Chapter 14: Phenomena of Guilty Conscience
The question hung in the air like a heavy cloud.
Seeing that Kael was quite taken aback by the question, Ansel interlaced his fingers and asked the same question once more.
"Did you force Kang Huang to kill himself?"
"I…"
Kael hesitated, shook his head, and rubbed the sides of his heads.
"I did not."
When the words left his lips, Ansel and Klaus turned to look at the starry-eyed woman—she looked troubled and was thinking.
"Hmm… Truthful, I believe."
She said.
"What do you mean, you believe?"
Ansel asked with a frown.
"I think he feels responsibility for what happened, but he wasn't forcing him, per se—it was all the doings of Kang Huang out of his own free will.
"The creature of Ravaged Soul does not happen if you force someone to kill himself—it's the same as killing him yourself that way."
Aurora said.
'Whew…'
Kael took a deep breath and thought:
'He worded it badly—I did not force him to kill himself; he had already decided on it and decided to do it himself.
'If he wanted to, he could've killed me instead, as I am not even the Blessed One, so to even think that I would've been able to force him is quite silly.
'If he had asked if I convinced him to do that, then my answer would've been filled with falsehood.'
Ansel nodded, stood up, and said:
"You're free to leave, Kael Mizuchi."
With that, Ansel left the room with Klaus, and Aurora waved her hand before also following them out of the room.
The most up-to-date version is on M(VLEMPY)R.
The heavy air in the room disappeared, and Kael noticed that his body stopped sweating and trembling.
'I was wondering why it was difficult to breathe—it must've been the doings of Ansel—he made the air heavy so I am more inclined to break down and tell the truth?
'I don't think he actually believed that I was the culprit, but it's just what he does to everyone they're interrogating.
'I should be free from any doubts.'
Kael stood up, left the room, and saw that there was his backpack on the couch—he picked it up, slung it over his shoulder, and left.
…
"…"
Ansel stood on the top floor, looking through the window towards the crimson moon, and the stars of constellations glimmered in the sky.
"What do you think, Klaus?"
He asked.
Klaus sat in the corner of the room, his long leg crossing over his other, his hand resting on his knee.
"I do not think he is fully innocent in what happened over there, but in the end, it also does not seem to matter.
"The creature of Ravaged Soul is also called the Phenomena of Guilty Conscience. We've heard about Kang Huang being the sole survivor of the Ants Village slaughter.
"There is no way that Kang Huang would be able to escape Rav'akari all by himself, and we questioned him—he lied through his teeth.
"We did not reveal to Kang Huang that we knew that his words were full of falsehood as we were preparing to push charges on him because we had enough reason to believe that he betrayed his party.
"In the end, him being Phenomena of Guilty Conscience was not surprising to us."
Klaus said.
"I agree."
Ansel said as he gazed through the window, then the door opened, and Aurora walked in, swinging her hips like a sensual siren.
"You're sure we shouldn't stop him? He is going to the Ants Village all by himself, and he will get himself killed."
She said with a worried look.
"Inform the Corpse Collectors that they might have another corpse on their hands soon."
Ansel said.
"Are you serious?"
Aurora asked with a frown.
"If he were the Blessed One, sure, we'd probably stop him, as it isn't worthwhile to lose one like that, but he isn't even one."
Klaus said.
"However, he can become one."
Aurora said.
"Unlikely—if what you said was true, it sounds like this Kael person is planning to return back to Earth after retrieving his brother's corpse.
"We can tell him not to go there, but he wouldn't listen, so what's the point? If he makes it back safely, the Guild doesn't need to pay for Corpse Collectors.
"Sounds like it is a win-win situation to me."
Ansel said.
"…You guys sure have lost the heart of humanity."
Aurora pouted, left the room, and slammed the door behind her.
…
Walking through the dark road, the only light being the crimson moon, Kael stored the black bottle of oil and box of matches back inside his backpack.
Since they were inside his pockets, they were luckily not seen by the investigators, but he doubted that it would even matter.
He stopped at the road, turned around, and saw the city in the distance—its lights sparkled in the night.
When he left the Guild, he went back to the Pouring Foam Inn, returned the pendulum as he didn't want Mystic to come after him for stealing it, and then left the city without further ado.
It took all of his money to purchase the location spell, so he didn't have money to pay for carriage, and he doubted anyone would even take him to the Ants Village.
It was a dangerous place, and it was in the middle of the night.
"I still have time…"
Kael walked down the road, the pebbles under his shoes, and the wind howling through the trees.
Having lived his entire life in the city, this was his first time trekking through the wild—it was amazing—just like his brother said.
'Soul told me that he just loved walking through the wild, camping under the stars, and being one with nature.
'I see the appeal.'
Kael thought, stopped walking, and looked up to the sky—the crimson moon was so visible that it almost felt like he could reach out and touch it.
This world had no pollution so the stars shone brightly, illuminating the night like a painting come to life.
His feet started moving again, and he looked ahead—down the road—and gulped as the further he walked, the closer he got to the danger that awaited him.
