Chapter 8: Chapter 8: The Dawn Of Servitude
The second morning snow fell thicker than the first.
Harthvale's rooftops disappeared under a blanket of white, and frost clung to every branch like crystal veins. Despite the cold, the village square pulsed with energy. Not from divine warmth, nor magical embers-but from the steady rhythm of machinery.
The Loyalty Altar stood at the heart of the square now-taller and broader than before, its core humming with soft, resonant light. Thin streams of energy pulsed outward from its base, forming faint geometric patterns in the air-hexagonal diagrams of loyalty, structure, and servitude.
Villagers gathered around the loyalty altar this time not to pray, but to listen.
Leonhart stood before them, not on a pedestal, not behind an altar but among them, signifying that he too was the same as them. His white coat dusted with snow, his expression as still as cold, hard steel.
"I am not a god," he said plainly, voice carrying through the crisp morning air. "And I will not ask you to worship me."
Silence followed. Dozens of villagers watched, eyes wide, breath misting in the cold.
"I stand before you here to offer you something greater than blind devotion. I offer you purpose."

Behind Leonhart, the Iron Saint stood like a black tower. Beside him, Rett Corven remained still in his Vanguard armour, silent but vigilant. On the edges of the crowd, mechanical infantry stood motionless like statues but always ready for dangers unseen-watchful guardians of a kingdom yet to be reborn.
Leonhart's voice deepened, filled with quiet conviction.
"You've lived in fear and hope of gods who do not answer your calls. You've offered prayers in hunger, in pain, and in grief-while those above offered only silence. I will not offer you miracles."
He stepped forward.
"I offer you protection. Order. A future."
Murmurs rippled throughout the villagers. Some bowed their heads not out of worship, but in respect. A few stepped forward and touched the base of the altar, a silent gesture of acknowledgement.
The Loyalty Altar flared.

Later that day, inside the barn that served as Leonhart's forge and command chamber, the console glowed with a dull, amber light. The Faith Deconstruction Tree rotated slowly in holographic projection—nodes now fully branching into Tier II, and on the cusp of something far greater.
The room smelled of hot oil, steel, and incense harvested from repurposed faith relics.
Rett leaned over the map projection, brows furrowed.
"Three villages to the east have priests," he muttered. "Old ones. Not combatants. But they control something far greater. Influence."
Leonhart nodded slowly.
"And Windmere Hills has a shrine," he said. "An active one. Maintained by one of the minor Solvane chaplains."
"Should we dismantle it?" Rett asked.
Leonhart shook his head.
"No. We convert it."
Rett blinked. "Convert it?"
"We allow the people to keep the shell. But we change the core."
He expanded the map with a swipe of his mechanical fingers, marking a spiral pattern around the region.
"They will kneel in the same direction they have done so far. But it will be my voice that they will hear. My strength they will feel."
He tapped a command.

That evening, Nara approached Leonhart at the altar.
The young mage looked tired but determined, her copper-ringed staff clutched in both hands. She had spent hours studying diagrams, watching the machines and learning their patterns.
"I don't feel... divine, like the church says," she said hesitantly.
"You won't," Leonhart said without turning. "You're useful without it."
She blinked. "That's it?"
"Do you want to change the world, Nara?"
She nodded.
"Then your feelings are secondary," Leonhart said coldly. "Purpose outweighs doubt. Progress demands patience. Begin your synchronisation. By tomorrow, you'll be the first of your kind."
[Servo-Arcanist Integration Protocol: Initiated]
[Subject: Nara Alen, Tier I Mage]

She exhaled slowly. "Will it hurt?"
"It might," Leonhart said. "But you'll survive."
She paused then, with a resolute expression she said while looking at Leonhart.
"I'll do it anyway."
That night, as snow fell heavier and the winds howled, Leonhart stood alone before the altar.
His breath fogged in the cold. The flickering lights of the village cast dancing shadows across his face. Every line of his coat was rigid. His eyes were distant, but awake.
The Sovereign Protocol spoke silently to him, threads of data unfurling behind his eyes like constellations.

He closed his eyes.
He could feel it now. Not just numbers. Weight.
Not fear. Not love. Something in between.
It was faith, but not directed at a myth.
It was belief in his actions. In his will.
And the Sovereign Protocol drank it in like oxygen.
Hours later, screams rang out.
The chamber was lit with sterile blue light. It was Nara inside hooked up to all kinds of contraptions. Her body convulsed on the augmentation table as nanothreads etched glowing symbols into her spine. Her copper ring was now fused with a data module, turning her staff into a semblance of a relay hub.
Leonhart stood over her watching the ongoing process, his arms folded, silent.
Rett gritted his teeth beside him. "Are you sure this procedure is safe, lord?"
Even though he portrayed a cold and stoic aura due to the augmentations and knowledge provided by the sovereign protocol, his heart remained soft for the children he swore to protect.
"No," Leonhart said. "But without taking risks there can't be any progress. Evolution demands sacrifice and endurance. This was her choice, and thus she has to go through this trial to achieve her desires." Faint screams and cries rang out throughout the night.
By morning, Nara was reborn like a caterpillar that has moulted into a beautiful butterfly.
She stood on shaky legs, the irises of her eyes now bright with glowing circuitry. Her voice trembled with static as she whispered the first successful mana-infused mechanical incantation.
"Unit... ready, lord" she said.
[New Unit Created: Servo-Arcanist – Nara Alen]
[Designation: Mage/Support Hybrid]
[Abilities Unlocked: Kinetic Anchor | Mana Thread Uplink | Prayer Denial Field]

[New unit that serves as a bridge between magic and machinery, allowing for spellcasting through mechanical matrices. Units are converted mages who undergo augmentation to enhance their casting capabilities, loyalty, and mana efficiency.]
Leonhart smiled, just slightly.
"The dawn has come," he said softly.
That afternoon, the Dominion Relay Node was activated as the system screen lit up with information.
[Dominion Relay Node: An obelisk-like broadcast tower constructed using converted divine relics and Sovereign-core technology. It repurposes ambient divine resonance in the region, subtly replacing it with Servitude Frequency, a system-generated form of pseudo-faith tethered to the Sovereign.
Radius of Influence: 5-10 km (based on terrain and altitude).
Servitude Frequency: Replaces divine emotional tethers with loyalty-based systems. Does not cancel worship-redirects emotional energy toward the Sovereign Protocol.
Corrupts Shrines Passively: Corrupts nearby minor shrines to slowly begin to lose connection to the gods and can be repurposed.
Pantheon Alert Threshold: Low, unless multiple nodes exist in proximity.
This node is the foundation for soft conquest-turning hearts before turning swords. Useful for long-term control and breaking down divine influence without bloodshed.]
Positioned atop the western hill, the tall, obsidian spire pulsed once every ten seconds. It resembled a watchtower-but its purpose far more insidious.
[Signal Broadcast Initiated.]

Arel Thorne approached the barn near dusk, cloak wrapped tightly around his shoulders. He found Leonhart sitting before the forge—not forging, not calculating-just staring into the flame.
"A lot has changed since you arrived at this village," Arel said, standing beside Leonhart.
Leonhart didn't respond.
"People are working harder now. They smile more often. They say your machine creations make them feel safe."
Leonhart nodded slowly. "Safety is the first step toward loyalty."
"And after loyalty?"
"Control."
Arel hesitated, then stepped closer. "You're not a cruel man, Leonhart. I've seen your eyes."
Leonhart finally looked up. "Cruelty is not necessary."
"Then what is?"
"Clarity."

Leonhart stood again, brushing ash from his coat.
Tomorrow, he would touch divinity-not with reverence, but with calculation and precision.
The age of miracles was now coming to an end.
And in its place, a machine revolution was rising.
