Chapter 629: Chapter 631: The Situation in Gotham
"Tony, can you make a life monitoring device for them and a repulsion locator? If one of their life signs suddenly starts to fade, forcefully separate them. Will that be difficult?" Robert pointed to Hancock and Mary, asking Tony Stark.
At this moment, Robert's proposed solution was something Mary had mentioned before. However, previously, neither Mary nor Hancock could detect the changes in Hancock's body before an incident occurred. Now that Robert had discovered these changes in Hancock's body, this method seemed feasible.
"Are you underestimating me? You may be great at fighting, but science is my specialty. This little gadget is a piece of cake for me!" Tony Stark replied arrogantly, lifting his head before turning to enter the lab. A short while later, he emerged with two small wristbands, handing them to Hancock and Mary.
Just as Robert doubted whether these small wristbands could effectively repel Hancock and Mary's bodies, their bodies suddenly flew in opposite directions, directly out of the Avengers base.
"What's going on?" Hancock, caught off guard as his body flew away, couldn't react immediately. Even though he knew Robert's plan and the function of the wristband, the loss of control over his body was highly disorienting for him.
However, soon enough, Hancock felt a surge of power within him as he distanced himself from Mary. His superpowers returned.
"Crash!" Just as Hancock stopped, a giant boulder fell from a nearby mountain, striking his head and causing severe injuries despite his recently restored superpowers.
Perhaps Hancock's curse had a dark sense of humor; earlier, a hammer hit his head, causing memory loss. Now, a boulder seemed intent on turning him into an idiot, even if it couldn't kill him.
Fortunately, although Hancock was not as strong as when he first met Robert, he had become extraordinary again. While the boulder broke his defense, it wasn't enough to kill him. With his abilities restored, Hancock quickly recovered from his injuries, and his aura steadily increased.
Robert observed everything Hancock experienced. He watched the boulder fall without intervening, wanting to see if his plan would succeed. After all, if Hancock couldn't recover on his own, Robert could save him in an instant.
"It seems that as long as Hancock's aura drops to a critical point, he encounters unexpected events, which are entirely random. If he were still in the Avengers base, he wouldn't have been hit by the boulder..." Robert muttered as he watched Hancock's injuries heal.
"Hmm... not quite! If his curse is strong enough, a meteorite might just crash down on him. We've seen meteorites before. His curse is still difficult to trace, as if it's fully integrated with his abilities."
"At least they can stay together without worrying about losing their lives..." Tony Stark, who was floating nearby and watching, suddenly chuckled, "But I still pray for him in my heart, hoping he doesn't face an incident at a critical moment and get forcibly separated..."
Hearing Tony Stark's joke, Robert's mouth twitched slightly. He could almost see Hancock's awkward situation if such a thing happened, making it hard for him to suppress his laughter.
"Maybe it's already happened..." Tony Stark stroked his chin, rebutting his own statement as Robert struggled not to laugh. "They probably just had to stop for some unexpected reason before."
"What interruption? What are you talking about?" Hancock flew over as Tony Stark finished speaking. His head injury had completely healed. This was the first time Hancock successfully overcame his curse's unexpected event, so he was quite excited.
"Oh, I was saying we were going to invite you to join the Avengers, but then the Saiyan took you to Europe, so it was interrupted..." Tony Stark lied without a change in expression.
"No problem. Before we came back, we agreed with the Saiyan to join the Avengers!" Hancock smiled and shook his head, having learned that the Saiyan was Robert's title. He looked at Tony Stark and said, "From now on, we're a team. I hope you won't mind our inconsistent powers."
"Don't worry. I'll make new suits for you and ensure you stay separated during missions!" Tony Stark glanced at the wristbands and said softly, "This wristband is just a first-generation product. There will be updates. I'll also help monitor your bodies, maybe enabling you to enhance your powers faster when separated or retain more strength when together."
"Really? That's great!" Hancock became even more excited upon hearing Tony Stark's promise.
"Then I'll leave them to you. I'll take Kara and go!" Seeing Tony Stark and Hancock getting along well, Robert had no intention of interrupting. Tony Stark had promised to take care of the rest, and it was no longer Robert's responsibility.
Besides, Tony Stark's promise seemed like a distant dream. Tony Stark had too many unfinished projects—upgrading his own armor, solving Peter Parker's venom problem, researching the defects of vampires and werewolves from the dark dimension, and studying a vibranium-like substance...
Considering this, Hancock and Mary's problem might be postponed indefinitely, just like Peter Parker's venom issue, as long as they didn't encounter any immediate problems.
"Remember not to say things you shouldn't!" Robert's voice echoed in Hancock's mind as he left the Avengers base with Kara, causing Hancock to pause. But seeing Kara leaving with Robert, Hancock immediately understood.
Although this kind of secrecy didn't align with Hancock's romantic and value beliefs, he thought of Robert's power and his help. Ultimately, Hancock obediently chose to comply.
"Hey, when you went to Europe with the Saiyan, did anyone follow you?" After Kara and Robert disappeared, Tony Stark quietly asked Hancock while helping him and Mary with their research.
"No, it was just the Saiyan and me until we found Mary..." Hancock looked at Tony Stark in confusion and then at Mary with affection.
"Really?" Tony Stark eyed Hancock suspiciously, then looked at Mary. "You didn't meet anyone else?"
"We did run into a guy who hit on me, and he got into a conflict with Hancock. Then the Saiyan seemed to scare him crazy..." Mary didn't understand why Hancock hid Diana's existence, but their long-time understanding made her stand by Hancock, nodding seriously.
"Is that so? Then why was she angry?" Tony Stark felt a bit puzzled. Hancock and Mary's performances were perfect. If they were lying, Tony thought they deserved Oscars, making him wonder why Kara had reacted that way earlier. "Maybe Robert secretly contacted someone and was overheard by her? I'd better keep my mouth shut..."
"Hmph! Tony is quietly asking about Diana again!" Meanwhile, back at home after leaving the Avengers base, Kara and Robert enjoyed their time together while the Kent parents were away. Kara, annoyed, mentioned Tony's snooping.
"It was my fault. Diana contacted me to ask about the previous unlucky incidents..." Robert explained softly, holding Kara. "I'll do whatever you want next. How about that?"
"Hmph! Let's see how much energy you have, making such big promises! Come on, get inside!" Kara pouted and pulled Robert into the house.
"Is it really over?" Meanwhile, in Gotham, Batman looked at the collected data, still uneasy.
The previous string of unlucky incidents had a massive impact on Gotham, possibly more significant than any other city.
Other cities mostly experienced natural disasters, with few man-made calamities. But Gotham was different. While it had many natural disasters, they paled compared to the man-made ones.
Gotham's numerous criminals and potential offenders exacerbated the situation. As the unlucky events unfolded, Gotham's criminals went wild, and many ordinary people fell into crime in response.
Ordinary people, usually helpless during extraordinary events, could only pray at home for safety. But this time was different. The unlucky incidents caused severe casualties, yet the dangers weren't visible.
Thus, Gotham descended into chaos. Even with the Icarus mask, Batman couldn't handle all the unlucky incidents. The Shadow Warriors weren't strong enough to resist all of them, and they too faced some unlucky events.
This situation left Batman exhausted. Even previous powerful foes hadn't pressured him as much as these intangible unlucky incidents.
If it weren't for Alfred monitoring Clark and Robert, who were busy rescuing people worldwide, Batman would have already called them for help.
"It seems to be over, sir," Alfred, equally tired, said softly. "Globally, the Avengers have ceased operations. Only Superman is still active. Although natural disasters have stopped, human-caused ones haven't, especially in Gotham. Sir, perhaps you should awaken the fear in those people..."
"No need. Just round them up for the police. Immediately fund the expansion of the police department and prisons..." Batman waved his hand. With natural disasters gone, human-caused problems were relatively easier to solve. However, Batman wasn't planning to act because he was concerned about something else.
Previously, after the Joker left Gotham and was controlled by Mephisto, the Joker's legend faded until one day, after Arkham Asylum was rebuilt, the Joker returned and wreaked havoc in Gotham.
This Joker looked identical to the previous one and behaved similarly, but Batman suspected he was just a poor imitator committing crimes as the Joker.
Batman personally captured him, only to find that this Joker seemed to be the original. His behavior and records matched, yet Batman still felt something was off.
During the unlucky incidents, the Joker showed no signs of acting, making Batman believe the Joker was planning something big, prompting Batman to prepare in advance.
