Chapter 23: Chapter 23: Introduction to Haki Training
The morning sun filled the Marineford courtyard, and the cool sea breeze carried the unique salty scent of the sea. Roy stood in the center of the courtyard, arms crossed, his expression focused as he looked at the two people before him—Bell-mère and Ace.
Not far away, Luffy was chasing a butterfly, shouting "Waahhh," and occasionally getting tricked by the butterfly into rolling around on the grass.
"Haki is just a general term for a type of power." Roy raised his right hand, and black Armament Haki flowed over his entire arm like water, giving off a faint metallic sheen in the sunlight.
Bell-mère had a cigarette in her mouth, her pupils slightly constricted. "So this is... Armament Haki?"
Ace's eyes shone, and he clenched his fists. "So cool! I want to learn too!"
Roy nodded slightly. "There are three types of Haki—Armament, Observation, and Conqueror's." As he spoke, he casually picked up a stone and tossed it into the air, then met it with his Armament-coated arm—"CRACK!"—the stone shattered like a brittle cookie, but his black arm didn't move an inch.
"Armament hardening is the most basic application, but when you master it, you can even catch cannonballs with your bare hands." Roy shook his arm, his gaze calm. "And, in the Grand Line, Armament Haki is the most important weapon against Devil Fruit users."
A glint appeared in Bell-mère's eyes. She bit her cigarette and murmured, "The legendary Devil Fruit users... can also be suppressed?"
Roy smiled. "In the second half of the Grand Line, that's just common knowledge." (The information in the East Blue is still too limited...)
"Observation Haki allows you to sense the presence and sounds around you, and even predict your opponent's attack trajectory." As he spoke, he closed his eyes, as if entering a state of meditation. "Try it. Close your eyes. Don't rely on your eyes and ears, but sense the 'presence' around you."
Ace clenched his fists tightly, trying to calm himself.
Roy said lightly, "Concentrate. Feel the flow of the wind, the breathing of people, every pulse of life."
A few seconds later—"Ugh—" Ace had a frustrated look on his face. "Damn it! Why can't I feel anything?!"
Roy walked over to him and gently tapped his forehead with his finger. "Because you are too impatient in your heart. When your mind is calm, you can naturally sense the presence."
Ace was stunned. He slowly closed his eyes, his breathing gradually steadying. Just then, footsteps sounded from the back door of the courtyard—"Thump!" Ace's eyes shot open, his gaze precisely locking onto the direction of the door. The door was pushed open, and Nojiko poked her head in, looking at the three of them.
Roy smiled and nodded. "Not bad, Ace. Observation Haki doesn't require strength, but a calm heart."
Bell-mère looked at Roy thoughtfully. "So, Haki training is not just about physical strength, but also about cultivating the mind?"
Roy said seriously, "That's right. To become a true master, your mind must be calm, and your fists must be steady."
At this moment, Luffy suddenly pounced over. "I want to learn this skill of sensing presence too!"
Ace pressed a hand on his head. "Wait until you stop running all over the place."
Nami and Nojiko were趴 on the nearby windowsill, watching Roy's teaching scene with envy.
Ace suddenly raised his hand. "What about Conqueror's Haki?"
Roy glanced at him, his tone calm. "That is a talent possessed by a very small number of people. Only one in a million has it."
Ace lowered his head in thought after hearing this, but his fists clenched even tighter.
"Now, first try to feel the power within your body." Roy's voice was low and steady. "Imagine your blood boiling, your muscles contracting. That power—it has always been hidden deep within your body, you just haven't truly summoned it."
Bell-mère sat cross-legged in a corner of the training ground, an unlit cigarette in her mouth, her brow furrowed. "The power within my body..." she murmured to herself, closing her eyes. The cigarette trembled slightly, as if moving with the rhythm of her breathing. She began to try the method Roy had described—guiding, compressing, awakening.
After a moment, a faint, mist-like shadow appeared on the surface of her arms, and she could vaguely feel some kind of power stirring. "Ugh..." The power suddenly became chaotic, and the pattern shattered and dissipated like a newly formed mirror of water blown by the wind. Bell-mère's eyes shot open, a hint of astonishment and unwillingness in them. "Was that...?!"
"You got a feel for it on your first try..." Roy took two steps closer, his gaze falling on the fleeting black shadow on her arm. He nodded lightly. "Although it didn't take shape, you're on the right track."
"Many people don't feel anything for a week, but you got a response from your presence on your first try. That's already excellent."
Bell-mère gritted her teeth, her gaze darkening. She said in a low voice, "That feeling... it was like something was roaring in my bones. I almost caught it, but it slipped through my fingers."
Roy smiled, a new warmth of affirmation in his eyes. "You've already found the door. Next, it's up to you to see if you can tame it."
Bell-mère glanced at him, a defiant curve on her lips. "There's nothing in my life I can't tame."
Ace watched from the side, his eyes shining with envy as he came over. "I want to learn too! I want Haki too!"
"Don't be impatient." Roy placed a hand on his head and ruffled it with a smile. "Don't be impatient. First learn how to mobilize the power in your body, then learn how to use Haki."
Bell-mère stood up, looking at Roy's fists, a hint of resolve in her eyes. "As long as I have this ability, I can smash a pirate's head into a rotten watermelon even without a gun!"
Roy nodded slightly, his gaze steady. "A wise choice. But you also need to think carefully about whether to focus on martial arts, or try swordsmanship or..."
"I'll let my fists do the talking!" Bell-mère spat out her cigarette, her tone crisp and clear.
Ace gritted his teeth as he looked at her, a "I'm going to catch up to you" look on his face.
"Alright, that's enough for today." Roy smiled and withdrew his presence. "Bell-mère, I'll take you to the Headquarters training ground this afternoon. With the systematic training of the Marines, I believe you will achieve something..."
Bell-mère tugged at her sleeve and grinned. "Alright, let me show you what the ruthlessness of an East Blue woman is like!"
As she spoke—
"I want to learn too!" Luffy leaped onto Roy's back, his eyes shining. "Teach me! Teach me!"
Roy helplessly picked Luffy up. "When you're a little older."
Luffy pouted angrily. "Not fair! Even Ace gets to learn!"
Ace proudly raised his chin, his hands on his hips. "That's because I'm older than you!"
Nami jumped down from the windowsill with a "thud," her little hands on her hips. "I want to learn too!"
Nojiko ran out, stumbling, her expression as serious as a little adult's. "I-I want to too!"
Roy looked at the group of little kids that had suddenly surrounded him and rubbed his forehead in complete exasperation. "Old Man Garp... you really left me a good job..."
In the afternoon, Bell-mère changed into a smart Marine uniform, her entire presence changing. Roy handed her a file, his expression calm and serious. "The Headquarters training camp has systematic Haki courses, an elite camp personally supervised by Head Instructor Zephyr."
Bell-mère took the file, a hint of confusion in her eyes as she looked up. "Roy, why did you choose me?"
Roy's gaze fell on the group of children chasing each other in the courtyard, his voice low and firm. "Because we need more... people like you."
He turned and walked towards the gate, his back steady. "Let's go. Let 'Black Arm' Zephyr see the weight of an East Blue fist."
Bell-mère was slightly taken aback, then a confident smile appeared on her face as she strode after him. "Alright, let's show him."
Just then, a familiar little head poked over the wall. Ace was holding onto the wall with both hands, his eyes shining. "Wait for me! I want to go too!"
Roy turned and smiled helplessly, but a hint of softness flashed in his heart. "Since I've been given this chance, I want to try to completely change this world..."
"Perhaps, they can really hold up the banner of justice."
