Chapter 15: The Pendant of Fortune: A Two-Million-Dollar Mystery
After she finished speaking, she noticed the tense atmosphere downstairs and wondered what had happened.
"Mom… What's going on?"
Zhou Ruo frowned. "What watch?"
"Oh, it's the diamond watch my older brother gave me for my sixteenth birthday. He brought it back from abroad. I always kept it in the drawer of my desk, but when I went to find it just now, it was gone."
Even though Zhou Ruo was Wen Huaming's wife, she still had to be on good terms with Wen Huaming's three children from his first marriage: Wen Li'an, Wen Liming, and Wen Lichuan.
Initially, because Wen Huaming's second and third sons didn't accept her quickly, she had to live outside for two years. Even Wen Liyang, who was once an illegitimate child, had to go through a process to be recognized as part of the family.
It wasn't that the second and third young masters of the Wen family accepted her; they just grew up and were rarely at home, so they didn't care much about whether she entered the family or not.
Upon hearing Wen Xinyue's words, Zhou Ruo's expression instantly changed.
Wen Auntie emerged from the kitchen, saying, "Miss Ji has just returned, and Miss Xinyue's diamond watch has vanished. Coincidentally, Miss Ji's room on the second floor is right next to Miss Xinyue's."
"Wen Auntie, don't misunderstand. My sister isn't like that," Wen Xinyue said, startled, and quickly explained.
Recalling how Ji Chuxing had confidently thrown the bank card at her earlier, Zhou Ruo instantly understood.
Of course, she had just managed to get close to Bo Yanchen. How could he suddenly give her so much money? It must have come from somewhere else.
At this thought, Zhou Ruo became extremely angry.
"So, I brought a white - eyed wolf into the house! I said you didn't have a penny on you, how did you have the nerve to cut ties with me, and even dare to steal from the Wen family!"
"Wen Auntie, search her backpack!" Zhou Ruo sat on the sofa, turning her head away, too angry to look at Ji Chuxing.
"Mom..."
Wen Xinyue looked at Ji Chuxing and then at Zhou Ruo, seemingly frightened and unable to plead for her.
Her eyes filled with grievance: "Sister, why would you do something like this? If you liked it, you could have told me, and I would have given it to you."
"If you needed money, I would have shared my allowance with you. How could you do something like this? Mom will be so heartbroken if she finds out."
Zhou Ruo pressed her temples. "Xinyue, you don't need to say these things to her. She has ill intentions and won't understand. It's my fault for not disciplining her properly. Today, I'll teach her a lesson and make her understand what she should and shouldn't do."
Wen Xinyue, worried, urged, "Sister, apologize to Mom quickly!"
Wen Auntie added, "Miss, you are too kind. There's no need to plead for someone like her."
As she walked over to grab Ji Chuxing's backpack, there was a loud bang!
Before Wen Auntie could touch Ji Chuxing, the girl kicked her, sending her flying three meters away. Wen Auntie landed heavily at the foot of the sofa.
Ji Chuxing remained expressionless, seemingly indifferent, and glanced at the people present. "Who dares?"
"Miss Wen!" Wen Xinyue rushed over, shocked. Zhou Ruo was also stunned, more so angry. "Ji Chuxing, what are you doing? Have you no manners?"
"Shut up!"
Ji Chuxing, still expressionless, said, "One more word, and I'll hit you too."
Zhou Ruo clutched her chest, staring at Ji Chuxing in disbelief. "You, you are simply out of control!"
Wen Li'an, who had found the documents in the study, just came out and heard the commotion downstairs.
"What's going on?"
"Brother! When did you come back?" Wen Xinyue, excited, held herself back from rushing over. She then looked at Ji Chuxing, hesitating. "The watch you gave me for my sixteenth birthday is missing, and Sister..."
She bit her lip, unable to continue.
Wen Li'an frowned, understanding Wen Xinyue's words, but asked, "Do you suspect she took your watch?"
Wen Xinyue nodded. "Brother, don't be angry. Maybe she just really liked it."
Wen Li'an looked at Wen Xinyue, expressionless. "Evidence."
Wen Xinyue was taken aback.
Shouldn't her brother believe her immediately? Why was he asking for evidence?
She opened her mouth, hesitated, and finally said, "Wen Auntie said... after school, only Sister went to the second floor."
Zhou Ruo, fuming, said, "There are only a few people in the house. It's clear who took it. Li'an, rest assured, Aunt Zhou will handle this fairly. I won't protect her just because she's my daughter."
With that, she moved to take Ji Chuxing's backpack herself.
A cold, mocking voice came from the door. "What fairness! Madam Wen, you truly have a sense of justice!"
It was Bo Yanchen.
He was pushed in by Fang He, his expression cold, but his gaze softened when he saw Ji Chuxing. "Little girl, you said you didn't need me to bring you in, and now you're being bullied again?"
Ji Chuxing pouted. "I can handle it myself."
Her tone carried a hint of dissatisfaction, as if Bo Yanchen had arrived too early and interrupted her fight.
Fang He chuckled, his low, pleasant voice unexpectedly seductive, making Wen Xinyue blush.
"Come here." He gestured to Ji Chuxing.
Ji Chuxing reluctantly walked over and stood beside him, and no one dared to stop her.
Bo Yanchen's appearance surprised Wen Li'an. He knew that the second master of the Bo family from the north was recuperating in the south, but he didn't expect him to appear at the Wen household. And he seemed to be on good terms with Ji Chuxing?
But since he didn't know Ji Chuxing well, he couldn't comment.
"Second Master Bo," Wen Li'an greeted coolly.
Bo Yanchen nodded. "Young Master Wen."
Then, he turned his cold gaze to Zhou Ruo. "Is your Wen family the only wealthy one in the south? A broken watch, worth stealing by my little girl?"
Though Bo Yanchen didn't look threatening, Zhou Ruo didn't dare to argue. But having been humiliated twice today, she said stiffly, "Second Master Bo, this is a family matter of the Wen household!"
"A family matter of the Wen household? Does my little girl have the Wen surname?" He seemed to smile.
Zhou Ruo's face paled.
Ji Chuxing obediently said, "I have the Ji surname."
Bo Yanchen nodded approvingly. "Yes, the Ji surname sounds nice."
Ji Chuxing smiled, looking pleased.
Fang He sneered. "Old Ji saved my master's life. Whatever concerns Miss Ji, concerns my master. As for the watch, look, the charm on Miss Ji's backpack is worth two million."
Zhou Ruo and Wen Xinyue both paled!
Ji Chuxing: ...Thanks, next time tell me before you exaggerate.
The charm on her backpack was something Ji Chuxing had taken from a sniper's bag last night, thinking it looked nice.
Just then, a maid's urgent voice came from upstairs. "Found it! Found it! Miss Xinyue's watch is found!"
The maid, confused by the scene downstairs, handed the watch to Wen Xinyue. "We found it in Young Master's room, but... the watch is broken."
Wen Liyang, being young and temperamental, occasionally took things from Wen Xinyue's room without her saying anything.
This scene was like a slap in the face for both Zhou Ruo and Wen Xinyue.
Fang He, still expressionless, continued, "From today on, Miss Ji probably doesn't need a mother like Madam Wen anymore."
Wen Li'an frowned slightly. "Second Master Bo, this is a matter between Madam and Xiao Xing."
Was it appropriate for Bo Yanchen to intervene?
He didn't know much about what Ji Chuxing had gone through since coming to the Wen household, but Fang He had personally investigated and knew everything clearly.
Just as Ji Chuxing had come in, he received a message that Zhou Ruo was unfit to be a mother, and that was putting it mildly.
Fang He sneered. "Young Master Wen probably doesn't know what Miss Ji has gone through since coming to the Wen household."
Fang He succinctly described several events that had occurred since Ji Chuxing arrived at the Wen family, including Wen Liyang pushing Ji Chuxing into the pool and causing her to lose consciousness, and the bullying at school today, followed by Zhou Ruo's hasty apology to the bullies without proper investigation. And just now, accusing Miss Ji of theft without any evidence.
Where was the mother - daughter relationship? They were practically enemies.
In a few words, Fang He presented the facts objectively, without exaggeration or omission.
"Tigers don't eat their cubs, Madam Wen. You've truly opened my eyes. But from now on, such things won't happen. Since Miss Ji has severed ties, she will surely be happier in the future."
Wen Li'an's gaze towards Zhou Ruo was filled with disdain and coldness. Looking at the quiet girl standing beside Bo Yanchen, he felt inexplicably annoyed.
The Wen family had made her life miserable, and it was the Wen family's fault.
To be honest, he didn't like the Wen family either.
Ji Chuxing, however, showed no reaction. She even thought Fang He talked too much, making it sound embarrassing. Hmph!
"Can we leave now?" she asked Bo Yanchen.
Bo Yanchen cast a cold glance at Zhou Ruo, who didn't dare to speak. He took Ji Chuxing's hand. "Let's go. I'll take you to dinner."
Though he was in a wheelchair, his presence was powerful, like the sun and moon, enveloping everything.
"Madam Wen, remember, my little girl is under my protection and has nothing to do with the Wen family. Don't bother her. Otherwise, the Wen family can try and see the consequences."
The Wen household fell silent, and Zhou Ruo slumped onto the sofa.
Wen Xinyue, anxious, asked, "How does Sister know Second Master Bo?"
"Brother..."
Wen Li'an frowned, looking coldly at Wen Xinyue. "You're not a child anymore. Do things based on evidence. Next time, don't falsely accuse someone without proof."
With that, he left with the documents, no longer caring about the Wen household.
Wen Xinyue watched Wen Li'an leave, biting her lip.
She was the only daughter of Wen Huaming's second wife, and her relationship with the three brothers from the first wife, especially the eldest, was not particularly warm. But never before had her brother spoken to her so harshly.
"Mom... I'm sorry..." Wen Xinyue apologized.
Zhou Ruo gritted her teeth. "It's not your fault!"
