Chapter 420: Void-Tier Asset
Lola hovered in the air with her body donned in a dinosaur-like mascot suit, her face sticking out of its mouth. Seeing all gaze gather on her, she asked, "So, whose going to help me?"
"Wait, you can fly now?" Ava asked in disbelief, knowing that the latter's prowess was just too unexplainably overpowered.
"I have been able to fly for a while now. Since I knew how jealous you can get, I decided not to use it in front of you to spare your feelings," Lola answered with an innocent grin.
Yep, Lola hated Ava's guts and vice versa. It all began when Ava repeatedly declared Ace as hers to her mother during their training, and Lola commented that she should forget it, as she wasn't Ace's type, borrowing Ace's famous words to reject Ava in front of their whole school. It began as a small disagreement, but now it has spiralled into a bitter feud.
"So, what? I can not only fly but teleport too," Ava informed proudly, only to hear Lola counter, saying, "Oh, yeah! I have an entire world of my own."
"Stop it, you two," Layla hurriedly got between the two as their team captain.
Each year, based on the number of trainees recruited, the C.I.B. likes to divide its trainees into permanent teams of 3-5 members until the end of their training period, and have them compete with each other while they were competing with their teammembers for the top trainee position as a test to examine the trainees' leadership, teamwork, loyalty, and other qualities to ensure that they were C.I.B. material before hiring them as official agents that represented them.
Each team gets assigned an individual senior agent as their mentor, who not only trains and guides them but also evaluates the team and individual members.
This year, due to the circumstances surrounding her job and with her daughter joining the program, EAD Matthews volunteered to mentor a team of special trainees that included her daughter Ava, field agent Layla, innate curse master Lola, undead curse slave Sonia, and the new hire, nepobaby Lyra Lander, who only got to be part of this training because of Matthew's understanding with the latter's brother.
Considering the members of Matthews' special team and their history, it was obvious that Layla was the most fit to lead them. With Layla's experience in the field even before she became curse slave and her loyalty lying with her, nobody in the special team could think that they were more deserving to led the team than Layla, Sonia included. After all, only these two had experience with the curse world unlike their other three teammates who just learned about the 'World of Curses.'
"Ma'am, Lola's idea could work," Layla said, turning to face EAD Matthews after seeing Ava and Lola had settled down. Having trained with Lola, Layla was fully aware of the latter's abilities and the unexplainable miracles they were capable of. Therefore, she immediately advised her superior to consider Lola's offer.
"No, it is too risky. One wrong move and she might get killed. One Innate curse master is worth more than this entire county, let alone this shabby town," Agent Sugarmite immediately rejected sparing EAD Matthews the trouble of using harsh and heartless words before her daughter. This was their first operation together, so she decided to be mean realist, that everyone hates for having the guts to speak what everyone was thinking and were too much of a coward to speak up, so that Matthews didn't have to.
No matter how harsh and cruel Sugarmite's words sounded, everyone present, at least the adults, knew that they were true, as no matter how many resources and time you invest in the best curse master out there, one cannot guarantee that they will advance to the Void-tier. However, it was possible if it were an innate curse master. Especially someone with Lola's solid foundation with not one but two curse cores.
As long as she did not die midway, Lola was a future Void-tier curse master. In terms of value and priority, she outweighed the entire town, including the agents evacuating the townspeople. This obviously meant that Lola was worth more than capturing this group of curse terrorists. Meaning, Matthews couldn't justify risking Lola's life over this trivial matter to her higher-ups.
"Maybe, she doesn't have to take any risk. Just presence alone might make the difference," Janice exclaimed and immediately explained, "Lola's passive curse energy burning effect, I believe that it should be able to go around the life-steal curse spell on the curse terrorists, allowing us to capture them alive without going through much trouble."
"That could work," I nodded, knowing that the life-steal curse spell only activates if the user was hurt physically, and Lola's curse energy burning effect did not hurt one physically but burnt their curse energy until they were out of curse energy and finally their curse core was reduced to cinders not to forget how painful it would. That was to say that as long as the curse terrorists were inflicted by Lola's fire-breathing attack, it was game over for them. Unless they had curse abilities and mental fortitude similar to Sonia, whose undying body and pain tolerance were simply off the charts. This chapter is from the collection at M-VL-EM-PYR.
"Yes, shall we get started?" Delores agreed and eagerly asked to commence their attack because she wanted to put an end to whatever the curse caster was up to, hiding in the veil of his friends' fused curse dominion.
"There are four of us and four of them, while we engage them, Delores will use her speed to help Lola infect the curse terrorists with her curse ability. If possible, target the curse caster first. The sooner we have him in the curse suppression cuffs, the better. But remember, her life is more important than this operation or any one of us. So, don't hesitate to abort the operation if things go south, got it?" EAD Matthews went over the plan, eyeing the two sky-tier agents from the C.I.B., Evil Eyes, and Delores. She was extra stern as she spoke the last few words.
