chapter 111
Chapter 36, Class Break
Mu En walked along the familiar sycamore path, making his way back to his dormitory.
In just a few days, the dorm building that had been destroyed during the battle had already returned to its original state; there wasn’t a single trace of the fight, and even new patterns had been pasted on the building’s tiles.
It was a pink little pig, quite cute.
Sighing that magic really can do anything, Mu En walked into the dorm building.
The dormitory matron sat in her usual small room by the door, filing her nails. Upon seeing Mu En, she called out to him.
“Hey, hey, that kid, Mu En.”
“Mm?”
Mu En turned his head, flashing his usual sunny smile:
“Is there something you need, teacher?”
“Your dorm key.”
The matron’s cheeks flushed slightly as she handed Mu En a key.
“Your dorm was destroyed before, so the door and everything have been replaced with new ones, and this key is new too.”
“Oh, thank you.”
Mu En expressed his gratitude, but noticed the matron’s face reddened even more. After a moment’s pause, she suddenly turned to Mu En, shyly saying:
“Mu En, you were… really handsome back then!”
“……”
Mu En was speechless.
This was truly absurd.
He had tried to look cool, but instead of charming the cute girls, it seemed to have attracted a bunch of middle-aged women and male admirers.
Had he unconsciously misdirected his charm?
With a helpless shake of his head, Mu En ignored the matron’s bashful face and quickly headed upstairs.
The dorm that had been wrecked by those muscular brothers had returned to its original state, even the daily necessities were arranged back in their places.
For someone like Mu En, who came from a well-off family, valuable items were usually kept in his personal storage, so he wasn’t worried about the repairmen causing any awkward situations like the one with Ryan before.
After surveying the room and confirming that everything was in order, Mu En walked into the bathroom and took a shower first, washing away the lingering smell of medicine he had brought from the hospital.
Then, feeling refreshed, he dove into his studies.
After being introduced to the material by the senior, even without a teacher, Mu En could still manage some level of review and preview.
After all, what Ms. Meila required was not just to catch up with the pace but also to pass.
The upcoming exam on the basics of magic in a month would mostly cover second-year content.
However, thanks to the senior’s explanations, Mu En understood that the basics of magic were indeed a highly progressive subject.
If he didn’t grasp the earlier concepts thoroughly, he would be completely lost later on.
So, Mu En’s most important task now was to quickly tackle all the first-year content.
During this process, he could pause his studies in other areas, including the nightly battles in the dark book.
For this month, everything had to make way for this one subject.
……
The next day.
Without giving Mu En much time to rest, the academy’s classes had already begun.
The first class was the martial arts class that Mu En was familiar with.
However, before the martial arts class started, Mu En found Teacher Kaide.
“Are you applying for a temporary leave from class?”
Kaide looked at Mu En, somewhat surprised.
As a magic academy, St. Maria Academy naturally offered more than just tedious theoretical courses and rigid professors; there were also many practical classes and research activities in clubs.
Due to the long duration of these courses, they often clashed with regular classes, which led to the establishment of a leave system.
Students could apply to the responsible teacher for a leave of absence; as long as the reason was valid and the teacher agreed, they could temporarily skip the class without losing credits.
Of course, they still had to take the exams.
However, since practical classes and research activities were generally conducted in the upper grades, Teacher Kaide rarely encountered a second-year student applying for a leave of absence.
Especially when the applicant was Mu En, who had never taken his previous classes seriously.
He couldn’t shake the feeling that the motivation was a bit impure.
This kid wouldn’t be thinking of skipping class to chase girls, would he?
Thinking of this, the still-single Teacher Kaide’s gaze suddenly sharpened:
“So what’s your reason?”
“Um, well…”
Mu En scratched his head, giving an awkward smile:
“You know, Teacher Kaide, I only scored three points on the Magic Fundamentals exam last semester, right?”
“I know, that incident has become a legend among the teachers, alongside your other classmate who learned the illumination spell in just one year, both being the two great wonders of the education world.”
What on earth are these two great wonders? Can this really become a campus ghost story?
Mu En scoffed and continued:
“…So, I just want to temporarily focus on learning the basics of magic, and I want to catch up on that class first.”
“In other words…”
Teacher Kaide’s gaze sharpened, and he said sternly:
“You want to abandon the path of a warrior for magic?”
“Eh? No, I just…”
“That’s not acceptable, Mu En Campbell!”
Before Mu En could explain, Teacher Kaide slapped his hand on Mu En’s shoulder, his eyes wide with intensity, and exclaimed:
“I’ve seen too many people like you. Just because you faced a little hardship in martial arts, you want to run off to learn magic, which is relatively sweat-free. In the end, you won’t master magic, and your martial arts will be neglected, turning you into a useless waste who can do nothing but go home to inherit family wealth. Mu En Campbell, do you want to become that kind of person?”
“No, no, no, I haven’t given up on martial arts. I just have to make up for the introductory course on magic for some reason.”
Mu En rubbed his shoulder, which had been slapped painfully, and smiled wryly:
“And besides, Teacher Cade saw it too, right? My strength in martial arts is already among the top in the second year. Not studying for a while shouldn’t have much impact.”
“It’s precisely because of your talent in martial arts that you can’t give up!”
Teacher Cade seemed to be convinced that Mu En wanted to abandon the path of a martial artist. He shook Mu En’s shoulder and said with a pained expression:
“Look at you! You only trained with Duke Campbell for two months during the break and have made such great progress. As long as you continue to walk this path seriously, I can’t guarantee how great your achievements will be in the future, but at least the future is promising!
And think about your magic level; scoring three points in the introductory magic course—can just anyone achieve that? My three-year-old niece could probably draw better and score higher! So, your mind, it’s just not cut out for learning magic!”
“…”
Mu En’s mouth twitched.
Although he knew Teacher Cade was trying to help, he couldn’t shake the feeling that hearing those words made his heart ache.
But, anyway.
“Teacher Cade, although you have a point, I might indeed not be cut out for learning magic.”
Mu En sighed, grabbed Cade’s hand, removed it from his shoulder, and then stared into his eyes, speaking with utmost seriousness:
“But—
I have my own reasons. For the next month, I must devote all my energy to the introductory magic course.
So, whether you agree or not, I won’t be attending martial arts classes for the time being.”
“As for credits, if the Campbell family is willing to donate a bit more to the school, I think Dean Pink Bear would be more than happy to grant me a few.”
……
PS: I have something going on today, so as usual, I’ll make it up with a big chapter tomorrow.
