Chapter 25: Chapter 25: Shadows of the Rift
The battle had ended, but the air remained heavy, thick with the lingering energy of the Rift. The ground still trembled in the aftermath of Kai's clash with his doppelgänger, the alternate version of himself that had vanished into the void.
Kai stood motionless, his hands clenched into fists. His breathing was ragged, but his mind was sharper than ever.
That thing wasn't just a Hellion.
It wasn't just a Rift-born warrior.
It was him.
"Kai…" Luna's voice cut through his thoughts, soft but urgent.
He turned to see her staring at him, concern etched into her violet eyes. She had seen the whole thing—his power, the way he fought, and most importantly, the way the Rift had responded to him.
"You saw it, didn't you?" Kai muttered, shaking the tension from his fingers. "That thing... was me."
Seraphina approached, her golden aura dimming as the energy around them settled. "It was more than that. It was a version of you who had given in completely to the Rift's call. A version that embraced its power without hesitation."
Kai scoffed, running a hand through his hair. "Great. Just what I needed—an evil twin with better posture."
Luna didn't laugh. "This isn't a joke, Kai. The Rift is reacting to you. Every time you fight, it's like it's trying to pull you deeper. And now it's creating... versions of you."
Kai exhaled slowly. "Yeah, I noticed."
Seraphina folded her arms. "The Rift doesn't do anything without reason. If it sent this version of you now, it means something bigger is coming."
Kai looked back up at the sky. The Rift still swirled above them, its dark tendrils shifting, as if it were alive.
"Then we have a problem," he muttered. "Because I don't think it's done with me yet."
The Rift's WarningFar above, deep within the black hole's core, unseen forces stirred.
A massive, throne-like structure stood at the heart of the Rift, surrounded by shifting void energy. Shadows moved like living things, whispering and twisting as a lone figure sat upon the throne.
"He resisted." The words were spoken by a figure cloaked in shadow, its form barely distinguishable from the swirling darkness around it.
Another presence stirred nearby. "Then he is more dangerous than we anticipated."
The one on the throne exhaled. Eyes burned like silver moons from beneath the hood. "Let him fight. Let him grow."
"You want him to get stronger?"
A smirk. "Of course. Because when the time comes… he will have no choice but to surrender."
The shadows shivered, and the Rift pulsed once more.
The Calm Before the StormKai's body ached, but he had learned long ago to ignore pain. Instead, he focused on preparing for what was next.
Back at the temporary command center, Luna, Seraphina, and Elias had gathered around a holographic projection of the Rift's activity.
"It's shifting," Elias muttered, adjusting his glasses. "The energy levels are fluctuating, but instead of random spikes, we're seeing... patterns."
Kai raised an eyebrow. "Patterns? You mean like, it's thinking?"
Elias nodded. "Exactly. It's almost like it's adapting. Responding to something."
Luna crossed her arms. "Or someone."
Kai rolled his eyes. "Oh, don't say it like that. Makes it sound like I'm some kind of Rift magnet."
Luna and Elias exchanged glances.
Kai groaned. "Oh, come on. You guys are seriously blaming me for this?"
Seraphina shook her head. "Not blaming you. But we can't ignore the connection anymore. You're different, Kai. You always have been. And the Rift knows it."
Kai exhaled. "Yeah, well, I'd rather not be on the Rift's VIP list."
Luna sighed. "Too late for that."
A sudden alarm blared, cutting the conversation short. The holographic map glowed red, indicating a massive energy spike.
Elias's eyes widened. "We've got incoming."
Kai cracked his knuckles. "Finally. I was getting bored."
Seraphina narrowed her eyes. "This is serious, Kai. This isn't like before. Whatever's coming… it's worse."
Luna's spear gleamed as she stepped forward. "Then we stop it. Together."
Kai smirked. "You sure you can keep up?"
Luna rolled her eyes. "Just try not to get yourself killed."
Outside, the Rift shuddered violently.
Then, the sky tore open once more.
