Chapter 98: Inviting Guests for Dinner
As soon as they returned to the Zhao Family, they saw a goji berry plant, roots still caked with soil as if freshly dug up, placed in the courtyard. Zhao Zhitong immediately put down her luggage box and ran over excitedly to take a look. After observing it for a while, she called her elder brother, Zhao Cheng, to help her plant it in the vegetable plot.
Upon hearing this, Zhao Dong immediately objected, "No way! Just look, we don't have any room left in the vegetable plot. You bring home everything you dig up outside; are we even going to plant vegetables here anymore?"
Zhao Zhitong pouted, her eyes darting around before she quickly suggested, "Big Brother, let's plant it here then!"
Saying this, she trotted over to a vacant spot on the west side of the courtyard. It was an area between the outhouse and the entrance that had previously been used to store some wood and planks but had recently been cleared. The vacant plot was about eight square meters in size.
Seeing Zhao Dong nod in agreement, the four little ones worked together to plant the goji berry.
「In the following days,」 Zhao Dong and his Younger Uncle, Sun Youcai, led the little radish heads in diligently clearing more land.
A mu of land here was about 667 square meters, roughly the size of one and a half basketball courts. Moreover, the plot Zhao Dong had chosen was filled with small shrubs and tree roots, which, lacking modern tools, they had to clear slowly.
During these few days, Zhao Zhitong managed to wake up very early with them twice, but after that, she couldn't get up anymore. However, she did manage to move two more goji berry plants from the wild to her home, planting them together with the first one.
So, now her family had three 'trees': one goji berry plant, and the other two were also goji berry plants. This was what Zhao Zhitong told Qiao Muchen and Wei Shulan. Listening to her, Qiao Muchen felt something was off but couldn't quite pinpoint what it was.
「Qiao Muchen's cold had completely healed after three days,」 and he returned to the school, full of life and energy.
As a result, the three of them agreed to look around the school for goji berries to pick during their break after lunch.
Once the Teacher announced the end of class, Zhao Zhitong immediately stood up, pulled Wei Shulan and Qiao Muchen along, and rushed towards the kitchen.
The school's cook had been replaced and was no longer Sun Mei, so the three children no longer received special treatment. If they arrived late, they would only find watery vegetable soup left to eat. Consequently, Zhao Zhitong and her friends no longer strolled leisurely to the kitchen as they once had.
Moreover, the other students had protested for a long time because the new cook's food wasn't as delicious as Sun Mei's, and they no longer received free tofu.
「Even worse, later on, a rumor spread」 that Wei Shulian's mother had bribed Mrs. Wu to frame Sun Mei for stealing lamb, which led Sun Mei to resign in a fit of anger. Consequently, many students began to dislike Wei Shulian's mother, and Wei Shulian herself was significantly implicated due to this.
This, in turn, caused Wei Shulian to become even more hostile towards Zhao Zhitong and Wei Shulan.
Ordinarily, Wei Shulian would have definitely tried to cause them trouble. However, Wei Shulan was no longer the 'soft persimmon' she once was; in fact, she was showing signs of developing into a 'tigress.' If Wei Shulian dared to bother her, she never got away with it and was beaten back several times.
As for Zhao Zhitong, she had never been a 'soft persimmon' to begin with; she could be described as someone who never allowed herself to be taken advantage of.
So, after Wei Shulian had tried to cause them trouble a few times, not only did she fail to gain any advantage, but she was also punished by the Teacher. Furthermore, when she returned home, her eldest uncle reprimanded her. After that, she no longer dared to blatantly cause trouble for Zhao Zhitong and Wei Shulan.
However, she still frequently shot them dirty looks and made sarcastic remarks.
Just as the three of them had settled down with their food bowls in the dining hall, Wei Shulian's distinctively sarcastic voice piped up, "Wow, I think the new cook's food is so much better! The previous cook was so stingy with ingredients; I even found hair in the food several times!"
Her voice wasn't loud, but everyone in the dining hall heard it. Those few Wei sisters, who had previously followed Wei Shulian in bullying Wei Shulan, didn't join in this time, as Wei Shulan was no longer the person she used to be. Thus, when Wei Shulian spoke, none of them responded to her.
However, several of Wei Shulian's little hangers-on nodded and chimed in their agreement.
Zhao Zhitong glanced at her and then continued to eat; she was too lazy to bother with her.
But just then, Zhao Yue, who was sitting opposite Zhao Zhitong, suddenly spoke up, "I don't think so. I believe you've got it backward. The current cook is the one who's actually like that." As he spoke, he picked a hair out of his food. "This is the second hair I've found." With that, he placed it right in front of Wei Shulian, deliberately trying to disgust her. Infuriated, Wei Shulian glared fiercely at Zhao Yue.
Wei Shulian was no longer as imposing as before; although she remained willful and capricious, her classmates were not really afraid of her anymore.
At this moment, the other students also began to reminisce about Sun Mei's cooking.
"I really miss Aunt Sun's cooking! Look at this dish, it's just boiled cabbage—not tasty at all."
"I miss Aunt Sun's cooking too! Aunt Sun's food is even better than my mom's. My mom always burns the food when she stir-fries."
...
After reminiscing for a while, someone suddenly asked, "Hey, Zhao Zhitong, isn't Aunt Sun your mom?"
Zhao Zhitong lifted her head from her bowl and blinked. "Yes, she is. What's the matter?"
As soon as she said this, a wave of envious chatter erupted. Everyone expressed their envy for Zhao Zhitong having a mother who could cook so well.
Hearing her mother being praised, Zhao Zhitong was overjoyed. In a burst of enthusiasm, she magnanimously announced that she would invite her classmates to her house for a meal during the upcoming school break. Cheers instantly filled the dining hall, with everyone eagerly saying they would definitely go.
Across from them, Wei Shulian sneered, "Are you all stupid? Zhao Zhitong's mom makes delicious food because the cafeteria has plenty of ingredients. Her family is dirt poor; they probably don't even have oil for cooking. What good food could they possibly have?"
However, nobody paid her any attention. Even the lackeys she had just won over timidly approached Zhao Zhitong and apologized, "Zhao Zhitong, we're sorry. We were forced by Miss Wei to say those things. We didn't really mean them."
Zhao Zhitong glanced at them, recognizing them as the two so-called best friends who had abandoned Zhao Yue: one named Zhao Huzi, and the other Zhao Damao.
Zhao Zhitong didn't have a particularly good impression of them, but she was a magnanimous person and decided not to hold it against them. So, she nodded. "Alright, since you've admitted your mistakes, I'll forgive you."
Seeing that Zhao Zhitong had forgiven them, the two timidly asked, "Then, can we also come to your house for a meal during this break?"
Zhao Zhitong cast them a sidelong glance. "That will depend on your behavior. If you misbehave and bully your classmates, I won't invite you."
Zhao Huzi and Zhao Damao repeatedly promised, "We swear, we'll listen to whatever you say and never bully our classmates again!"
Meanwhile, Wei Shulian's eyes were red with fury. Finally, huffing with anger, she called them "bootlickers" and ran out of the dining hall crying.
Zhao Zhitong coughed, then put on a serious little face and said to Zhao Huzi and Zhao Damao, "You two, hurry up and eat. You mustn't waste food. Good children don't waste food."
The two immediately nodded and hurried back to their seats. Picking up their bowls, they began to shovel food into their mouths.
After finishing their meal, Zhao Zhitong and her two friends were about to go pick goji berries, but just as they stepped out of the dining hall, Zhao Yue blocked their path.
