Chapter 37 - HIS MOTHER'S JOURNAL
The next day, Kevin came to Andre's funeral with his other colleagues. The atmosphere was dark and gloomy as many people shed tears incessantly.
Andre's wife was the hardest hit. The lady continued to cry and even fainted during the funeral ceremony. It was not an easy thing for the pretty lady. Moreover, she was currently two months pregnant.
Her name was Julia Concord, and Kevin had chatted with her earlier to convey his deepest condolences. The young man also expressed his intention to take the responsibility for Andre's future child until the child grew up, but the lady politely refused. She said that Andre left a large amount of savings for her so that she could raise their first child.
Kevin was stunned. A man who often acted silly like Andre was so thoughtful of his family's future. Kevin mourned again. He did not think that the phone call with Andre a few days ago would be the last for them. He regretted that he kept teasing Andre even though the latter was worried about him.
Yesterday Kris offered to kill Jack, but Kevin forbade the werewolf.
"You said that your strength is inferior compared to his strength, so don't do anything that may endanger your life."
That was what he said to the taller man yesterday. He didn't stay with the werewolf for too long and went back to his house right away. He said that he needed some time to be alone, and Kris respected his choice.
Kevin's feelings were still in turmoil today. He was still wearing his black suit, but he didn't go straight to his house and headed to the laboratory instead. His coworkers advised him to go home and rest, but he refused. He wanted to immediately finish his pending work of uncovering what his mother kept in the cloud storage.
Kevin was now struggling with the smart monitor on his desk. He had taken off his black coat, and now it draped over the back of the chair he was sitting on.
The laboratory atmosphere was so quiet, and he missed Andre, who usually enlivened the atmosphere. Andre had just left, but Kevin already missed him so much.
Kevin sighed heavily, then began writing down his mother's e-mail address on the smart monitor. He then worked his brain to find his mother's password.
Suddenly, the document with the cover "BLUE" came to his mind. He found his mother's e-mail address in the document, so probably the password had something to do with it.
Kevin seemed to get a clue. 'Could it be that the password had something to do with Blue?'
Kevin's memory drifted back to events related to Blue. He remembered a time when he suspected Blue and Kris were hiding something. He also remembered when Kris asked Blue to talk alone while he was about to leave his house. Kris was a werewolf, and he was very interested in Blue from the start. So, could Blue be the key to all these secrets?
Nothing was guaranteed, but Kevin wanted to give it a try. In the password field, he typed "BLUE20211210." Blue's birthday was on December 10, 2021. He then pressed enter, but it was the wrong password.
'So, it's not related to Blue?' Kevin wondered as he showed a disappointed expression.
Kevin was desperate, but his eyes accidentally caught a document on the table. That was one of the documents left by his parents. He took the document and opened it. He read the contents for a moment, and once again he got a pointer.
His mother used to use the day-month-year format when she was alive. He just remembered about that. He then immediately typed a new password again, and this time it was "BLUE10122021."
Miraculously, it worked! Kevin was not wrong. It turned out that Blue had something to do with the mystery!
After awakening from his shock, Kevin then opened his mother's cloud storage, and he was jolted again. In his mother's cloud storage, there were many documents related to werewolves. It looked like his mother kept all her research results in the cloud storage. So, even though the physical documents were burned, he now had the backup.
Kevin breathed a sigh of relief, but then came back to wonder, 'Why did my mom use Blue's birthday as the password for her important email account?'
He just shook his head as he opened the documents in the cloud storage. He skimmed through the contents of the documents, and he suddenly stopped at one document. No, it wasn't a document related to Blue, but it looked more like a journal belonged to his mother.
["May 1, 1980. Our research finally bore fruit. We always dreamed of being able to make humans stronger and to have a long life expectancy, and finally, that hope came true. Joseph and I managed to find a formula for that purpose. With that formula, I'm sure humans will become the strongest creatures on Earth."]
["May 12, 1980. We tested the formula. Joseph and I had asked our superiors to provide a volunteer to try our formula, but our request was denied. Joseph finally decided to do this illegally. He paid someone to kidnap a middle school student to be the object of our experiment. It's not a good move, but we believe our formula will give a positive impact on the teenager."]
["May 13, 1980. The results of our formula trials started showing today, and we failed. The formula didn't make humans stronger and live longer, but instead, it caused the teenager to turn into a werewolf."]
A cold sweat broke out on his forehead after Kevin finished reading the third writing in his mother's journal. He was very horrified to read the writing. It was not difficult for him to digest what his mother wrote in the journal.
Even though his heart kept on voicing rejection, but he couldn't deny one fact; his parents were the ones who created werewolves.
The fact was a blow to Kevin. He thought his parents were heroes who fought against werewolves, but the truth was they were the ones who caused humans to have mutated and transformed into werewolves.
Kevin knew that his parents weren't married in 1980, but he had known that they had been a research partner since they were young. At that time, his mother was only 19 years old and his father only 20 years old, but they were both known as scientific marvels because of their genius intelligence. Not surprisingly, at that young age, they were recruited by the government to become professional scientists.
'But, shouldn't there be only one werewolf and they should be able to control it before causing havoc?' Kevin felt that this story still had a sequel, so he continued reading the journal.
["May 17, 1980. Joseph and I had a failure. The teenager turned into a werewolf that could not be controlled. We have to put him in an iron cage so that he won't cause trouble. I told Joseph to destroy the failed formula and get rid of the werewolf, but Joseph against the idea."]
Again, Kevin was appalled to read his mother's journal. It turned out that his guess was right. The first werewolf should have been eliminated before they wreaked havoc, but it was his father who disagreed with that. Kevin's almond eyes stared at the screen blankly.
["May 20, 1980. This is a disaster. Joseph has a plan to breed werewolves and rule the world. He wants to develop the dangerous formula in secret. He will continue to kidnap humans to give them the formula so that they turn into werewolves. I had tried to forbid him, but he sticks to his stance. Forgive me."]
Kevin's body was getting limp. Father, it turned out that his father was the mastermind behind it all. Kevin knew that werewolves were growing very fast back then, but he thought it was only because they were able to reproduce so quickly. He did not think that his father had deliberately created a big number of werewolves to rule the world.
His father. 'What was dad's goal by doing that?' Kevin wondered desperately.
He always considered his parents as heroes who dedicated their lives to mankind, he also always considered his father to be a gentle and noble-hearted person, but who would have thought that all of this was just an illusion? His father turned out to be a criminal.
And his mother. Kevin couldn't understand her at all. 'Why did mom still wanted to marry dad after knowing dad's true color? Was it just because of love? Was mom blinded by love?'
Kevin's chest tightened at the thought. He had just experienced the deep sorrow of losing his best friends, and now he had to face the fact that his parents were the mastermind behind the calamity.
Kevin couldn't go on with everything anymore for now. The fair-skinned man finally turned off the monitor and leaned his head against the back of the chair as he closed his eyes.
While the young scientist was trying to rest his mind, his cellphone that was lying on the table suddenly vibrated. He opened his eyes again and grabbed the thing. He looked at the screen and spotted Kris's name on it. He immediately answered the call.
"Yes, Kris?"
"Kevin, Blue is missing."
