Chapter 46: Chapter 63: The Art of Manipulation in Action
The next morning, Kris Jenner's house was abuzz. The Kardashian-Jenner sisters were still intrigued by Derek's lecture on manipulation, persuasion, and negotiation. As they all ate breakfast, Derek could tell their curiosity was far from being satisfied.
Kendall, always the most curious, was the first to speak. "Derek, you mentioned yesterday about using manipulation and persuasion, and it got me thinking… Have you ever used it in anything in your life outside of missions? Like, in business?"
Derek laughed, realizing that this would be the topic of the day. "Yeah, sure. In the business world, these techniques are extremely useful. Especially when it comes to negotiations."
Kylie, who was sitting next to Derek, looked at him curiously. "Can you show us an example? I mean, I understand the theory, but I want to see it in action."
Derek smiled enigmatically. "I actually have something that might help. I recently negotiated a deal to expand my gym, and I used some of these techniques. And it just so happens that the meeting was recorded."
Everyone's eyes widened. Kim, always focused on learning something new for her business, leaned forward. "Do you have the recording? It would be awesome to see how this works in practice."
"Yes, I do," Derek said. He pulled his phone out of his pocket and searched for the video. "I'm going to show you the time I had to negotiate a complicated contract to secure a new partnership with a large sports equipment company."
As he prepared the video, Kris, who had always loved watching business negotiations, looked eager to watch. "This is going to be interesting," she said, smiling in anticipation.
The video started playing, and everyone fell silent. On the screen, Derek was sitting in a conference room at a large company, with the CEO and other executives in front of him. He was dressed casually, but his demeanor was that of someone who knew exactly what he wanted.
At the start of the meeting, the CEO began by discussing the terms of the contract. "Well, Derek, we're very interested in supplying our equipment to your gym, but to be honest, our prices are firm. We can't go any lower than they are."
Derek, in the video, nodded, keeping his expression calm. The Kardashian-Jenners watched intently, waiting to see how he would handle the situation.
"I understand," Derek replied, his voice calm and controlled. "And I respect the fact that you have a standard of quality to maintain. But let me ask you something: are you more interested in selling this equipment to just anyone or forming a long-term partnership with someone who will push your brand in the marketplace?"
The CEO blinked, clearly surprised by the subtle change in perspective. "Well… we'd prefer a long-term partnership, of course."
Derek in the video smiled, leaning forward slightly, establishing a connection. "So if that's the case, I believe you also see the value my gym and my members can bring to your image. We're known for training some of the biggest celebrities and athletes. If you could tailor the proposal to something that works best for us, I'm sure we can give your brand the exposure it deserves."
Kim, watching the video, let out an impressed murmur. "He's completely changed the subject of the conversation."
Kendall nodded in amazement. "That's what he was talking about when it came to controlling the narrative."
In the video, the CEO began to reconsider, realizing what was at stake. "Well, that's an interesting perspective. Maybe we can revisit the terms."
Derek, still in control, paused slightly, using the silence to let the CEO think more about the proposal. "The point is simple," he continued. "You can keep the price where it is, but you'll lose the opportunity to have your brand associated with my work, which is in high demand. Or we can adjust this contract and secure a partnership that will benefit both parties for many years to come."
The tension in the room was palpable, but Derek kept his cool, confident in the technique he was using. The CEO looked around at his executives, clearly trying to decide what to do next. Finally, he looked back at Derek and sighed. "I'll see what we can do. We can adjust the contract to meet some of your requirements."
Derek nodded, thanking him politely. "That would be great. I'm sure together we can do something great."
The video ended with the CEO shaking Derek's hand, a satisfied smile on both their faces.
As soon as the video ended, the room was silent, absorbing what they had just seen. Kris was the first to speak. "Derek, that was incredible. You controlled the conversation from start to finish without being pushy, but you got what you wanted."
Derek smiled modestly. "The key is to always make the other person feel like they're gaining something. Even though you know you're in control, you can never seem like you're forcing it. It's a subtle dance."
Kourtney, who was usually the quietest in these discussions, commented, "I liked how you used silence. It was like you gave the CEO time to realize he had to make concessions."
"Exactly," Derek said. "Silence is a powerful tool. People are afraid of it, and that's where you can take advantage."
Kim, still fascinated, looked at Derek. "Do you think we can use this in our negotiations too? I mean, a lot of times we're dealing with people who have their own agendas and want to control the situation."
Derek nodded. "Absolutely. The techniques I used in that meeting are universal. Whether it's in business, the media, or anywhere else, subtle manipulation, persuasion, and emotional control always work."
Kylie, who was sitting next to him, looked impressed. "Seeing it in action was even more impactful than hearing you explain it."
"That's why I wanted to show you," Derek said. "It's one thing to understand the theory, but when you see how the techniques work in the real world, they make more sense. And this was just a small taste of what can be done."
Kendall was more excited than ever. "I'm really going to try this in my next negotiations. If I can master these techniques, it will completely change the way I do business."
Kris, who was thoughtful, said, "Derek, you have to know that you not only taught us something valuable, but you also opened our eyes to a new way of looking at negotiations. It gives us an edge we didn't have before."
Derek smiled, pleased to have helped. "I'm glad it was helpful. Just remember to use these techniques wisely." Manipulation can be a powerful tool, but it must be used responsibly."
Kim looked at him with a smile. "Don't worry. We'll use this for good…and for business."
The group laughed, and the conversation continued in a lighter tone. However, the impact of the techniques Derek had demonstrated still lingered in the room. Each of the sisters, and Kris, were now armed with a new set of skills that they would surely use in their next business dealings.
Derek had once again proven himself to be not only a trained former operative, but also a valuable mentor to the most influential women in business and media.
