The early morning mist rolled over the rooftops of Loguetown as Rael and Kaya prepared their ship quietly. The sails were folded, the supplies were already loaded, and the ocean wind carried an odd stillness. Too quiet. Rael felt it.
Kaya secured a rope near the helm. "Everything's ready. We can leave now."
Rael glanced at the harbor's exit. "Something's wrong."
Before Kaya could ask, a whistling sound tore through the air. Rael grabbed Kaya and dove just as an explosive shell slammed into the dock behind them, splintering wood and tossing crates into the sea.
Smoke.
Movement.
Shadows leapt from rooftops and alleyways. Clad in black. Cipher Pol.
"Target confirmed. Engage," a cold voice said from behind a white mask.
Rael stood, brushing splinters off his coat. His golden eyes narrowed. "So much for letting me go."
The first wave came fast—three agents armed with haki-infused blades. Rael sidestepped the first and caught the second by the arm, twisting it until the bone cracked. He used the man's momentum to hurl him into the third.
Kaya pulled her pistol, taking cover and firing at an agent on the rooftop who had leveled a rifle. The bullet struck his shoulder, sending him tumbling.
From the smoke, a new figure emerged.
Tall. Clad in a reinforced Cipher Pol combat suit. His hair was tied back, and a brutal scar ran down the side of his neck. His aura felt different. Refined. Dangerous.
"Project Helix," someone whispered.
Rael eyed him. "So you're the special dog they sent."
Helix didn't speak. He raised a hand and a ripple of force tore the air—not a Devil Fruit, but something else. Artificial.
The shockwave hit Rael and sent him sliding backward across the dock.
Rael grinned. "That's new."
Helix charged, blades unsheathing from his gauntlets.
Their clash shook the pier. Sparks flew with each exchange. Rael blocked a slash and countered with a brutal elbow that cracked Helix's mask. But the man didn't fall. He spun and slashed Rael across the ribs, leaving a long cut.
Kaya shouted from behind cover, "Rael!"
"I'm fine! Stay low!"
Helix activated something on his wrist. His body emitted steam, and his movements suddenly doubled in speed. He struck Rael three times before the latter could react.
Blood splattered the boards.
But then—
Rael's eyes gleamed. Not in fear.
In excitement.
"Finally," he whispered. "Someone worth hitting."
With a roar, he unleashed his full aura. The dock cracked beneath him as he drove a punch into Helix's chest, sending him flying through two buildings before crashing into a storage warehouse.
The other agents hesitated.
Rael stood straight, blood running down his side. "Next?"
The remaining Cipher Pol retreated.
Kaya rushed to him, helping him stand.
"That was close," she said, voice shaking.
Rael nodded, wincing. "They wanted to see how far I could go."
Kaya looked at the flaming remnants of the dock. "What now?"
"We leave," he said. "Now."
In the shadows of Loguetown, a figure cloaked in black picked up a small wooden box. He opened it to reveal the Devil Fruit.
Still untouched.
He frowned. "He didn't take the bait."
Another voice behind him said, "Then next time, we make sure he does."
From a Den Den Mushi, a voice from Cipher Pol headquarters crackled, "Helix compromised. Subject Rael exceeds current thresholds. Authorize bounty increase. Two hundred million. Global alert."
As Rael and Kaya's ship left the harbor, Kaya leaned on the rail, gazing at the smoke behind them.
"They're not going to stop, are they?"
Rael shook his head. "No. But neither will we."
