Chapter 8: The Mutant Mythril Turtle

The living baby running towards the wall was nothing more than an iron turtle. The only difference was that this iron turtle was a mutant. Of course, the fact that mutants were seen as normal monsters in the north made this normal, too.

Of course, with it being a mutant, there was no need to explain how powerful the iron turtle was, or rather, how powerful its defence was.

Neither Luke nor Callum had ever used a ballista before. In fact, they were as certain as their names that such a weapon did not exist in this world.

That was precisely why everything was so exciting for them. After all, Luke was certain that the walls could hold the iron turtle.

That was precisely why Callum quickly grabbed the ballista's handles and aimed as best as he could. Despite being a turtle, the iron turtle was moving at an enormous speed. That was what made them dangerous creatures.

A monster that never stopped once it had set its sights on a target and kept moving until it hit it, unless it died.

"Just a little more..." Callum said in a calm voice.

Snowflakes falling from the sky, the thin fog, and the deep cold. Callum paid no attention to any of it and pulled the trigger of the ballista in a single motion.

"SWIP!!"

The massive arrow on the ballista suddenly detached from the device and moved towards the iron turtle at an incredible speed.

"CHING!!!"

It was as if an explosion had occurred where the arrow met the iron turtle's shell. The snow on the ground turned to dust, and the iron turtle, already difficult to see due to the mist, had now become completely invisible.

After a short while, Callum descended the stairs, opened the passageway, and stepped outside with his sword in hand.

When the snow dust settled and only the fog remained, Callum and Luke could see that the iron turtle was dead.

A bright smile appeared on Luke's face, while Callum's expression was one of shock.

When Luke saw this expression, he tried to understand what was happening.

When Callum got close to the mutant creature, he seemed to be trying to control something. When the astonishment on his face grew even greater, he turned to Luke and shouted, "Sir, this thing is not a mutant iron turtle!"

Luke couldn't understand what that meant, so he ran down the stairs leading to the top of the wall, the rampart area, and rushed over to Callum.

What he saw caused him to have the same expression as Callum.

"Come on, get out of there?" Luke muttered.

"Sir... This is a Mutant Mithril Turtle…" Callum said, trying to stay calm but failing miserably.

"I think… the ballistae created by your gift are too powerful, sir," Callum added to his own words.

Luke shook his head up and down and then calmly said, "Gather."

The Mutant Mithril Turtle vanished, and in Luke's inventory panel, there were nearly three thousand kilograms of high-quality meat and over four hundred kilograms of mithril.

It was as if Luke's gift had transformed the mithril back into its pure form, the "ore" stage.

It was incredible.

When he looked up at one of the ballistae mounted on the walls, he smiled and realised at that moment that he had obtained a power capable of competing with high-level mages.

"We really do need a blacksmith, Callum," Luke said jokingly, then pulled out a mithril ore from his inventory and showed it to Callum.

"Your Majesty... You are holding ore in your hands that could fetch hundreds of gold pieces... It's a great way to make money... Of course, we won't find a Mithril Turtle every day, but you understand what I mean," Callum said. He was almost congratulating Luke.

Meanwhile, Luke had started walking towards the village and had shaken his head from side to side in response to Callum's words.

After entering the village, he climbed the stairs leading back to the village walls and, together with Callum, placed dozens of massive arrows next to each ballista.

This would be one of the main defences for the village.

The village currently had a population of forty-one. With the arrival of the elves, they might exceed two hundred, but that would take some time.

Luke wanted everything to be perfect and for there to be no problems with the expansion of the village.

For this, the first thing that needed to be done was to have perfect blueprints of the buildings and the entire village.

Luke had been educated in every subject since childhood, so he was very good at drawing blueprints. Although he was not an architect, he had a great deal of knowledge about the size of houses, the distribution of areas, and the creation of living spaces.

That was precisely why each blueprint had been created in detail.

The village would be protected by a hexagonal wall, and except for the passageway and the part of the village opening towards the lake, large triangular structures as long as the wall would be built on each side.

The sole reason for this was to force the enemy into a situation where there would only be two entry and exit points to the village in case of a future invasion.

In short, the village would be protected from possible invasions until it could fully develop and defend itself.

At least from human invasions.

That is, it would also be a means of protection from humans, elves, dwarves, half-humans, half-demons, pixies, and many other races.

For monsters, ballistas could be used against the less intelligent ones.

Everything was perfect.

That was precisely why Luke had arranged all the walls of the village in such a way that they would not harm the village in any way after replenishing the ballistas' arrow stocks, or rather, giving them a stock each.

Now, a massive wall had been formed, hexagonal in shape, ten metres long, and five metres thick.

The only thing left to do was to establish a solid order.
