Chapter 36
Chapter 36: A Bad Temper
Yukinoshita Haruno, the “Great Demon King,” is the arch-nemesis of lone wolves. What might be an entirely normal thing when spoken through her mouth always becomes twisted and bizarre.
Of course, Hikigaya would never admit that he was afraid someone would discover that he was “on a date with a girl in a couple’s cafe.” No way, that is absolutely impossible!
Hikigaya, you must stay calm!
Hikigaya stiffened his face while praying inwardly not to be spotted by someone he knew.
“Hehe, Hikigaya-kun, you’re not thinking, ‘I really hope I don’t get caught by someone I know,’ are you?” Yukinoshita casually picked up a cube of sugar and dropped it into Hikigaya’s coffee.
“…H-how could that be!” Hikigaya tilted his head in protest.
“Then why the mysterious pause?”
Yukinoshita, as if discovering something amusing, picked up another sugar cube and dropped it into Hikigaya’s coffee.
“Hmm, Yukinoshita-san, I must clarify something— I don’t know anyone in this school, so your assumption is completely unfounded!” Hikigaya sneered.
Damn “Great Demon King,” don’t you know that people who force others to face uncomfortable truths are the worst!
“And also…” Hikigaya grabbed Yukinoshita’s hand, a vein popping on his forehead. “No! More! Sugar!”
“Huh? Doesn’t Hikigaya-kun love sweet, sugary coffee? I just wanted to make you a little happier…” Yukinoshita lowered her head, giving a look that seemed to say, ‘I put in all this effort, and you misunderstand me.’
To outsiders, Hikigaya seems like the type of guy who would disappoint a girl’s sincere feelings, a typical dense and selfish guy, while Yukinoshita appears to be the cautious girl trying to please a boy she likes but is cruelly hurt in the process.
Hikigaya stared dumbfounded. If there were an Academy Award, no way should Yukinoshita Haruno not win it!
“I do like sweet coffee, but that doesn’t mean I want to become a sugar cube!”
“Haha, Hikigaya-kun, you’re really funny!” Yukinoshita giggled, covering her mouth.
For some reason, whenever she met Hikigaya, Yukinoshita always felt an overwhelming urge to tease him, and every time she saw Hikigaya’s expression of utter frustration, she felt inexplicably satisfied.
This is the bad nature of Yukinoshita Haruno, the woman known for being so cruel: while normal people would cherish what they like, she treats it like a toy, playing with it until it breaks. For things she dislikes, she destroys them without hesitation.
Hikigaya naturally understood the bad nature of the “Great Demon King.” But was this really the true side of her?
For those who were not familiar with Yukinoshita, it was easy to be deceived by the “mask” she wore on her face. However, if one got to know her, they would realize that beneath that mask lay some sort of “truth.”
But… was the truth beneath the mask really Yukinoshita Haruno’s true face?
It was also possible that Yukinoshita deliberately showed a “truth” that was “exposed” as a way to deceive him. Hikigaya couldn’t see through this sixteen-year-old girl, who seemed to have layers upon layers of masks and defenses built around her. What had she gone through to feel the need to hide her true self?
“So… Yukinoshita-san, let’s get to the point already,” Hikigaya urged.
“Oh? Aren’t you curious why I’m in the student council?” Yukinoshita put on a “ask me” expression, but Hikigaya pretended not to understand.
“This is Yukinoshita-san’s secret, please rest assured, I would never casually ask.”
Hikigaya’s answer immediately made Yukinoshita pout in complaint. “What? I was looking forward to it! Hikigaya-kun, you really have no sense of romance. You’re losing points in front of a girl!”
Yukinoshita’s expression was perfect—no stiffness, natural, and utterly pitiable.
Heh!
Seeing this, Hikigaya remained unmoved, and inside he was sneering. The Lone Ranger will not fall for the same trick twice!
Although he didn’t know exactly how Yukinoshita managed to convince the stern student council president, Hikigaya still vaguely sensed a sense of discomfort.
“Actually, it’s not really a secret. It’s just that the student council president and I made a little deal.”
“Wait!” Hikigaya quickly interrupted. “Since when did it become ‘we’?”
“Huh? Aren’t we both on the same boat now?” Yukinoshita said naturally. “I encountered trouble, and Hikigaya-kun wouldn’t just stand by, right? And the same goes for you. This thing is called… destiny, right?”
“…”
Hikigaya thought it was absurd, but at the same time, he felt that Yukinoshita’s words weren’t entirely without merit.
“I… I still don’t know if I can join the student council,” Hikigaya could only comfort himself this way.
But at this point, Yukinoshita suddenly fell silent, her deep eyes staring into Hikigaya’s.
“Earlier in the student council office, Hikigaya-kun lied, didn’t you?”
“W-what do you mean?”
Hikigaya stared at Yukinoshita in shock, not understanding why she would suddenly say that. His brows furrowed. “Yukinoshita-san, are you being too sensitive?”
Yukinoshita stared straight at Hikigaya’s eyes, and the next second, she smiled and pointed her slender finger at his eyes. “Hikigaya-kun, I don’t know if you’ve noticed, but you have a habit. When normal people lie, their eyes will subconsciously avoid looking at others, but you’re different. When you lie, you always make a habit of maintaining eye contact.”
The room suddenly fell silent.
After a long while, Hikigaya finally broke the silence, asking uncertainly, “R-really?”
“Nope~ I was just lying to you. I didn’t expect Hikigaya-kun to fall for it so easily. Hehe!”
Yukinoshita laughed mischievously and took a sip of her coffee, but no one noticed that when she lowered her head, a shadow flickered in her eyes.
“…”
“Actually, it wasn’t really a lie. I just felt that some things couldn’t be said at that time,” Hikigaya, no longer bothering with the truth behind Yukinoshita’s words, spoke frankly.
“It’s about the true nature of the student council, right?”
Just as Hikigaya was about to pick up his coffee, his right hand froze. He unexpectedly looked up at Yukinoshita and nodded. “Something like that. The student council president kept emphasizing the school’s right and mission to change the rules and order, but everyone who participated in the interview should know very well that we all joined the student council with the idea of investing in the future.”
