Chapter 17: What In The World
Within the wooden-walled cottage, the fire crackled softly in the stone hearth, casting a warm glow across the room.
"Argh…"
"Mmh…"
Two pained moans sounded, coming from the two figures hanging from the rafters with their hands tied above their heads and clothes stained with blood.
With fearful gazes, they looked up at the white-haired figures, who were laughing and drinking around a table in the center of the cottage.
"N-Norman…"
A whimper sounded from the mouth of a woman—she looked at her husband with eyes full of terror.
She was a noblewoman herself—under the Emperor of Whitesky stood the twenty lesser families of the kingdom, and her husband was the head of one of the subsidiary families.
The subsidiary families stood under the twenty lesser families.
With the guards of their families, they headed to Kornacis for a meeting with the head of the Uran family, whom they were a subsidiary family of.
"I-It will be alright, Ellie… I-I can make a deal with them…"
Norman said to his wife, but even he didn't believe his own words, as he knew that mere money wouldn't do anything to help them.
Rav'akari weren't interested in money—they cared about killing, women, and power.
Thus, for a moment, Norman thought about just giving his wife over to them so he could escape, but they already had her in their clutches, so there was no need for them to do any kind of deal with him.
The rope around their hands was digging into their flesh, cutting off the circulation, and making both of them quite light-headed.
"Shall we finally have some fun?"
Rav'akari said, turned his gaze over to the two frightened nobles, and smiled wickedly—the eyes of five other men glinting with cruel excitement alongside his.
"Eek!"
Ellie's face paled in terror—she'd been a very sheltered girl, so she never encountered the true evil of the world—and now she had.
She couldn't help it and just broke down in tears.
Knock! Thump!
At that moment, someone knocked on the door, but immediately after, it sounded like something crashed into the wooden door of the cottage.
With a frown on their faces, the Rav'akari turned to the door, and then, it opened—a black charred body collapsed on the doorstep, still smoking like a torch dipped in oil.
One of the Rav'akari crouched next to the charred body, turned it over, and looked into its eyes—they were closed shut since the eyelids were burned shut.
"Noc?"
He said in surprise.
"What, Noc? Are you sure?"
They all came close to the charred body, looked into its face, and while the flesh was mostly all melted away, they could tell who it was.
It was indeed Noc who drew a short stick and was in the scouting role—he was on the main road to see whether the Guild had come.
"The Guild did this?"
"They came quicker than expected."

"Well, we've had our fun here—let's start heading back home."
Rav'akari picked up the charred body, tossed it over to his shoulder, and walked out of the cottage, then tossed the body on the back of a horse.
"What about them?"
One of them asked as he looked over to the two nobles—they hadn't done anything to them yet—and none of them were satisfied.
"We'll bring them over to the home, and there we will have some fun with them. I am sure our beloved Deceptive Innocence will be pleased with our offering of fresh entertainment."
The two nobles wept—they just prayed for quick death at this point—but it was clear that their Gods weren't with them today.
…
The light of the morning shone over from the horizon, and Rask's streets started to brighten up.
The street lamps slowly turned off one after another—the city's caretakers blew out the flames—and the city was finally awake.
Rolling through the main street of Rask—also known as Guild Street—a wagon pulled by a single horse made its way through the cobblestone streets.
Kael sat on the back of the horse, a thin-brimmed hat on his head, which he found from the ditched carriage.
He looked behind at the ropes that pulled the wagon behind and let out a slight sigh.
After burning the Rav'akari to oblivion, he took his horse, and with its help, he was able to ease his journey over to Rask.
It was already morning, so he doubted that with just pushing that he would've made it here in time.
At that moment, he yanked on the reins, and the wagon rolled to a stop in the doorsteps of a black brick building.
It had a gloomy vibe with murky windows and cobwebs hanging from the eaves—in the back alleyway, there were wagons with the smell of death wafting from over there.
[Corpse Collectors HQ]
A gray sign hung crookedly above the door, barely visible in the dim lighting.
When the pedestrian moved past Kael's wagon, they pinched their noses and quickened their pace, eager to get away from the putrid scent.
When they saw him right in front of the Corpse Collectors HQ with a smelly wagon in tow, they immediately assumed that he was part of them.
Thus, he received some weird looks.
Kael hopped off the horse's back, moved the hair out of the way of his face, and stepped through the heavy metal doors.
Within the dimly lit building, there was a receptionist behind a large stone desk—it looked like something out of a medieval castle—and she didn't seem to notice Kael.
"Hello."
Kael tapped his finger on the stone table, and the receptionist looked up with a start—she smiled tiredly, and there was black mascara smudged under her eyes.
It looked like she had just recently woken up and was still waking up.
"Welcome to Corpse Collectors, how may I help you?"
She asked.
"I've brought y'all the victims of Ants Village slaughter. I am sure you've heard about that. I'd like you to take good care of them and bring them to their families."
Kael said, tipped his hat, and headed to the door.
"W-what? Wait!"
The receptionist stood up in a hurry, but the strange hat-wearing young man had already left, and she went outside to check the wagon.
She found the corpses under the tarp and immediately pinched her nose as the putrid smell assaulted her senses.
"W-what in the world?"
