Chapter 9: chapter 10: The Blackmail
For the past few weeks I have been having regular visits to Ethan's office even more than his assistant, and it wasn't getting past the nose of others in the building, I was becoming the talk of the building, rumours has it that I was in a relationship with Ethan, some had disagreed out of jealousy saying Ethan wouldn't stoop so low to a wench like me. I got hurt hearing all of this but I never once reacted back, I tried as much as possible to avoid trouble.even though I was actually getting closer to Ethan I still didn't want to cause trouble and have my job out of my hands.
As I sat in Ethan's office, I couldn't help but wonder what Sophia had on him. What could be so damaging that Ethan was willing to pay her millions to keep quiet?
Ethan seemed to sense my curiosity and leaned forward, his eyes locked on mine. "Sophia has a recording of a conversation I had with one of my business associates," he said, his voice low and serious. "A conversation that could ruin my reputation and destroy my business."
I felt a surge of surprise at his words. What could Ethan have said that was so damning?
"What was in the conversation?" I asked, my curiosity getting the better of me.
Ethan hesitated, his eyes darting around the room before finally settling on mine. "I made a mistake, Camila," he said. "A mistake that could cost me everything."
I leaned forward, my heart pounding in my chest. What had Ethan done? And how was he going to get out of this mess?
As Ethan's words hung in the air, I couldn't help but feel a sense of trepidation. What kind of mistake could be so catastrophic that it would ruin his reputation and destroy his business?
Ethan's eyes seemed to bore into mine, as if searching for something. Trust, perhaps? Understanding?
"I'm not proud of what I did, Camila," he said, his voice barely above a whisper. "But I'm trying to make it right. I'm trying to fix the damage that's been done."
I nodded, trying to process everything he was telling me. "What can I do to help?" I asked, feeling a sense of loyalty to him that I couldn't quite explain.
Ethan's eyes seemed to flash with gratitude, and for a moment, I thought I saw a glimmer of hope. "Just being here for me, listening to me... it means more than you'll ever know, Camila," he said.
As he spoke, I felt a sense of connection to him that I couldn't ignore. It was as if we were bound together by some unseen force, tied by threads of trust and loyalty.
And in that moment, I knew that I would do whatever it took to help Ethan. I would stand by him, no matter what secrets he was hiding, no matter what mistakes he had made.
But as I looked into his eyes, I couldn't shake the feeling that there was still so much he wasn't telling me. So much that he was hiding, even from me.
As I gazed into Ethan's eyes, I felt like I was drowning in their depths. I saw a flicker of emotion there, a hint of vulnerability that he quickly masked.
But I had seen it, and it had left me breathless. I felt like I was getting closer to the truth, like I was peeling back the layers of Ethan's carefully constructed facade.
"Ethan, what's going on?" I asked, my voice barely above a whisper. "What's really going on?"
Ethan's eyes narrowed, and he leaned back in his chair. "I've told you everything, Camila," he said, his voice smooth as silk. "I've been blackmailed by Sophia, and I'm trying to find a way to stop her."
But I knew that wasn't the whole truth. I knew that there was more to the story, more to Ethan's secrets.
And I was determined to find out what it was.
I stood up, my heart pounding in my chest. "I need to go," I said, trying to sound calm.
Ethan's eyes flashed with surprise, but he nodded. "Okay," he said. "But Camila?"
I turned back to him, my eyes meeting his. "Yes?"
Ethan's gaze held mine, his eyes burning with intensity. "Be careful," he said. "Sophia is not someone to be underestimated."
I nodded, feeling a shiver run down my spine. I knew that I was playing with fire, that I was getting in over my head.
But I couldn't help myself. I was drawn to Ethan, drawn to the secrets and the scandals that surrounded him.
As I left Ethan's office, I couldn't shake the feeling that I was being watched. I glanced over my shoulder, but there was no one there.
I made my way back to my own office, my mind racing with thoughts of Ethan and Sophia. What was the truth behind their relationship? And what secrets was Ethan hiding?
As I sat down at my desk, I noticed a piece of paper with a note scribbled on it. It was from Rachel, Ethan's assistant.
"Meet me in the break room at 2pm," the note read. "I need to talk to you about something."
I frowned, wondering what Rachel wanted to talk to me about. Was it something to do with Ethan?
I tried to focus on my work, but my mind kept wandering back to Ethan and Sophia. I couldn't shake the feeling that there was more to their story than I was being told.
At 2pm, I made my way to the break room. Rachel was already there, sipping on a cup of coffee.
"Hey, Camila," she said, as I sat down beside her. "I'm glad you could make it."
I smiled, wondering what Rachel wanted to talk to me about. "What's up?" I asked.
Rachel leaned in, her voice dropping to a whisper. "I've been noticing some strange things going on around the office," she said. "Things that make me think Ethan is in trouble."
My heart skipped a beat as I listened to Rachel's words. What kind of trouble was Ethan in? And what did Rachel know that I didn't?
