Chapter 97 Immunity
Mother Qiao opened the door and came in. With a mix of helplessness and concern, she said, "I know you study diligently, but you haven't fully recovered yet. Let's not read for now, alright?"
Qiao Muchen said anxiously, "Mother, I'm not trying to read. Just give me the luggage box."
Unable to dissuade her son, Mother Qiao asked Xiao Shitou to bring in his luggage box.
Qiao Muchen quickly sat up, took the luggage box, and rummaged through it. In no time, he found a paper-wrapped package. Upon finding it, he breathed a sigh of relief, clutching it preciously.
Curious, Mother Qiao asked, "What's this? You're treating it like such a treasure."
Qiao Muchen said mysteriously, "Mother, these are goji berries. Tongtong gave them to me. She said eating them can improve... improve what 'power' was it again?"
Qiao Muchen struggled to explain, but Mother Qiao still didn't quite grasp what he meant.
Qiao Muchen grew anxious. He'd been muddle-headed from his illness and couldn't quite recall what Zhao Zhitong had called that 'power.' His face flushed red before he finally declared, "Anyway, if I eat these, I won't get sick anymore!"
Saying this, he handed the goji berries to Mother Qiao. "Mother, please help me dry these. Tongtong said once they're dried, they can be steeped in water or cooked in pork soup."
Mother Qiao took them doubtfully. Opening the paper package, she saw a small handful of little red berries, though many were now wrinkled from being squashed.
Mother Qiao knew nothing about medicinal herbs and didn't recognize them. She smiled and asked, clearly skeptical, "These little berries can stop you from getting sick?"
Qiao Muchen nodded firmly. "It's true! Tongtong said so," he insisted.
Hearing this, Mother Qiao chuckled. "My, you certainly trust that little girl's words."
A small, proud smile touched Qiao Muchen's lips. "Of course! Tongtong is learning medicine from her maternal grandfather. She's definitely going to be the most skilled physician in the world one day!"
Seeing Qiao Muchen looking much better and speaking with such a lighthearted tone, Mother Qiao felt greatly relieved. She couldn't help but tease her son, "Well, well. She'll be the most skilled physician, so what are *you* getting all proud about?"
Qiao Muchen stated, as if it were the most natural thing in the world, "She's my best friend! And I'll be the friend of the world's most skilled physician, so of course, I'm proud!"
With that, he urged Mother Qiao to hurry and dry his goji berries.
Mother Qiao sighed, shook her head, and took the goji berries out.
When school let out, Zhao Zhitong dragged her little cousin along, rushing towards Qiao Muchen's house. Wei Shulan had planned to go with Zhao Zhitong to visit their friend, but she was suddenly called away by her grandmother's maid. Apparently, her maternal cousin had arrived at their home.
As she left, Wei Shulan couldn't help but complain about this cousin with a look of disdain.
Ever since Wei Shulan had stopped being so timid and reserved, daring to be herself, she had become much more confident and poised. This cousin, who used to disdain her, had suddenly become quite clingy. He no longer clamored to break off their engagement and visited his maternal grandmother's (Wei Shulan's grandmother's) house every few days. Seeing the thaw in their relationship, Old Mrs. Wei was overjoyed.
Therefore, whenever Wei Shulan's cousin, Zhou Zhenxuan, came to visit, Old Mrs. Wei would send someone to call Wei Shulan home.
Zhao Zhitong waved goodbye to Wei Shulan and knocked on the Qiao family's door.
It was Old Lady Qian who opened the door. Zhao Zhitong immediately greeted her sweetly, "Hello, Grandma Qian! I've come to see Qiao Muchen."
Old Lady Qian's eyes crinkled with a smile as she hurriedly ushered Zhao Zhitong and her little cousin inside. "Quickly, come in, come in."
From his room, Qiao Muchen heard Zhao Zhitong exchanging greetings with Mother Qiao in the courtyard and immediately sat up in bed. The next moment, his door opened, and Zhao Zhitong bounded in. She came to his bedside and, seeing his spirits were much improved, asked, "Are you feeling a lot better?"
Qiao Muchen nodded. "Your maternal grandfather's prescription is truly effective! I took the medicine, had a good sleep, and already feel like I have more strength."
Hearing her maternal grandfather praised, Zhao Zhitong puffed up with pride. Then, like a little adult, she instructed Qiao Muchen, "Then you must take your medicine on time and rest well. You'll be fully recovered very soon!"
After that, Zhao Zhitong sat by the bed and chatted with Qiao Muchen. First, she recounted what the Teacher had discussed in the school that afternoon.
Then, their conversation drifted to 'immunity,' and Qiao Muchen curiously asked what this 'immunity army' actually looked like.
Coincidentally, Grandpa Bai had already taught her a lot about immunity that afternoon. So, Zhao Zhitong excitedly began to explain it all to Qiao Muchen.
Zhao Zhitong pointed at Qiao Muchen's body. "They're inside your body right now!"
Qiao Muchen quickly looked over his own body, asking in surprise, "Really? Where are they? Can you call them out so I can see?"
Zhao Zhitong gently tapped Qiao Muchen on the head. "Stop looking. You can't see them. They're very, very tiny. Our eyes can't see them; you need a 'microscope' to see them."
Qiao Muchen looked bewildered. "Microscope? What's that?"
Zhao Zhitong thought for a moment. "It's a kind of mirror that can make things look much, much bigger. But I don't know exactly what it looks like; I've never seen one either."
At this, Zhao Zhitong gave Qiao Muchen a little nudge. "I'm explaining immunity to you, so don't get sidetracked! Our immune system is very complex, you know. It has immune organs, like our bone marrow, our spleen…"
Zhao Zhitong launched into a string of new terms—one moment 'cells,' the next 'viruses,' then 'bacteria,' and then 'phagocytes,' 'B cells,' 'T cells.' Qiao Muchen listened, his eyes wide with utter bafflement.
Seeing he didn't understand, Zhao Zhitong took a piece of paper from her luggage box and drew cells for Qiao Muchen. She also drew the human body's three lines of defense, explaining step-by-step how they protect the body from the onslaught of germs. She emphasized the third line of defense, describing it like a war that annihilates the viruses causing illness.
Qiao Muchen listened, completely captivated. "They're incredible! So, every time we get sick, a huge battle is actually happening inside our bodies!"
Then he asked, "So, when you talk about 'improving immunity,' does that mean increasing the fighting strength of these... cells?"
Zhao Zhitong nodded emphatically. "Exactly, yes!"
Qiao Muchen's eyes lit up. "Then I absolutely must eat more goji berries!"
Zhao Zhitong readily agreed. "Mm-hmm, that's right! When you're all better, I'll take you to pick goji berries!"
Then she suddenly added, "But that's not the only way to boost immunity. Eating well and exercising help too!" With that, she began to teach Qiao Muchen the morning exercises she had learned in kindergarten.
Mother Qiao, entering with snacks for the children, happened to see the two little ones in the room, performing some rather peculiar movements.
Seeing his mother, Qiao Muchen happily shared, "Mother, Mother! Tongtong taught me this; it's called 'morning exercise'! From now on, I'll do it every morning. That way, I'll get strong and healthy!"
Seeing her son looking much more energetic, with even a healthy flush returning to his little face, Mother Qiao smiled. She quickly urged them to pause and come have some snacks.
Qiao Muchen's health was improving, and his appetite had returned. At the mention of snacks, he realized he was genuinely hungry. He pulled Zhao Zhitong over. "Wow, Tongtong, come quick! Grandma Qian made these snacks! They're so delicious!"
And so, the two happily ate their snacks and read for a while. As dusk began to settle, Zhao Zhitong bid them farewell and headed home.
