Chapter 712: Attacking the Capital: Hopeless Situation

Suddenly, there was a ripple in the large market district of the capital. The air began to warp and distort.

A few patrolling demons immediately flinched when they saw this strange phenomenon and distanced themselves from the spot, watching with wary eyes.

"Something strange is happening, go quickly and report to a higher demon!" ordered one of the patrol leaders, a lesser demon with three horns on his head, whose rank was much higher than those present.

That lesser demon nodded and hastily rushed toward the nearest section of the outer wall, where most of the higher demons above Level 90 were stationed.

When the messenger left, the rest of the demons gripped their weapons tightly, eyes fixed on the space where reality continued to warp and distort.

"Dammit, this tension is killing me!" one of them complained.

"Whatever this is, can it just show itself already?"

Suddenly, a massive gate began to form in the area where the air was distorting.

At first, it was small, but it gradually expanded in all directions until it reached the height of a thirty-story building and the width of a fortress wall.

Under the anxious gazes of hundreds of demons, the Vermilion Kingdom's soldiers, Cromwell Awakened, along with thousands of undead, poured out of the giant gate.

At the lead, of course, was Nox. To his right stood the cold, ruby-eyed necromancer Eve. On his left, Adrian stood with sharp, focused eyes like a hunter studying prey.

"W-what are those?"

"What is Mistress Eve doing with humans?"

"Are they on our side?"

"Why does the army look… dead?"

Gasps and questions rippled through the demon ranks. Since the entities that had come through the massive gate had yet to make a move, the demons hesitated.

Their hesitation was mostly due to Eve's presence and the demons that stood behind her.

They didn't know if she was an ally or foe.

And because neither Number Two nor Hendrix had informed them of the recent developments, they were completely unaware that Eve—the same woman who had once conquered the capital—had now sided with the enemy.

For the next couple of minutes, more and more soldiers poured through the portal.

The demons began to wonder just how many of these strange beings remained on the other side.

They were no strangers to portal magic. After all, it was through a similar method that they had entered this realm. They knew such portals could lead across worlds.

Some time later, the large portal finally snapped shut after everyone had passed through.

"Is everyone here?" Nox asked, just to be sure.

"Yes," they all echoed simultaneously, their voices reverberating through the entire capital.

After what felt like an eternity, Nox took a step forward. Instantly, all the demons present stepped back.

Fortunately—or unfortunately—for them, that was the moment the messenger returned with the higher demon.

"Who are you?" the higher demon demanded, his voice deep and bestial, his tone heavy with impatience.

"The rightful owners of this city," Nox replied. With a flick of his wrist, an ice spear materialized out of thin air and shot toward the higher demon.

The demon's blood ran cold, his instincts screaming at him to move, but he was too slow. The spear pierced through his skull, splattering brain matter across the ground.

The once-confident higher demon collapsed in a puddle of his own blood. For several seconds, silence reigned as the surrounding demons stared in disbelief.

"Attack!" Nox shattered the silence with a mighty roar, his voice amplified by mana, shaking the entire capital.

Immediately, every demon in the city was alerted and turned toward the market district. They didn't need orders before charging toward the disturbance, bloodthirst in their eyes.

The demons in the market district were slaughtered within minutes. Before the overwhelming might of the invading force, they were no different from ants.

However, it didn't take long for more demons to arrive.

The Cromwell soldiers quickly formed ranks, locking their shields, while the undead surged forward like a wall of death. From above, archers riding atop dragons rained down arrows, killing the first wave of demons before they could get close.

Eve moved her hands quickly, summoning a massive bone golem that crashed into the demon ranks, scattering bodies in every direction. Adrian charged in headfirst, his water-forged sword flashing with every swing, cutting through flesh and armor as if they were paper.

Nox clenched his fist, eyes burning with determination as he declared, "I made a promise not to let the same thing happen to this kingdom as it did to the Dragon Realm… and I'll make sure to see it through!"

In the noble Silver Family mansion, which served as the residence for all top-ranking demons and Flaming Rose agents, Number Two's face paled the moment he heard the roar.

"That voice… he's here."

Hendrix didn't panic like Number Two. Instead, a grin spread under his mask as he exhaled. "Finally."

Then he vanished. Number Two frowned as he watched him go.

"With Eve siding with the enemy and Noir currently away, it'll be tough," he muttered, the frown on his face deepening. "I just hope we can hold out until he returns."

Buzz. Buzz.

The communication crystal in his pocket vibrated twice. He answered, and a voice reported, "Sir, at least five hundred thousand enemies have been spotted in the market district."

Silence.

"Sir, are you still there?" the voice called.

No response.

"Sir?!"

"Sir?!?"

After several seconds, Number Two finally exclaimed in shock, "F-five h-hundred? What the fuck?!"

"Yes, sir. Humans, undead, dragons, and strange spectral beasts!" the voice replied grimly.

The combined forces of the demons and Flaming Rose numbered only around three hundred thousand. How could they fend off an army almost twice their size?

For the first time since the beginning of this invasion, Number Two felt truly hopeless.
