Chapter 293: The King Wants To Murder His Friend (I)
He raised his head, his usual smirk nowhere to be found. "If you can do that for me, Your Majesty … then I'll give you what you need to hide your power from the heavens."
To be honest, Primrose was still confused about Leofric's request. She couldn't even control her own ability yet, so how on earth was she supposed to make his sister believe she was healthy?
"Sir Leofric …" Primrose finally spoke. "Like you said earlier, don't I need a strong emotion to trigger my mind-control ability? Even if I wanted to, I might not be able to do what you're asking."
Besides that, Primrose also wondered whether Edmund even knew about Leofric's sister. As far as she could remember, her husband had never mentioned her, not in conversation, not even in his thoughts.
Well, maybe she didn't know because his wolf hid his thoughts. But why? There was nothing suspicious about thinking of a best friend's sister. It didn't seem like the kind of thing worth keeping secret.
"You can," Leofric said. "As long as you have a strong emotion in your heart, you can do it. The emotion doesn't have to be anger. Anything works, like sadness, for example."
Primrose slowly sat back down in her chair, tapping her fingers on the table before saying, "Do you think I'll be that sad when I meet your sister?"
Leofric chuckled, but it didn't sound like a happy laugh. Instead, it was an ironic one. "I'm afraid you'll cry a river after you see her."
Before Primrose could respond, he spoke again. "You really don't have to worry about whether you can control your ability or not, because I will guide you, Your Majesty."
There was a high chance that Leofric would make her feel so sad and guilty that she would be able to use her mind-control magic on his sister.
"May I ask … what kind of illness does your sister have?" Primrose asked carefully.
"Well, you wouldn't feel as sad if I told you now." Leofric smiled bitterly. "Maybe you can meet her tomorrow. I mean … the sooner you meet my sister, the sooner I can help you."
"What do you think, Your Majesty?" Leofric asked. "It's really just a simple question."
It did sound simple, but at the same time, his request was extremely difficult.
If his sister's illness was so severe that she couldn't even leave her bed, wouldn't that mean Primrose would be encouraging her to die sooner once she believed she was healthy?
She might want to do all the things she couldn't while sick—whether that meant eating a lot of unhealthy food or traveling to many places—until her body could no longer match her energy.
No matter how much her mind believed it, her body wouldn't be able to keep up with the lie.
Primrose could change someone's thoughts, but not their physical limits.
That was why, just as Leofric had said earlier, it implied that Primrose would be leading his sister to her demise after making her happy.
But perhaps that was the point.
Leofric wanted his sister to enjoy life and be happy, even if the cost was shortening her lifespan.
"Does my husband know about this?" Primrose asked.
Leofric answered without missing a beat. "He knows about my sister's condition, but we decided to hide her existence for her safety. That's probably why you've never heard Edmund talk about her to you."
Maybe that was also why she had never heard Edmund think about his sister. Perhaps his wolf also wanted to keep it a secret for Leofric's sake.
"Alright, my husband knows about your sister's condition," Primrose said, "but does he know about the deal we're about to make right now?"
Leofric froze for a moment, then slowly shifted his gaze to the side to avoid meeting Primrose's eyes.
Yeah, Leofric definitely wanted Primrose to keep their deal a secret from Edmund.
He probably thought Edmund would force him to spill the information about how to save his wife from the heavenly trial.
Well, that did sound like something Edmund would do.
"I'm not going to hide anything from my husband anymore," Primrose stated firmly. "We've already passed that phase."
Leofric groaned. "Oh, come on, just this once," he said. "Edmund probably won't forgive me if I try to use you to gain ben—"
"No," Primrose cut him off immediately. "If you want me to do something, my husband has to know about it. It's not because I'm afraid of him or because he has any right over me, but simply because I respect Edmund as my husband."
Besides, she also didn't want to have another miscommunication with her husband ever again.
Leofric creased his forehead. "Don't you think the heavenly trial is something you should be more worried about than your husband's permission?"
"No," Primrose answered without the slightest hesitation. "My husband is more important than anything. Besides … I'm sure you'll give me that 'special' thing eventually."
Leofric frowned, looking like he was deep in thought, probably making sure he was still protecting his mind with magic.
But honestly, Primrose didn't say that because she had read his thoughts. She simply believed that Leofric wasn't heartless enough to let her die because of the heavenly trial.
More than that, he certainly wouldn't let Edmund lose his wife.
"Alright." Leofric let out a heavy sigh. "Let's say I also tell Edmund about this … would you be willing to control my sister's mind?"
Primrose nodded. "Yes, I would."
Even though she knew she would be indirectly pushing his sister toward her death, she also knew that his sister deserved some happiness before dying for eternity.
Leofric's fingers toyed with the edge of his collar, looking genuinely nervous about making the decision. "If I tell Edmund … can you promise he won't explode at me?"
Primrose's lips curved into a small, confident smile. "I can handle that. He listens to me … most of the time."
She honestly didn't think Edmund would kill his one and only friend on the spot.
Maybe he would be annoyed or mad, but immediately try to murder Leofric? She doubted it.
