Night fell over Loguetown with a quiet stillness that didn't match the chaos earlier that day. The streets had returned to normal, or at least pretended to. Beneath the surface, the city was holding its breath. The name "Rael" had spread like wildfire—from taverns to alleys, whispered by bounty hunters, merchants, and marines alike.
Rael sat alone at the edge of the harbor wall, feet hanging just above the dark waters. The stars reflected dimly across the waves, and the salty breeze tousled his silver-streaked black hair. His coat, torn from the earlier fight, now hung beside him. There was a cut on his cheek he hadn't bothered to treat.
Behind him, footsteps.
"You disappeared again," Kaya said, approaching with a fresh coat draped over her arm.
He didn't turn, just let her settle beside him. She offered the coat, and he slipped it on wordlessly.
"You saved that dock today," she added. "But I know that look. You're waiting for something."
"No," he murmured. "I'm listening. The world's gotten loud again."
Kaya tilted her head. "What do you mean?"
Rael looked toward the sea. "I'm being watched."
Inside a candle-lit room deep within Loguetown, five individuals sat around a square table, all dressed in black suits, each face concealed behind white masks. Cipher Pol.
"We underestimated him," one said. "We should have acted when he was alone."
"You saw what happened to Garent," another hissed. "Attacking him directly is foolish."
The lead agent adjusted his gloves. "Not an attack. An assessment. We have no record of this man's origin, no Devil Fruit ability logged, yet he can break steel, shatter haki, and evade advanced observation techniques."
"What's the order, then?"
"Observation for now. Containment if possible. If not… release Project Helix."
Silence. A long pause.
"Helix isn't ready."
"Then make him ready."
Morning arrived too fast.
Rael and Kaya walked through the marketplace again, but this time, there was no aimless browsing. Rael's instincts were sharp—too sharp. He could feel trained eyes on him, the kind that didn't belong to drunk pirates or petty thieves. Something colder. Government.
Kaya tried to distract him. She pointed to a tall vendor stall selling rare weapons. "That saber looks nice. You could trade the one you got from that Revolutionary."
Rael didn't respond. His eyes scanned the rooftops, the windows, the shadows.
"Rael," she said, her voice soft. "They're watching. I know. But don't push them."
"I'm not pushing," he said. "I'm preparing."
At the same time, in a back alley behind the marketplace, a slim man in a dark red cloak opened a case full of items covered in velvet cloth. A single object glowed faintly beneath the cloth.
A Devil Fruit.
"This is the one," he whispered to his contact. "He won't be able to resist. And when he eats it... we'll see what kind of monster he really becomes."
A shadowed Cipher Pol agent nodded once and vanished.
Back at their small inn, Rael stood by the window again, arms folded.
Kaya set a cup of tea on the table beside him. "You think they'll act tonight?"
"Maybe," he said.
"Then let's not be here."
Rael looked at her.
"Let's leave Loguetown," Kaya said. "Go before they decide you're worth caging. You said it yourself: freedom. It starts by choosing when to walk away."
Rael exhaled through his nose. He hated running. But she had a point.
"We'll leave at first light," he said.
Kaya smiled faintly. "Good. Then tonight, we rest. Tomorrow, we run."
Far above the city, on the rooftop of a watchtower, a Cipher Pol sniper watched them through his scope.
"Subject Rael is preparing to leave Loguetown. He suspects observation but has not retaliated. Orders?"
The Den Den Mushi on the floor squawked: "Let him go. We have what we need."
The sniper paused.
"Understood."
As the sun began to set, a wind blew through Loguetown—not just a sea breeze, but a whisper that something bigger was coming.
The calm before the storm.
