Chapter 255: thunder fruit
_____
The endpoint of the treasure map in Captain Jack's notes was this island, and it required exploration to locate the treasure.
According to Captain Jack, they first needed to find the treasure's location and then undergo a series of tests. Only by passing all the tests could they claim his treasure.
Initially, Aoki planned to follow this process step by step.
However, upon arriving, he discovered the island was much smaller than he had anticipated—its diameter was only a few hundred meters.
He realized there was a better way than honestly accepting the tests.
Under Robin's curious gaze, Aoki bent down and pressed his palms against the ground.
Boom!
The earth trembled slightly.
Moments later, the island began to rise into the air.
Crash!
Seawater poured back violently.
The fragile balance of the ocean was disrupted, massive waves surged, water walls collapsed, and billions of tons of seawater crashed down, threatening to submerge the island.
But in the next instant, the island vanished.
In a different space, hundreds of meters above the sky, the small island reappeared out of thin air.
Originally, Aoki could only store and retrieve items from the alien space if he could physically lift them. However, the power of the Float-Float Fruit had broken that limitation.
Robin finally came back to her senses. "Is this the solution you mentioned?"
Aoki nodded. "It's a pity to destroy such a magnificent sight, but not many people can see it anyway."
As he spoke, the island began to disintegrate from its edges, like a massive Lego structure breaking apart piece by piece.
The disintegration stopped when it reached the middle of the island, revealing its thickest section. Dozens of meters below the surface, a massive room surrounded by various mechanisms came into view. Inside the room were numerous boxes.
"Found it."
A smile spread across Aoki's face as the boulder he and Robin stood on slowly descended into the room.
Many of the surrounding mechanisms were already activated but hadn't fully triggered.
Robin glanced at the scene and remarked, "If Captain Jack knew his treasure was taken this way, I think he'd jump out of his coffin."
"I feel a little sorry for Captain Jack," Aoki admitted.
But only a fool would ignore an easier solution when it was available.
Aoki approached one of the boxes and opened it. A dazzling golden light immediately filled his vision.
The box was filled with gold, not as bricks but as various gold utensils piled together.
He opened another box—more gold.
Aoki turned to Robin. "Everyone who sees it gets a share. Pick something."
"Alright," Robin replied without hesitation. She rummaged through one of the boxes and selected a gold necklace and a gold plate.
"Take more!" Aoki urged.
"This is enough," Robin said, shaking her head.
She didn't have much desire for wealth. The amount she had chosen, once converted into money, would last her a long time.
Aoki didn't push further and proceeded to open the rest of the boxes.
The boxes on the left contained gold and jewelry, while those on the right held weapons.
But what he truly sought was nowhere to be found.
"Isn't it here? Could there be another treasure room?" Aoki frowned slightly.
"Aoki, look," Robin said, pointing deeper into the room.
Following her gaze, Aoki noticed a stone pillar. Upon closer inspection, the top portion was carved into the shape of a box.
He quickly walked over.
It was indeed a box, and it had no lock. With a light touch, he lifted the lid and opened it.
Lying quietly inside the box was a peculiar fruit, entirely green and adorned with spiral cloud patterns.
A strange glint appeared in Robin's eyes.
"More than a hundred years have passed, yet this Devil Fruit remains intact."
"Perhaps Devil Fruits don't rot at all," Aoki replied, his emotions fluctuating.
He had invested significant effort into obtaining this treasure.
But in the end, it was worth it.
To acquire the Dark-Dark Fruit, Blackbeard had spent over 20 years lurking within the Whitebeard Pirates.
A powerful Devil Fruit has the potential to completely change a person's destiny.
The Dark-Dark Fruit held that power, and so did the mythical beast species.
Aoki reached out and picked up the Devil Fruit, his mask reflecting a thoughtful expression.
Captain Jack's notes had recorded this as a mythical beast species of the Human-Human Fruit but omitted any details about its specific form.
Currently, Aoki knew of four Human-Human Fruits in existence. Aside from Chopper's ordinary human form, the others were all mythical beast types:
The Wanyudo form, consumed by a fox. It was the weakest, yet still capable of battling Zoro.
The Giant Buddha form, wielded by Sengoku, the current Navy Marshal and one of the most powerful men on the sea.
The Nika form, a Devil Fruit bearing the name of a god.
Every mythical beast species of the Human-Human Fruit was immensely powerful.
Robin's voice interrupted his thoughts. "Are you planning to eat this Devil Fruit?"
Aoki nodded.
Although the prospect of dual Thunder Fruit abilities was enticing, this decision wasn't just about gaining power—it was about acquiring a new profession. He needed to choose the better option.
With this resolve, Aoki no longer hesitated. He opened his mouth and took a bite of the Devil Fruit.
The next moment, his movements froze, and his face turned slightly green.
Robin chuckled softly.
"Devil Fruits taste terrible, but you only need one bite."
Aoki knew this. He had expected to avoid the infamous taste, believing his dulled sense of taste would protect him.
Yet he was wrong.
The vile flavor of the Devil Fruit seemed to go beyond mere taste buds.
Gritting his teeth, Aoki steeled himself and swallowed the rest of the fruit in one go.
Yes, a single bite was enough to gain its power, but with the system involved, who knew what might happen? To be safe, it was better to eat it all.
It was just a bad taste, after all. For someone who had long lost his sense of taste, this was an unusual experience.
Aoki tried to comfort himself, but he couldn't stop himself from dry-heaving.
"Ugh!"
Just then, a familiar voice echoed in his mind.
[Ding Dong! Special power detected!]
[Absorbing!]
"It's here!"
Aoki's spirits lifted, and he immediately forgot the nauseating taste of the Devil Fruit.
Although he was confident about gaining a new profession, he couldn't relax until it was confirmed.
Hearing this notification, the weight in his heart finally lifted.
Now, it was just a matter of seeing what kind of profession he would obtain.
[Power absorption completed! Congratulations on obtaining the profession 'Spirit of Nature.']
"Spirit of Nature?"
A flood of information surged into Aoki's mind.
In humanity's early days, before the rise of religion, people witnessed the raw power of nature. Awe and reverence for its might led to the worship of nature itself.
Thus, the Spirit of Nature was born.
