Chapter 121: The Dog-Blood Topic Triggered by Building a House
Most villagers had seen the bricks and tiles being transported back to Zhao Dong's Residence. The sight of batch after batch of bricks and tiles being delivered stirred up excitement in the village.
Many children gathered together, running and shouting after the carts.
Villagers who had been chatting idly in the village all looked on with astonishment as cart after cart of bricks and tiles were hauled into the village.
"Wow, are all these bricks and tiles really for Zhao Dong's house? There are just too many of them."
"They must be. Didn't you see Zhao Dong following behind the carts?"
"They're going to build a brick and tile house! And look at the amount of bricks and tiles; the house they're building must be huge. Zhao Dong's family must have made a fortune!"
"Hey, Zhao Dong is coming over."
It's no wonder the villagers were making such a fuss; the village was simply too poor. As far as the eye could see, there were hardly any brick and tile houses in Zhao Village. Most houses were made of mud, had thatched roofs, or were constructed from wooden boards.
Therefore, seeing so many bricks and tiles being brought back to Zhao Dong's place caught everyone's attention.
At that time, Zhao Dong was walking behind the last two carts.
Tie Zhu's wife—Mrs. Zheng, who always flattered Zhao Dong's stepmother—said with sarcasm, "Oh, Brother Dong, what are you going to do with all these bricks and tiles? Are you planning to build a mansion?"
Zhao Dong knew that news of their house construction would soon spread throughout the village. After all, it was impossible to keep such a huge event a secret. Seeing Mrs. Zheng's expression, he calmly nodded. "Yes."
After saying that, he greeted the villagers and prepared to leave. However, Mrs. Zheng wouldn't let him go that easily.
She picked up a brick from the cart, clicking her tongue, and said, "Brother Dong, once your house is built, it will be as big as Country Gentry Wei's family's courtyard, won't it?"
Zhao Dong frowned; being a man, he didn't feel it was appropriate to argue with a woman in the street. So, he said with a fake smile, "It's nowhere near as grand as Country Gentry Wei's family's house. We're just building a few extra rooms because our family is growing."
Mrs. Zheng wanted to say more, but Shi Tou's wife, Mrs. Sun, suddenly spoke up, "Hey, Mrs. Zheng, haven't you pried enough? It's getting late, and they have work to do. Stop bothering them and getting in the way of their work. Have you no shame?"
Mrs. Zheng turned her head angrily and glared at Mrs. Sun, cursing her as a "lackey."
Shi Tou's wife snorted coldly, ignoring her. Instead, she said to Zhao Dong, "Brother Dong, you'd better hurry up and get to work. You still have to unload the bricks and tiles while there's still daylight."
"Daddy~"
At that moment, Zhao Zhitong's voice suddenly came from behind, and then several little children rushed over like a swarm.
The arrivals were, naturally, Qiao Muchen, Wei Shulan, and Zhao Yue. At school, the three little ones had heard from Zhao Zhitong that her family was going to build a house. They had even seen Zhao Zhitong's hand-drawn 'homestead layout map,' as she called it. They'd had a lively discussion about it and decided to visit Zhao Zhitong's family's construction site after school. So, when school let out, they all ran over together and happened to encounter Zhao Dong returning with the bricks and tiles.
"Auntie Sun, Auntie Qiangzi..."
When she reached Zhao Dong's side, Zhao Zhitong greeted the gossiping women one by one in a sweet, childish voice.
Then they followed Zhao Dong to their family's construction site.
Just as they left, the underlying resentment and jealousy among the women quickly escalated into open criticism and heated accusations.
Still angry about Mrs. Sun's earlier comment, Mrs. Zheng sneered sarcastically, "Mrs. Sun, you work so hard as Zhao Dong's lackey, yet they never included your husband, Zhao Shitou, in their fortune, did they?"
She continued, addressing the surrounding neighbors, "Think about it, everyone. We're all part of the same clan as Zhao Dong's family! We're one family. They made a fortune and didn't even bother to include us. Such heartless people! I tell you, some people can never be won over. Mrs. Sun, I advise you to find another family to be a lackey for."
Many people are like that; if someone they considered an equal suddenly finds success, instead of feeling happy for them, they become jealous and resentful. And indeed, after hearing Mrs. Zheng's words, many villagers felt a pang of bitterness and couldn't stop themselves from making sour comments.
Even though Mrs. Sun had always had a good relationship with Zhao Dong's family, she couldn't help but feel a little upset. However, she did not resort to making sarcastic remarks like the other women.
Mrs. Sun scoffed and retorted, "Who exactly is the lackey here? You're always fawning over Mrs. Wang, yet does her family really care about you? Are you still dreaming of her son becoming an official and helping your family? Dream on. You don't even know if they would recognize you by then."
After saying that, she left in a huff.
When she returned home, she sat down angrily at the kitchen door, sighing.
Zhao Shitou, coming back, saw his wife looking like this and asked, "What's wrong?"
Mrs. Sun sighed, pouring out her grievances like a string of beans, "Do you think Zhao Dong's family has gotten rich? Today, I saw them bringing back tens of carts of bricks and tiles. They seem to be planning to build a big mansion!"
Zhao Shitou hadn't detected the discontent in his wife's words yet and replied cheerfully, "Yeah, I always knew Zhao Dong had what it takes! Look, ever since he separated from his stepmother and her ways, he's been doing so much better!"
Seeing her husband's delighted expression for others, Mrs. Sun sighed again, discontentedly saying, "Husband, you are as close to Brother Dong as a real brother. How come he didn't include us when he made a fortune?"
Finally, Zhao Shitou noticed the problem in Mrs. Sun's words. His face darkened. "What's the matter with you? Did you hear some nonsense on the street and start believing it? I'm telling you, when you hear such things, you need to really think them through."
He moved a stool over, sat down, and asked Mrs. Sun, "Search your heart and ask yourself: how has Zhao Dong's family treated us?"
This question stumped Mrs. Sun. She couldn't help but recall past events.
Whenever their family had faced any difficulty in the past, Zhao Dong's family would send them money and items without even being asked.
When the tofu business started, Zhao Dong's family thought of them first. Zhao Shitou made a good amount of money working with Zhao Dong back then.
Moreover, Zhao Dong's family always shared their new dishes with them. Their children had even enjoyed many candies from Zhao Dong's young girl.
Furthermore, they were fortunate enough, along with Zhao Cheng and the others, to learn many numbers and characters from Zhao Zhitong. Now, her son could even write his own name.
Thinking about all this, her face turned red with shame. She couldn't believe she had been influenced by that villainous woman, Mrs. Zheng. Instantly, her eyes filled with regret.
She frankly answered, "Brother Dong's family has been very good to us."
Zhao Shitou slapped his thigh. "That's right! Zhao Dong has been incredibly good and sincere with our family. Besides, becoming rich is a matter of luck. If they include us, it's out of friendship, and if they don't, there's nothing wrong with that. Don't be influenced by some gossipy women and let your greed show, or you will hurt Zhao Dong's family's feelings!"
