Chapter 122: Mrs. Wang's Suspicion
By now, Mrs. Sun was wide awake. She nodded continuously, showing that she understood.
Meanwhile, after Tie Zhu's wife, Mrs. Zheng, had finished gossiping on the streets and sent many women home to complain to their husbands, she headed off to Zhao Dong's stepmother, Mrs. Wang.
As soon as she saw Mrs. Wang, she blurted out everything about Zhao Dong's plan to build a house.
Mrs. Zheng exaggerated, "Auntie, you have no idea! There are more than a dozen carts full of bricks and tiles, and it looks like they're not even done yet. How big of a mansion are they building? It seems their family has really struck it rich!"
When Mrs. Zheng finished her rambling, Mrs. Wang was shocked. She had heard before that Zhao Dong's poor family was planning to build a house.
However, she thought, such a destitute family, a bunch of jinxes, even if they were building a house, what decent house could they possibly build? At most, they would just add two more mud-brick rooms.
Now, hearing what Mrs. Zheng said, she was completely taken aback. She never expected that poor family to not only build a house with bricks and tiles but a large mansion!
Shocked, she asked in disbelief, "Really? Is their family truly building a mansion?"
Mrs. Zheng nodded firmly. "Absolutely! I saw it with my own eyes. Cart after cart of bricks and tiles being pulled into their home. I can't be mistaken!"
Mrs. Wang's eyes widened in astonishment. Finding it hard to believe, she exclaimed, "What have they done to make so much money?!"
Then, after pondering for a moment, she asked, "Mrs. Zheng, you're well-informed. Have you heard on the street what Zhao Dong's family has been up to lately?"
Realizing her information was valued, Mrs. Zheng felt delighted and excitedly said, "Auntie, you've asked the right person!"
In her eagerness to curry favor with Mrs. Wang, she had diligently gathered any news about Zhao Dong's family. Now, she had plenty to share.
So, she rattled on, recounting all the recent happenings in Zhao Dong's family.
She knew they had planted five mu of fruit trees on their hillside, cleared a mu of wasteland, and even that Zhao Zhitong had gotten a puppy.
It was as if she had installed a surveillance camera at the gate of Zhao Dong's home.
Mrs. Wang listened for a long time, her eyebrows furrowed.
These things were indeed a bit strange, and in her opinion, very foolish. How could they possibly make a huge fortune from that!
Meanwhile, Mrs. Zheng continued to gossip, saying that many people in the village thought Zhao Dong was foolish. He hadn't planted crops in his good fields; instead, he'd planted a plot of fruit tree seedlings. Everyone was waiting for his family to "drink the northwest wind."
Hearing this, Mrs. Wang sneered coldly, "That's truly foolish. Planting fruit trees? I've never heard of such a thing! And reclaiming wasteland? The taxes alone will be more than they can handle!"
After the two had stood at the doorway disparaging Zhao Dong's family, Mrs. Wang returned home and curiously asked Mr. Zhao, "Hey, old man, do you know Zhao Dong's family is going to build a mansion now?"
Then, she recounted the rumors from the streets.
She then offered her own analysis, "Hey, old man, do you think Zhao Dong is involved in something illegal, like thievery? Otherwise, where would he get so much money?"
Finally, a wave of fear washed over her. "Old man, they won't drag our whole clan into this, will they? We can't let this jeopardize my eldest grandson's path to becoming a top scholar! Oh, no, I still think we should ask the clan leader to expel their family!"
This was typical of her. She couldn't stand to see others doing better than her own family. If someone else prospered, she was convinced they must have resorted to improper means.
Mr. Zhao, however, was happy for Zhao Dong. Hearing Mrs. Wang's subsequent remarks, he grew displeased. Frowning, he said, "What are you babbling about? Expulsion? Don't ever mention this again! Besides, isn't it a good thing if Zhao Dong's family prospers? It'll save you from worrying all day that they're after your money!"
"HUMPH!"
Mrs. Wang snorted coldly and ignored Mr. Zhao. She turned and entered the house, I should ask my third son about this. He has a wide network in the marketplace and will surely know what's going on.
Regardless of how the rumors spread outside or what their stepmother said about them, Zhao Dong's family couldn't care less. They were busy bustling about, working towards their own happy future.
The residential plot they had purchased was at the village tail, near Zhang Qiang's home. When Zhang Qiang saw them unloading bricks and tiles there, he came out to help.
Zhao Zhitong and the four little sprouts were still running around, playing on the new plot of land.
Wei Shulan exclaimed happily, "Tongtong, your new plot is so big!"
Zhao Zhitong replied, "Yeah, isn't it? Soon, I'll have my own study!"
Then, pointing to different spots on the plot, she began to grandly outline her plans.
"This area here will be the courtyard! I'll put up a swing right here, under the tree next to the grape trellis. In the summer, I can sit on the swing, enjoy the cool shade, and read books..."
Zhao Yue, greatly envying the scene Zhao Zhitong described, asked in a soft, slightly awkward voice, "Tongtong, when it's built, can I try it too?"
He had wanted a swing for a long time, but his father wouldn't build one for him.
Qiao Muchen and Wei Shulan also loved the scene Zhao Zhitong described, and they chimed in, asking if they could try it too.
Zhao Zhitong confidently puffed out her chest and declared generously, "Of course! We can all take turns!"
While the little ones played on the plot, Zhao Dong and the helpers had unloaded all the bricks and tiles from the carts, stacking them into several neat piles.
Zhao Dong, worried that bricks might fall and hit the children, didn't let them play near the stacks. After the last few cartloads of bricks and tiles were delivered, Zhao Dong took the little sprouts back home.
Qiao Muchen and the others played with Da Bao, the puppy, in Zhao Zhitong's family courtyard for a while. After agreeing to meet under the big pagoda tree at the school to read together the next day, they each returned to their own homes.
Zhao Dong's family was building a house and recruiting workers from the village, causing the whole village to buzz with excitement.
The well-digging and ice cellar construction teams were specialists brought by Zhang Jinbao. These skills were family traditions, unknown to outsiders.
For the house construction, Zhang Jinbao only brought a few skilled technicians; Zhao Dong had to find the other laborers himself.
So, Zhao Dong approached a few families in the village with whom he had good relations, such as those of Shi Tou, Zhang Qiang, and Hu Zi.
When Zhao Dong proposed the work, they agreed immediately without even asking about the wages.
Since the busy farming season had just ended, many villagers, hearing that Zhao Dong's family was hiring workers for construction, proactively approached Zhao Dong to offer their help.
Of course, there were also many like Mrs. Zheng, who held their husbands back, fearing Zhao Dong's family wouldn't be able to pay the wages.
Two days later, the well-digging team arrived. They first inspected the plot, selected a location for the well, and then immediately cordoned off the area with wooden planks.
This was to prevent the prime well-digging spot from being inadvertently encroached upon during the later house construction.
After all, the well's location significantly influences the overall layout of the courtyard. Fortunately, the best spot for the well was in the rear courtyard, which perfectly matched Zhao Dong's intentions.
At the Zhao family home, the young couple, inexperienced in house building, were understandably anxious. Consequently, the grandmother, Zhao Guifen, often came over to remind them of important points to consider.
