Chapter 431: Chapter 431: Batman and Tohru
In the hospital, Peter Parker watched as the doctors examined the comatose person, but the doctors found nothing unusual. All the person's vital signs were normal, as if they were simply sleeping.
However, it was clear that after being brought to the hospital and undergoing numerous tests, even the deepest sleeper should have awakened by now. But this comatose person showed no reaction at all.
This made Peter Parker, who initially thought it was a common occurrence, start to suspect that he might be dealing with something extraordinary. One person suddenly falling asleep on the street might not seem very dangerous, but if the number of sleeping people increased, it could become a significant disaster.
After all, not everyone falls asleep in a safe place. Drivers of various vehicles could cause accidents, and pedestrians could be in danger if they suddenly fell asleep while crossing the street.
"Sorry, Mr. Spider-Man, but we couldn't find anything wrong. If we can't find anything here, it's unlikely other places will either. You should notify his family to take him home," the doctor advised Peter Parker. The hospital costs were high, and it was unclear who this comatose person was. Continuing the examination and treatment would be expensive.
"Doctor! Doctor! Another person who fell asleep has been brought in. Should we check him?" Before Peter Parker could respond, a nurse shouted, bringing in the second comatose person.
This person had been brought in much slower than the first. It was only because Peter Parker had brought in the first one that others followed suit and brought in the second. Peter had set an example.
"There's definitely something wrong here!" Peter Parker's suspicions were confirmed. He quickly contacted JARVIS. "JARVIS, are there other cases of people falling into comas like this?"
"One moment…" JARVIS indeed had records of such cases, but they were related to S.H.I.E.L.D. and other official organizations. Peter Parker had the clearance to know but needed Tony Stark's permission first.
"What? Ordinary people are experiencing the same comatose state?" Tony Stark's expression changed when he received JARVIS's report. He had ignored these incidents previously because they only affected official entities and didn't disrupt the lives of ordinary people.
But now it was different. Ordinary people were suddenly falling into comas, and Peter Parker had encountered two cases in a row. This indicated that whoever was targeting official entities might now be targeting ordinary people.
"JARVIS! Gather all the data on the comatose cases and see if there are similar cases in other places besides these two in New York!" Tony Stark quickly issued commands. He understood the potential threat of this ability.
Although its destructive power might not seem high, this constant threat could bring immense fear to society. It was like countless venomous snakes lurking in the dark, ready to bite at any moment. If this news spread, society would be thrown into chaos.
Tony Stark needed to investigate and eliminate this threat.
"Sir, the investigation is complete. It's not just New York; most cities have reported comatose individuals. Usually, there are no more than two in close proximity, and the others are far apart…" JARVIS reported back quickly.
"However, in cities without reported cases, it's possible they haven't been discovered yet."
"There are a few in every place. How cautious! Are they afraid of being discovered? If Peter hadn't come across this, they might have succeeded!" Tony Stark's eyes gleamed with a cold light. "Bring the latest cases to my private hospital. I need to study them. Also, monitor the entire city and hack into S.H.I.E.L.D. and other agencies' databases to find out what's causing these comas!"
"Yes, sir!" JARVIS responded swiftly. Meanwhile, Peter Parker, now aware of more coma cases, grew serious. He took the two comatose individuals to Tony Stark's private hospital and continued his patrols.
What Tony Stark and Peter Parker didn't know was that someone else had noticed the coma cases. It wasn't Clark or Robert, but Gotham's Dark Knight, Batman.
In Gotham, shadow soldiers had appeared, consuming two shadows. However, before they could leave, they were surrounded.
Yes, surrounded. Shadow warriors encircled the shadow soldiers, glaring at them with unfriendly expressions.
The meeting between the two different shadow armies was tense. This was the territory of the shadow warriors, and the intruding shadow soldiers wouldn't be let off easily.
When Batman realized this was another shadow army, he saw a chance to find another shadow mask!
If Batman could obtain another shadow mask, his arsenal would become even more powerful. Moreover, the other shadow mask's owner was clearly up to no good. Batman had to seize this power and prevent it from harming ordinary people.
Under Batman's command, the shadow warriors quickly attacked the shadow soldiers, trying to subdue them and trace back to Tohru's location.
However, Batman didn't expect the initially trembling shadow soldiers to suddenly explode with power. They grew larger and more powerful, attacking the encircling shadow warriors.
The shadow armies were now under different masters. Even when they belonged to the same dark dimension, the shadow soldiers rarely won any battles due to their initially weak state and lack of resources.
But on Earth, after consuming enough shadows, the shadow soldiers' individual strength could now crush any other shadow army. The current shadow soldier displayed this terrifying power!
Facing dozens of shadow warriors, a single shadow soldier tore them all apart. However, the shadow soldier couldn't consume the shadow warriors' shadows or gain strength from them; otherwise, it would become even more powerful!
"What's going on?" Batman noticed the situation with surprise. He had encountered various shadow armies before and believed they were all similar in strength. This scene of one crushing many was unprecedented.
"Icarus? What's going on?" Batman realized his understanding of the dark dimension and shadow armies was insufficient. Several shadow army leaders had fallen, and his priority for them had decreased.
Recently, the Joker, thought to be gone, had reappeared in Gotham. However, Batman noticed this Joker, though equally insane and wearing the same makeup, wasn't the same as before.
This new Joker's abilities and threat level weren't inferior to the original. After much effort, Batman had finally sent him to Arkham Asylum for the first time.
Now, just after dealing with the new Joker, another crisis loomed. This one seemed to extend beyond Gotham, making Batman vigilant, especially after witnessing the shadow soldiers' power.
"The shadow soldiers are indeed the most unique among us…" General Icarus sighed and explained how shadow soldiers grew stronger by consuming shadows. Batman's expression turned grim.
Like Tony Stark, Batman instantly understood the danger of this ability. Shadow soldiers could be endless. If the mastermind were truly insane, they could potentially consume the shadows of most people on Earth.
"Whoosh!" After hearing General Icarus's explanation, Batman donned the Icarus mask, disappearing from sight.
He reappeared before the shadow soldier, who, after killing the shadow warriors, was about to leave. Batman summoned more shadow warriors, not to defeat but to hold the shadow soldier.
"Roar!" The large shadow soldier, nearly the size of a car, roared upon seeing Batman. It charged, destroying the shadow warriors around it.
"Buzz!" But then, dark energy surged around the shadow soldier, binding it in place.
The shadow soldier felt the dark energy, similar to its own, but it couldn't control it. Under Batman's control, it lost its freedom.
Binding the shadow soldier was just the start. Batman tried to use the dark energy to trace back to Tohru's location.
However, the process wasn't smooth. As Batman's dark energy infiltrated the shadow soldier, an equally strong dark force severed the connection, causing the shadow soldier to dissipate into black mist. Batman lost the trail.
"How decisive, was he prepared?" Batman muttered, staring into the darkness. "At least I know he's not in or near Gotham…"
"This means he's operating globally, discreetly, which is even more dangerous!"
While Batman pondered how to stop Tohru, Tohru himself frowned. He hadn't expected someone else to possess the mask's power.
Unlike Batman, who couldn't pinpoint Tohru's location, Tohru knew exactly where Batman was.
"Gotham? The dark city lives up to its name!" Tohru glanced toward Gotham and marked it off his list. He saw no need to clash with Batman here. Even though his shadow soldiers were now stronger, there was no special advantage in Gotham. Fighting Batman would be counterproductive.
Tohru decided to avoid Gotham and nearby cities, preventing Batman from finding any clues to his whereabouts.
