others," Tohka decided to become a writer, shamelessly using her knowledge of past popular works. After all, no one here could sue her for copyright infringement (this premise was already scrapped, so no complaints!).
Her first thought was Harry Potter, a novel that had taken the world by storm in her previous life.
She had the advantage of not needing to worry about publishing channels—she only needed to mention it to Tony, and it'd be handled. The bonus of her reincarnation was her enhanced memory, though in this chaotic Marvel universe, even the established lore was frequently contradicted. She couldn't be certain there weren't powerful beings she didn't know about.
Today was unusually quiet, and Tohka didn't feel like going out. Tony's villa was in the suburbs, and going anywhere required a car. Plus, she wasn't old enough—Tony had registered her age as seventeen.
As for Tony, he locked himself in the basement to design his armor, which was still in its early stages. Meanwhile, Obadiah Stane had made no moves. If Tohka guessed correctly, he was likely sending people to the site where Tony had been previously held captive.
Everything had already been altered. Whether that guy would build the armor as he did in the original story wasn't Tohka's concern. That thing would be as flimsy as paper against her and posed no threat at all.
"Why are you calling me? Aren't you worried about Pepper's safety?" The past two days had been exceptionally calm. Tohka stayed home writing novels, watching movies, and playing games. Tony remained in his lab designing his armor. Tohka had gone down to take a look but found no interest in his work.
She left without paying further attention. Obadiah Stane had also visited once, using the company as an excuse to ask Tony for the arc reactor, but Tony flatly refused.
Tony had grown wary of everyone at the company. Although he hadn't yet suspected Obadiah Stane, he no longer trusted him as he once had. As for Pepper, she had no interest in the arc reactor in his chest.
Tohka had also formally met Stane. After all, he was Tony's elder. During the press conference, she had only caught a brief glimpse of him and hadn't spoken much.
"So, this is your daughter? Last time, we only exchanged greetings. This counts as our first proper meeting. What a beautiful little girl. I'm Tony's uncle and your elder. I've even brought you a gift this time."
"Hello." Faced with the kindly bearded bald man, Tohka greeted him indifferently before leaving. While he seemed amiable on the surface, Tohka knew he was ruthless and unscrupulous in achieving his goals, making it hard for her to like him.
What's more, he was the mastermind behind the scenes. Since Tohka wasn't good at hiding her emotions, she worried she might not be able to resist cutting him down on the spot.
"Sorry, she seems a bit shy." Tony assumed Tohka's behavior was due to shyness and didn't think much of it.
"It's nothing, she's quite an interesting little girl." Obadiah didn't pay much attention to Tohka's behavior. His purpose for coming, aside from probing Tony's intentions, was to check out the little girl who had been highlighted in reports from his subordinates.
However, after meeting her, he found nothing particularly unusual about Tohka and lost interest. He was aware of mutants, but to him, Tohka seemed no different from an ordinary person. He had no concerns about her interfering with his plans.
"It's fine. As long as I'm alive, those guys won't do anything to Pepper. Their goal is my assets, and making a move on her would only expose themselves to me."
Tony was always cautious about those lurking in the shadows, which was one reason he'd been keeping a low profile recently. "By the way, I asked you here to help me record some data. Jarvis will teach you how to do it—you just need to press a button."
At that moment, Tohka noticed the device attached to Tony's legs—it was the propulsion system for his Iron Man armor.
"Alright, let me take a look. Hmm, this should be it." Eyeing a button on the control panel, Tohka figured it was the one to start recording data. However, she also noticed another icon next to it.
"Alright, I'm starting now. Help me record. Three, two, one, go!" Before Tohka could figure out what the second button did, Tony's voice prompted her to instinctively press both buttons at the same time.
Tony was immediately launched into the air, slamming hard into the ceiling before crashing back down. His loyal robot quickly rushed over to spray him with a cloud of smoke.
"Are you okay?" Seeing this, Tohka instinctively smacked the control panel and ran over to help Tony up.
