Chapter 109: The calm before the storm
Adam wasted no time, informing Genji to prepare for a looming calamity. He advised that residents of the city located around the large portal's expected area be evacuated, as the entire zone was about to become a battleground.
He stressed the need for swift action, mentioning that Devon would soon be meeting with the elders to finalize a defense plan against the imminent threat.
Adam then teleported back home, immediately absorbing mana from his house to recover. He found Emily's parents relaxed and chatting with the elders. Adam quickly updated the elders on the situation, and the meeting for the grand defense plan was set.
An Uneasy Alliance and a Desperate Plan
The meeting began with palpable tension, resentment and grudges lingering between the creatures and the Sanctum. The elders and Devon took their respective seats. A peace treaty for this critical period was drafted and signed. Next, they moved to the heart of the matter: stopping the coming invasion.
The only way to halt the invasion, they concluded, was to disrupt the source of mana fueling the portals. This meant the Spiritual Realm itself would have to be destroyed. This could only be done once the massive portal fully opened and connected to the dimension's mana.
At that point, they could cause a mana overload, destroying the Spiritual Realm along with the portal. The immediate problem, however, was that once the dimension was destroyed, the creatures would have no place to go.
Devon addressed this, proposing that the Sanctum, facing increasing issues with rogue creatures and portals, was willing to work with them and even provide a new place for the creatures to stay.
Thus, a joint defensive and offensive strategy was forged. Casualties were inevitable, but this would be a death battle. A full-scale invasion wouldn't just destroy cities; it would annihilate the world as they knew it, with millions of lives at stake. The core issue was pushing back the invading armies long enough to destroy the main portal.
Adam volunteered. He declared that he alone would be able to withstand millions of invaders in their world. However, he would need protection to push him through the main portal, requiring cover fire to cut through the horde of monsters that would pour out.
The Calm Before the Storm
With the plan finalized, evacuation orders were broadcast across the city. Armies were deployed to move residents and cordon off the affected areas. People rushed to pack what they could, desperately trying to leave.
In less than 24 hours, most residents were evacuated, though some were still found hiding in their homes. The Sanctum acted swiftly, subduing these residents and forcibly moving them to safety.
A giant crack then appeared in the sky, a chilling red light beaming from within. More cracks spiderwebbed across the heavens, turning the entire sky a horrifying crimson. Every creature and human stood side by side, bracing themselves for the inevitable.
Each was armed, ready to unleash their full abilities, prepared to take down as many invaders as possible. The large mana core from the Spiritual Realm had been brought and placed in the middle of the battleground. Adam stood ready to set up his barrier.
Fear and nervousness gripped everyone with abilities, their fates hanging in the balance. This might be their last fight—a do-or-die moment for their world.
The cracks in the sky widened further, revealing a colossal, menacing eye peering through, scanning their world. An immense pressure radiated from the rift, leaving everyone stunned by the sheer power they were witnessing.
