The Beastmaster System: God Pet begs me to evolve

Chapter 29: The Stone with the Breath of Life

"Some basics about the Black Dragon Pearl don't really need explaining. It's quite extraordinary. The starting bid is 200,000 credit points, with each bid increasing by at least 10,000," Ye Yan announced.

Kent's face showed a hint of surprise. This auction was indeed exceptional if even the Black Dragon Pearl was being offered.

The Black Dragon Pearl is a rare gem that forms within the body of a giant serpent, at least 100 feet long. This serpent is typically a royal-tier monster capable of crystallizing energy into this pearl.

Over the past few days, Kent had read some articles and watched a few monster videos, including one about the Black Dragon.

The Black Dragon is not a true dragon but a giant serpent over 100 feet in length. It rampages uncontrollably, capable of destroying entire buildings with a swipe of its tail. It usually resides in large rivers but frequently comes ashore. With low intelligence, its scales are incredibly tough, making them valuable for crafting high-quality leather armor.

The Black Dragon Pearl is usually used to brew potions that are fed to tamed beasts. A single Black Dragon Pearl can be used in hundreds of brews. After consuming the entire pearl, a beast can evolve to the Golden Rank, and its level can increase by several tiers, sometimes by as many as ten.

Hence, the Black Dragon Pearl is indeed extremely valuable.

A servant unveiled a red silk cloth, revealing a black pearl the size of a human head. It was flawless and radiated a grand aura, causing everyone in the room to feel a slight sense of unease.

"300,000," a voice from the darkness called out once the pearl was displayed.

"400,000," someone quickly raised the bid, and the bidding heated up.

"500,000."

In normal circumstances, 500,000 wouldn't even come close to the true value of the Black Dragon Pearl, even if bought on the open market.

Kent observed the frantic bidding with a neutral expression. His face twitched slightly—there was no way he could afford the Black Dragon Pearl, even if he sold everything he owned.

Soon, the price for the Black Dragon Pearl climbed to 1.35 million credit points. At that point, the bidding slowed down, as it didn't seem worthwhile to continue. After all, the pearl's value was mostly in its effect on lower-tier beasts. For higher-tier beasts, it became less effective.

Once the Black Dragon Pearl was sold, Ye Yan smiled and said, "The second item up for auction is a left eye called the Reincarnation Left Eye. It was obtained from a King-tier monster, the Reincarnation Vine. After some refining, this eye can see through fog and darkness, with a maximum range of 1,000 meters. This is a must-have for those going to the Mist Border—no more worries about wandering blind in the fog."

"The starting bid is 200,000, with a minimum increment of 10,000 credit points."

A stir rippled through the crowd. Many of the attendees were mercenary tamers, most with high rankings. The Mist Border was a frequently visited map, so functional treasures like the Reincarnation Left Eye were highly sought after.

Kent silently nodded. Fortunately, this was only the left eye from a King-tier monster. If it had been from an Emperor-tier monster, the price would have likely been several times higher due to the greater clarity and range.

After a bit of bidding, the Reincarnation Left Eye sold for 930,000 credit points.

Time passed quickly, and over an hour had gone by with Kent not placing a single bid.

At first, he had thought that with 350,000 credit points, he could at least participate in the auction, but now he realized that there were far wealthier people than him. His amount only qualified him as a "rich student."

Fortunately, not all the auction items were as expensive as the Black Dragon Pearl or the Reincarnation Left Eye. For every five items, one or two were priced higher.

The rest were mostly in the 200,000 to 300,000 credit point range. There were also several rounds of high-level meridian medicines that could strengthen and expand meridians, with three bottles priced at 100,000 credit points.

"Next, let's look at something a bit unusual," Ye Yan smiled.

The servant stepped forward and lifted a red cloth to reveal a stone about the size of a human head. It had a dull, grayish-white skin and appeared quite ordinary, with nothing particularly special about it.

Ye Yan continued, "This stone was found in the Giant Fruit Mountain Range, a place known for its many extraordinary monsters. When it was discovered, it was being struck by heavenly lightning, which struck it nine times. With each strike, a large circle of the stone shattered. Eventually, only this small piece remained. We had this stone appraised, and it seems to carry a life force within."

"As to whether it actually contains life or how it will develop, that's something for the eventual buyer to figure out." Ye Yan chuckled. "The starting bid for this item is 100,000 credit points, with a minimum increment of 10,000."

A hushed silence fell over the crowd. While everyone in the room was wealthy, most of them had clear goals, seeking items that would be directly useful to them.

Fortunately, 100,000 credit points wasn't a large sum, so some people were still willing to take a gamble on it, just in case it turned out to be something special.

"I bid 120,000," someone raised their hand.

"I bid 150,000," another followed.

At this point, Kent, his face hidden beneath his mask, showed a look of surprise.

His beast evolution system granted him the ability to read the properties of living beings. When he heard the stone contained life force, he decided to use his reading ability to see if he could identify what it was.

The result was more exciting than he expected.

Ding!

Notification: A golden-tier life form is curled inside the stone, possessing high potential and intelligence, and can be contracted.

It was a golden-tier monster, an unborn young beast—this was perfect!

A golden-tier, contractable young beast would easily be worth at least 500,000 credit points, and for a better one, the price could easily exceed a million.

While golden-tier monsters were relatively common, contractable ones were rare, especially those still in their youth.

In the monster trade market, the price of young beasts was always high. This was because they were easier to contract, and once they matured, they wouldn't easily rebel against their tamer.

Kent swallowed, feeling a surge of excitement. Just in time, he was dissatisfied with Garfield's abilities and was thinking of training a new beast.

As a tamer, there's actually no strict limit to how many beasts one can contract; it all depends on your ability and financial resources to raise them.

Otherwise, contracting more beasts would be useless—one's mental energy is limited, and it's impossible to control them all. Most importantly, the more beasts one commands, the more likely one is to suffer backlash.

Therefore, most tamers gradually raise the number of beasts they control as they grow in strength. A skilled tamer might manage two or three, and more powerful ones can handle four or five. Anything beyond that is rare.

This is because upgrading and evolving each beast requires substantial mental and financial resources. You can't just contract as many as you like.

Kent wasn't entirely clear about the full capabilities of his system, but he was confident that contracting three or four monsters would be manageable.

Since each contract slot was precious, he was determined not to make the same mistake as his past life, where he carelessly contracted just any pet cat.

This time, he would make sure the beasts he contracted had high potential so they would be easier to cultivate.

And most importantly, even if a turkey evolved, it would never become a phoenix.

Life's qualities are what they are, and one must respect objective reality and nature.
