Chapter 52: (52) Head Of The Potter Family
The old Potter mansion was very large, but Lombard had managed the manor in an orderly manner, with nothing appearing messy at all.
Ian listened to Lombard's introduction while looking around and nodded to himself in approval.
This house-elf is really good. Look how well he manages the manor.
"Lombard, are you the only house-elf in the family?" Ian asked as they walked.
"Master Ian, in addition to Lombard, the Potter family has eleven other house-elves," Lombard answered truthfully. "But they were all sent by Lombard to inspect the Potter family's businesses, so they are not in the manor."
Ian smiled and nodded. "It seems that you're their boss."
"Master Ian, Lombard is responsible for managing all the house-elves in the Potter family." Lombard scratched his head and said a little bashfully, "They all listen to Lombard very much."
"Well, not bad." Ian patted Lombard's shoulder. "Keep up the good work."
"Master Ian praised Lombard! Lombard is so happy!"
Lombard said excitedly. "It is Lombard's honor to serve the Potter family!"
Looking at the ecstatic house-elf in front of him, Ian couldn't help but feel a bit helpless.
By this point, the tour of the manor was nearly complete. Ian glanced at the time and estimated that it was about right to move on. He turned to Lombard and said, "Lombard, take Harry and me to the study. We need to sort out the family business."
"Yes, Master Ian!"
Lombard agreed immediately and led Ian and Harry to the study.
The study was located at the end of the second floor. Ian and Harry followed Lombard into the room and saw that it was filled with books and various filing cabinets.
"Master Ian, here is all the information regarding the Potter family's industries,"
Lombard said, pointing to one of the filing cabinets. "Lombard has sorted everything by industry type. Master Ian and Master Harry can check it at any time."
Ian nodded, walked over to the filing cabinet, picked up a document, and began flipping through it.
Seeing this, Harry followed suit, picking up a document to review.
Lombard stood quietly aside, waiting for Ian and Harry's instructions.
After a long while, Ian put down the document in his hand and turned to look at Lombard.
"Lombard, from now on, you will assist me and Harry in managing the Potter family's business. Is there a problem?" Ian asked in a serious tone.
Lombard immediately stood up and answered firmly, "No problem! Master Ian! Lombard will definitely do it!"
Looking at the determined house-elf in front of him, Ian nodded with satisfaction.
"But, Master Ian, you and Master Harry are back now, so we need to choose the head of the Potter family," Lombard said seriously. "Originally, Master James divided the family property into two, but there are some things that only the head of the family can own."
"What are they?" Ian asked curiously.
"For example, the title deed of the old Potter house," Lombard replied, "and some heirlooms of the Potter family, and most of the corporate shares."
"Oh, only the head of the family can own it?" Ian raised his eyebrows slightly. "Then who is the head of the family between me and Harry?"
"Master James did not designate the head of the family," Lombard replied. "So, Lombard has been keeping the title deed and heirlooms of the Potter house."
"However, the portrait of the old master is still here, and the old master can designate the head of the family," Lombard suddenly thought of something and added. "The old master is Master James' father, that is, the grandfather of the two young masters."
Ian immediately became interested. "Oh? Where is the portrait of the grandfather? Take us to see it."
"Master Ian, Master Harry, please follow Lombard," Lombard said, turning and walking out of the study.
Ian and Harry looked at each other and followed.
Under Lombard's leadership, Ian and Harry came to a room on the third floor.
Lombard gently pushed the door open, then respectfully stepped aside and made a gesture of invitation to Ian and Harry. "Master Ian, Master Harry, please come in."
Ian and Harry walked in and saw many portraits of wizards hanging on the walls in the center of the room.
Ian guessed that these were probably the successive heads and their spouses of the Potter family.
"Hello, ancestors," Ian said, pulling Harry to bow to the portraits.
Then he introduced himself, "I am Ian Potter, and this is my brother Harry Potter. We are the children of James Potter and Lily Potter."
After hearing Ian and Harry's self-introduction, the portraits became visibly excited.
"James' children? They've grown so much!"
"These two kids have the blood of our Potter family, no doubt about it."
"The older one looks more like James, and the younger one resembles Lily."
The portraits began chattering all at once, creating a cacophony that left Ian and Harry slightly overwhelmed. Despite their irritation, the brothers stood patiently, waiting for the portraits to settle down.
After what felt like an eternity, the room finally quieted.
"Ancestors, Harry and I are here to see our grandfather," Ian addressed the portraits respectfully. "May I ask which one of you is our grandfather?"
"I am your grandfather," a voice called out. The speaker was a portrait with a face bearing a striking resemblance to James. "I am Fleamont Potter."
Ian and Harry turned to the source of the voice and saw a portrait in the corner of the wall. It depicted an older wizard with white hair and a serious expression.
"Hello, Grandfather," Ian and Harry said in unison, bowing deeply before Fleamont's portrait.
"Good, good," Fleamont said, smiling warmly at the two. "James' children look strong. Our Potter family indeed has a bright future."
Hearing Fleamont's praise, Ian and Harry couldn't help but smile.
"But since you've come to see me, I assume there's a specific reason?"
Fleamont asked kindly, his eyes softening as he looked at his grandsons.
"Yes, Grandfather," Ian replied. He proceeded to explain, "Lombard told us that Harry and I need to decide who will become the head of the family to take over the Potter family's business. So, we came to ask for your guidance."
"So that's it," Fleamont nodded slightly, his gaze carefully sweeping over his two grandsons. "Do you two have any thoughts?"
"Grandfather, I think Ian is more suitable to be the head of the family than me." Harry suddenly said. "Ian is smarter than I am, and he's more responsible too."
Ian turned his head sharply, looking at Harry in surprise. "Harry..."
Sure enough, Harry's soft-hearted and selfless nature shone through!
The saintly older brother wouldn't even dream of competing for the family property with his poor younger sibling.
"Ian, listen to me," Harry said firmly, meeting Ian's gaze. "As the older brother, it's my duty to look after you. Besides, I really have no interest in managing a business."
"But, Harry, you are the eldest son in the family..." Ian began, feigning reluctance.
Didn't Harry understand the rules of succession?
Even Zhao Kuangyin, who ascended the throne, famously offered it up three times before accepting. Ian had to at least go through the motions of modesty before "reluctantly" taking on the mantle.
However, before Ian could finish his scripted refusal, Fleamont interrupted, his tone decisive: "Enough. There's no need for either of you to refuse. I have made my decision."
Both brothers turned to Fleamont's portrait, anticipation clear in their eyes.
"I have decided that Ian will be the head of the family!"
Fleamont declared with gravity. He fixed his gaze on Ian.
Damn! Is this really happening!?
"I trust you to lead our Potter family to a more glorious future."
"Yes, Grandfather!"
Ian replied, immediately bowing deeply to Fleamont's portrait, his face calm but triumphant. "I will do my best to fulfill the duties of head of the family and ensure the Potter family lives up to your expectations."
Lombard, standing quietly at the side, smiled as he watched this exchange.
The old master had made his choice, and Lombard felt reassured. He was certain Master Ian was the right choice for the role.
In the process of getting along just now, Lombard clearly felt that between the two brothers, Master Ian, the younger brother, was the dominant one.
Whether he was instructing Lombard to do something or facing the portraits of the ancestors of the Potter family, Master Ian was very calm and imposing.
And Master Harry was more shy and almost obedient to his younger brother.
Although Master Ian was not the eldest son of the family, he was obviously more suitable to be the head of the family than Master Harry in terms of character and ability.
"Lombard will definitely listen to Master Ian!" Lombard thought silently in his heart.
