Chapter 51: (51) Old Potter House
Along the way, Harry seemed very excited, peppering Dumbledore with questions about the Potters.
Dumbledore answered every question patiently, sharing stories not only about Lily and James during their Hogwarts years but also about their lives after graduation.
Ian listened silently, marveling at how Dumbledore could easily pass as an emotional guru. What a waste that he didn't write a book on relationships.
Before long, the three of them arrived at Godric's Hollow.
Godric's Hollow was a quaint semi-wizarding settlement, its centerpiece being a small square with a war monument-like structure in the middle.
"Professor Dumbledore, is that...?" Harry's voice was choked as he pointed at the monument, his eyes red.
Ian turned his gaze to where Harry was pointing. The monument wasn't just a plain memorial—it was a statue of four figures.
A man with messy hair and glasses, a woman with long flowing hair and a kind face, and two baby boys cradled in their parents' arms.
"Those are your parents, James and Lily," Dumbledore said softly. "And the two baby boys are you and Ian."
Harry walked toward the statue, his steps cautious. He gently brushed away fallen leaves to reveal an inscription beneath the figures.
"The last enemy to be eliminated is death."
Ian looked at Harry's tearful face, sighed heavily in his heart, and then thought of Dumbledore who was still peeping from the side, and his heart was inexplicably shuddered.
Damn! Damn, tears come out! I'm telling you to fall! Damn eyes! Quick, turn a little red!
A few seconds later, Ian walked to Harry with slightly red eyes and said in a hoarse voice: "Harry, death is not the end, but oblivion is... As long as we don't forget them, they will continue to live in our hearts..."
"..Ian." Harry wiped a tear and looked at Ian and said, "Because you are here, I don't feel that I am alone. Mom and Dad are gone, but we still have each other."
Ian patted Harry's shoulder: "Yes, you will never be alone, Harry"
After all, I am the intangible cultural heritage left to you by James and Lily.
Dumbledore looked at the two brothers in front of him, his blue eyes filled with affection.
"Alright, children," he said with a gentle smile, "James and Lily would be very proud to see you like this now."
He gestured for them to follow. "Let's go. It's time to visit the Old Potter mansion."
Ian and Harry quickly wiped their tears and followed Dumbledore. Along the way, Dumbledore pointed out various scenic spots and shared fascinating tidbits about the wizarding world, which the brothers listened to with rapt attention.
Before long, they arrived at the Potter mansion.
"Wow, it's so big!"
Ian looked at the huge manor in front of him in shock.
He knew that the Potter family was rich, but he never thought that they would be so rich! Ian sighed silently in his heart, and then followed Dumbledore into the manor.
The furnishings in the manor were also very luxurious.
That fucking Voldemort!
Ian thought as he looked around.
This is the life I was supposed to have. Instead, that noseless motherfucker turned me from a young master into a poor little orphan!
"Who is it! How dare you trespass into the Potter manor!"
Just as Ian was complaining, an angry voice suddenly came.
Ian was startled, immediately looked towards the source of the sound, and then saw a house-elf standing in front of the gate.
The house-elf had big ears, a big nose like a bat's wing, protruding eyeballs, pupils as big as tennis balls, and was so skinny that he looked like a little monkey.
His hands and feet were very long, and his limbs seemed to be out of proportion with his body.
"Lombard." Dumbledore smiled and looked at the house-elf.
Lombard, who was originally furious, saw Dumbledore and suddenly widened his eyes: "Oh! Professor Dumbledore! It's you! You are with... Ah.."
Before Lombard could say another word, his eyes fell on Ian and Harry. His tone turned even more ecstatic.
"Masters! It's Master Harry! Master Ian!" Lombard shrieked, his entire body trembling with excitement. "The young masters look exactly like the late Master James and Madam Lily! Oh! Merlin's beard! Lombard is going to faint!"
Ian and Harry: "…"
Is this how house-elves are supposed to greet their masters?
"Lombard," Dumbledore said gently, looking at the overly excited house-elf, "Harry and Ian have just returned. You're scaring them."
Realizing his behavior, Lombard immediately smacked his forehead in frustration and began hitting himself hard. "Bad Lombard! Bad Lombard! Scaring the young masters! Lombard is a terrible elf!"
Ian's mouth twitched as he watched the spectacle. Is this for real?
"Excuse me, could you stop that?" Ian said, unable to hold back. "I don't have the kind of hobby where I enjoy watching someone hit themselves."
Lombard froze immediately, looking up at Ian with wide, adoring eyes. "Lombard must listen to Master Ian! Do you have any commands for Lombard, Master Ian?"
Ian sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose. He glanced over at Dumbledore. "Has he always been like this?"
"Lombard is very loyal," Dumbledore replied with an amused smile. "He's simply a little too excitable."
Dumbledore explained further. "House-elves are extraordinarily devoted and serve their masters for generations. If there's anything you need, you can ask Lombard to handle it."
Here, Dumbledore's tone grew softer. "By tradition, after your parents passed away, Lombard should have taken care of both of you. However..." Dumbledore sighed heavily. "At the time, your circumstances were very dangerous, and it was not safe for you to live in the Potter mansion. So, Lombard's responsibilities were limited to guarding the estate and maintaining it."
Ian nodded and understood Dumbledore's arrangement in his heart.
After all, Voldemort was still lurking somewhere. If he and Harry had lived in the old Potter house, they would have been easy targets for Voldemort's followers.
"Master Ian, Master Harry, are you thirsty or hungry? Lombard will prepare food for you!" Lombard said excitedly, his large eyes shining as he looked at the two brothers.
Before Ian could respond, Lombard continued in a rush, "No, no! Master Ian and Master Harry have just returned, so they must get familiar with the manor first! Lombard will take the two masters to explore the manor, and then prepare food!"
"Stop! Lombard!" Ian raised his voice slightly, trying to calm the overly excited house-elf. He pressed his fingers to his temple, feeling a slight headache coming on. "Can you calm down for a moment?"
Lombard immediately clamped his mouth shut and stared at Ian with wide, anxious eyes.
Taking a deep breath, Ian said, "Harry and I do need to get familiar with the manor first, but there's something else I want to know today." His tone grew firmer. "Are you the one maintaining the Potter family's properties?"
Hearing Ian's question, Lombard straightened his small frame proudly and puffed out his chest. "Yes, Master Ian! Since Master James passed away, the Potter family's business has always been maintained by Lombard! Lombard has taken great care of the family's properties and has not been lazy at all!"
Ian raised an eyebrow, studying the proud little house-elf in front of him. "It's always been you? How have you managed everything?"
The Potter family had a vast array of businesses spanning various fields. For Lombard to handle them all without any collapse or chaos was no small feat.
"Master Ian, Lombard has only been following the plans left by Master James and Madam Lily before their passing," Lombard explained, scratching his oversized head with a sheepish smile. "Lombard's ancestors have served the Potter family for generations. We know the Potter family's properties inside and out."
Lombard's expression suddenly turned nervous, and he quickly added, "Master Ian, Lombard has only been managing the properties on behalf of the Potter family. Lombard would never dream of coveting even a single Knut from the Potter family!"
"Lombard has been waiting for the two young masters to come home!" Lombard said excitedly, his large eyes gleaming with joy. "Now that the two young masters are home, Lombard can finally hand over the Potter family's properties to them!"
Looking at the loyal house-elf in front of him, Ian felt a mix of emotions.
House-elves... so loyal and dedicated!
"Ehm..." Ian's mouth twitched slightly as he tried to find the right words. "Lombard, how about you take us on a tour of the manor first? As for the properties... we'll talk about that later."
Better to delay discussing the properties until the "old bee" was gone. Ian wasn't worried that Dumbledore would covet the Potter family's wealth—he just didn't want to deal with that piercing gaze while discussing finances.
Ian turned to Dumbledore and asked politely, "Professor Dumbledore, would you like to come along?"
"I don't think that will be necessary," Dumbledore replied with a kind smile, shaking his head. "I still have some matters to attend to at Hogwarts, so I won't intrude on your family time."
He stood, preparing to leave, but paused to add, "I'll return later to bring you both back to the castle."
"Alright, Professor," Ian nodded. "We'll wait for you here tonight."
Dumbledore smiled and nodded, then turned and left the Potter old house.
Seeing Dumbledore disappear at the door, Ian withdrew his gaze and looked at Lombard: "Okay, Lombard, you can take us to get familiar with the manor now."
Lombard was immediately happy when he heard Ian's words, and took Ian and Harry around the manor.
