Chapter 620: Chapter 621: Hard-Pressed and Frequent Incidents
"It seems like we're really the ones having bad luck?" Kara winked at Robert with a smile after securing the billboard. "But, this level of bad luck might be dangerous for ordinary people, but it doesn't seem to affect us much, does it?"
"I don't know either. I haven't sensed any kind of power, whether it's spiritual or material energy..." Robert scratched his head, looking at Kara with a helpless expression. "Let's contact Tony and see if they're experiencing something similar."
Confused by their recent encounters, Robert couldn't detect any supernatural forces acting on him or Kara, making it seem like they were genuinely just unlucky. Even the waitress from earlier had been caught up in it. Still, Robert felt that there had to be more to it.
Soon, Robert and Kara were flying towards the Avengers' base, unaware that similar unlucky incidents were happening to countless people worldwide. Some only suffered minor scrapes and bumps—those were the lucky ones. The unlucky ones either died on the spot, sometimes gruesomely, or vanished without a trace.
Clark, who had been assisting official agencies alongside the Avengers, noticed some of these unfortunate events. However, even with his abilities, he couldn't be everywhere at once. These incidents happened without any warning, leaving Clark unable to preemptively respond, especially when he wasn't on the scene.
"Jarvis! Investigate what's happening!" Clark, unable to handle the situation alone, asked Tony Stark for help. Receiving messages from both Clark and Robert, Tony's expression turned serious as he quickly set Jarvis to work.
"Sir, based on preliminary estimates, there have been over a hundred thousand significant unlucky incidents worldwide. These are the more severe cases; those causing minor injuries haven't been tallied yet. However, it's expected that those numbers will be even higher," Jarvis reported, giving Tony a chilling assessment. Tony was momentarily overwhelmed by the scale of the issue.
In past extraordinary events, even widespread incidents hadn't caused this many casualties. This sudden spate of unlucky events, resulting in such high mortality, with no signs of a pattern or warning, seemed too random to be natural. But the sheer volume and severity indicated something supernatural at work.
"Jarvis, try to find any common factors among these incidents!" Tony ordered, attempting to discern a pattern from the chaos.
"Understood, sir..." As Jarvis processed the data, an alarm suddenly sounded. "Warning! An asteroid has entered Earth's atmosphere!"
"What?!" Tony's face turned pale as he quickly donned his suit and took to the skies. He contacted Robert and Clark while questioning Jarvis, "How could an asteroid get this close without any prior warning from satellites or observatories?"
"The asteroid had somehow avoided all observation points, as if it appeared out of nowhere. The probability of it not being detected by any satellite or observatory is about one in 132 billion. Yet, it happened..." Jarvis explained, confirming Tony's suspicion that these random events were not natural.
"Given that we've had multiple incidents with a one in fifteen billion chance, an asteroid impact without warning isn't that surprising. But whoever's behind this better watch out if I find them!" Tony's eyes flashed with anger as he soared into the sky. The sight of the fiery asteroid hurtling towards Earth made his blood run cold.
Tony had experienced numerous disasters and battles but facing a potential extinction event was different. The visual impact of the approaching asteroid, trailing flames, was far more terrifying than any threat he had previously faced, even more so than Robert's Kamehameha wave.
"Gulp!" Swallowing nervously, Tony steadied himself and began charging his reactor. Though uncertain if he could stop the asteroid, he aimed to at least slow it down, hoping to minimize the damage.
"Whoosh!" Tony's energy blast hit the asteroid, dispersing the flames and revealing a dark, metallic core. Jarvis quickly analyzed it.
"Sir, the asteroid's metal composition is very similar to Vibranium. It might be a related metal, but further analysis is needed..." Jarvis reported as Tony continuously poured energy into the asteroid, trying to halt its descent.
Hearing this, Tony felt no joy. Despite the potential value of a Vibranium-like asteroid, he knew the metal's properties too well. Destroying it with conventional means was nearly impossible.
"Whoosh!" As Tony worried, Robert and Kara flew up to join him.
Robert and Kara had been en route to the Avengers' base to discuss the situation when Tony's alert redirected them to the asteroid.
"Whoa! That's a big one!" Robert exclaimed, seeing the approaching asteroid. "This bad luck seems even worse than I thought."
With that, Robert unleashed a Kamehameha wave, though it only chipped away at the asteroid's surface without significantly impacting its core.
"Be careful. This asteroid's composition is very similar to Vibranium. Destroying it won't be easy," Tony warned.
"Oh? Is that so? Do you still want this thing?" Robert asked, smiling at Tony.
"Huh? If we can keep it, sure..." Tony replied instinctively, but Robert had already vanished.
"Snap!" Robert appeared under the asteroid, placing a hand beneath it and exerting his power. His aura surged, and the descending asteroid was momentarily suspended in balance.
The sight left Tony stunned. He knew Robert was strong, but seeing him lift an asteroid was something else entirely. It was like watching an ant lift a skyscraper—you couldn't see the ant, just the floating building.
"Where should I put it?" Robert's voice snapped Tony out of his daze.
"Um... place it near the base for now. We'll deal with it after this crisis is over," Tony decided.
The asteroid was soon placed behind the Avengers' base, ready for further study once the current situation was under control. For now, the priority was understanding the sudden wave of unlucky events.
Tony had also contacted Clark, but Clark couldn't join them. He was already overwhelmed.
Clark fully grasped the meaning of being stretched thin. This crisis was far more severe than any previous invasion by other dimensions' creatures or demons.
After repeatedly intervening, Clark had Lana send the Kents and Danvers families to the Savage Land, where Jor-El could watch over them. Lana then returned to assist Clark, easing some of his burden.
"So, it's not just us being unlucky; people all over the world are having bad luck?" Robert frowned after hearing Tony's and Clark's reports. He began recalling recent events.
"Could it be related to that disappearing light?" Robert soon connected the dots to the light that vanished after Lucifer was expelled by Earth's dimensional power. He suspected Lucifer or that light might be behind the current crisis, as there were no other likely culprits.
"I'll have Constantine investigate. Meanwhile, everyone, keep moving. It looks like none of us can afford to rest," Robert said, nodding at Kara before disappearing.
Kara and Tony began their respective tasks. The Avengers' base was empty, with all hands on deck handling the crisis. Even Tony's various suits were in action, but compared to the widespread unlucky events, their numbers were insufficient.
Official agencies, after some internal squabbles, also realized the scope of the crisis. But if the Avengers couldn't handle these random supernatural events, the officials stood no chance. Their trump cards were useless against such pervasive bad luck.
Many agency operatives, being ordinary people, fell victim to these events, adding to the chaos and frustration among officials.
In a street in Los Angeles, a couple was walking arm in arm, enjoying their day. Suddenly, they heard a commotion from a nearby house.
"You rotten woman, I'm going to kill you today!"
"No! Please, let me explain. I didn't cheat because of you!"
"Bullshit! What are you saying?!"
Eavesdropping on gossip is a natural human trait. Hearing the argument, the couple stopped, trying to catch more of the conversation.
"Crash!" At that moment, a hammer shattered a window and flew out, hitting the man squarely on the forehead. Blood gushed as he collapsed with a gaping wound.
