Chapter 29: Chapter 28: Ava’s Field Trip
The hum of chatter filled the classroom as sunlight spilled through the windows. Ava sat near the window, drawing lazy doodles in the margins of her notebook while half-listening to her classmates ramble about snacks and anime.
The door slid open with a light click.
"Good morning, class!" said Ms. Hanami, stepping in with her usual bright energy and oversized coffee thermos. "Before we begin, I have an announcement."
The room quieted instantly.
"Next Saturday," she said, "we're having our annual Parents & Students Field Trip!"
Groans and cheers rippled across the class.
"It'll be a three-day, two-night vacation at Lake Hoshimori. Beautiful scenery, forest trails, bonfires—and yes, no pop quizzes." She winked. "You'll need to inform your guardians and confirm how many family members will be attending. Permission slips go out today. Be responsible."
Ava's hand shot up. "Can older brothers come?"
Ms. Hanami smiled. "Absolutely."
Ava practically bounced in her seat.
—
Back at home…
"Raven," Ava began sweetly.
"No."
"You didn't even let me finish!"
"You said my name like you were about to ask for something that involves… people, tents, or insects."
"Technically it involves all three." Ava grinned.
He raised an eyebrow. "No."
She huffed and turned to her next target.
"Sol?"
Sol looked up from the pile of tangled wires he was trying to understand. "Request denied."
Ava crossed her arms. "You guys are the worst."
Sol blinked. "You say that with affection or with offense?"
"Both," she muttered.
Raven sighed, rubbing his temples. "Is this about that school trip?"
"It's not just a trip. It's my first school trip. Real world. Real memories. Bonfires. Team games. They're letting family come. I want… you guys there."
Sol and Raven exchanged a glance.
It was quiet for a moment.
Then Raven stood. "Fine. We'll go."
Ava's eyes widened. "Wait, really?!"
Sol looked horrified. "Do we have to sleep outside?"
Raven shrugged. "Probably. But you'll survive. I'll bring bug spray."
Ava squealed and hugged them both, practically vibrating with excitement.
"WE NEED TO SHOP!"
—
The next day, they hit the town.
First stop: the outdoor gear store.
Sol stood staring at a tent display like it was a foreign artifact. "Why would humans choose to sleep in fabric tubes?"
Raven tossed a camping knife into their basket. "Because it builds character."
"I already have a class," Sol muttered.
Ava picked out matching sleeping bags—blue for Raven, red for Sol, and pink with sparkles for herself. "These are SO cute."
They moved on to snacks, first aid kits, and a suspicious number of mosquito patches.
Raven secretly grabbed marshmallows and skewers. Sol argued for a portable charger powered by solar energy. Ava made sure to buy her favorite sticker journal to document everything.
By the end of the evening, their apartment looked like a small expedition was about to launch.
Ava beamed as she arranged the gear. "This is gonna be the best trip ever."
Sol held up a bug net. "Define 'best' when used in combination with 'mosquitoes.'"
Raven gave a rare, quiet smile, watching them laugh.
And somewhere, far from the quiet joy of their room, unseen systems blinked quietly.
But they didn't interfere.
Because—for now—the world could wait.
