Chapter 227: Retreat with Whole Body
In the dead of night, under the thick moonlight, the guard was tight around the valley with open views, making it nearly impossible to infiltrate without any alarm. Upstairs, someone was comfortably watching the computer, oblivious to the fact that Ghost had arrived, let alone at his side. When he finally sensed danger and turned his head, all he saw was a massive black shadow pouncing on him like a mountain. His face instantly turned pale, his eyes filled with sheer terror, and he didn't even get the chance to sound the alarm.
When people witness the unbelievable, their brains often freeze, unable to process what they are seeing. Of course, they also snap back to reality quickly. The time it takes to go from brain reaction to bodily defense varies from person to person. Those with professional training might only need the blink of an eye. But that blink was all Luo Zheng needed to execute a close-range fatal blow.
Luo Zheng pounced like lightning, covering the man's mouth with one hand while the other hand's blade flashed, delivering a chilling slash like a whiplash, wearing the grin of Death God as it cut directly into the man's throat. It silenced any attempt at alarm before a gushing stream of blood spurted out—air poured through the cut, and the gushing blood bubbled out.
The man desperately clutched his throat trying to stem the flow of blood, his face conveying shock as he stared at Luo Zheng, as though trying to scream something. Unfortunately, he couldn't make a sound. His life force swiftly faded, and his body slumped onto the chair, his blue eyes still open in reluctant despair, filled with endless confusion and disbelief, dying with eyes wide open.
Luo Zheng glanced at the screen, which showed feeds from several cameras; the man had been monitoring the surroundings. Checking the angles, he realized that the cameras covered almost every access route that one could use to infiltrate. If it weren't for his reliance on disguise and taking hours to crawl in like a snail, he wouldn't have escaped detection.
This guy was the command center, ready to direct the patrol teams below through his headset at the first sign of trespass and combined with heavy machine guns, it was a terrifying trap. Luo Zheng felt his scalp tingle at the thought, grateful for his extra caution and prudence. It was no wonder this organization was ranked eighth in the assassin world; these assassins were indeed no simple matter.
Luo Zheng put on the headset; it was silent inside except for the occasional sound of a wolf dog. Looking at the monitoring feed, apart from the occasional patrol team, there was nothing else. Luo Zheng quickly checked the computer hard drive, finding it completely empty—as expected, no one would store secrets on a computer.
Would an expert be able to extract anything valuable from this computer? Luo Zheng considered as he unplugged all the cables and tucked the computer into a bag next to him. He then strapped it to his chest and searched the body: a gun, two clips, some cash, and a passport.
He stowed everything in the bag; this was no place to linger. Moving quickly to the staircase entrance, his eyes involuntarily glanced towards the rooftop access; it looked pitch-black, probably with the door closed. The rooftop housed a gunman, but Luo Zheng decided against escalating and descended the stairs to the first floor instead. Crawling out the window again, he hugged the corner of the wall and moved forward. After waiting a moment and seeing no one paying attention to his direction, he burst forth swiftly, ducking into the shadows of a stable to observe calmly.
If he withdrew the same way he came in, it would take more than three hours, and dawn was approaching fast. Time was running out, and he needed to locate where Lan Xue and the others were detained quickly. If he waited until tomorrow, he would be completely at a disadvantage. It seemed he had no choice but to make a brash entry.
At that moment, Luo Zheng heard the snorting of several horses nearby. A stable lantern was hanging beside him, which sparked an idea. He swiftly untied all the horses' reins, opened the pen, and took down the stable lantern. Using its fire, he ignited a handful of dry straw, and the flames quickly grew. Luo Zheng looked at the horses apologetically, offering a wry smile that was quickly replaced by a firm resolve. To rescue Lan Xue and the others, Luo Zheng was willing to do whatever it took.
The horses' tails quickly caught fire. In pain and panic, they neighed loudly and bolted out of the stable. The patrol team, startled by the sight of the frenzied horses, all ran forward to intercept them. Luo Zheng calmly watched as the last horse charged out and felt the patrol's focus shift to the disturbance. Then, he knocked over the stable lantern, casting aside his disguise, and dashed in the opposite direction.
In the darkness of the night, the patrol was consumed with intercepting the horses and didn't realize that someone had already infiltrated the area and was now withdrawing in the opposite direction. The dry straw in the stable was highly flammable, and the fire grew rapidly. Engrossed in fighting the fire, the patrol had little thought to spare for their tight security—and no one believed an intruder had come.
Seizing the opportunity, Luo Zheng slipped away, and under the cover of night, fled across the open terrain into the dense forest. With the dense trees as his shield, Luo Zheng breathed a sigh of relief and took a detour towards the location where the car was hidden. Half an hour later, Luo Zheng arrived at the spot. The Ferrari was still there. He cautiously surveyed his surroundings for danger before approaching the car.
He started the ignition, revved up the engine, and drove off. Luo Zheng's face was stone-cold, but inside, he was extremely anxious. The night was well advanced, and there had been no trace of Lan Xue and the others. Luo Zheng drove towards Mogan Town, and half an hour later, he swerved the steering wheel, hiding the car behind a roadside mound, turned off the engine, opened the door, and then the trunk.
Inside the trunk, the boss, dazed from the lack of air and the bumpy ride, looked at Luo Zheng with a face full of anger. Luo Zheng, enraged, turned cold and stabbed the boss in the thigh, then quickly withdrew the knife and demanded icily, "You dared to deceive me?"
"Ow!" The boss cried out in agony and asked in alarm, "How did I deceive you?"
"You said the base was empty, that there was no one there—it was a trap. If I hadn't run fast, I would have been dead for sure. You wanted to use the trap to kill me. Very well, I shall oblige you," Luo Zheng said coldly, his face filled with murderous intent. He looked like an angry primeval beast as he glared furiously at the boss.
The boss was terrified by Luo Zheng's ferocious demeanor and quickly protested, "That's impossible. They were definitely there."
Luo Zheng could tell that the other man didn't appear to be lying, and responded coldly, "With the rate you're bleeding, you have an hour before you bleed out and die. Unless you bandage it now, that is. So, you have one hour to find my people, or you can go ahead and die."
"You?" The boss turned ashen, cold sweat breaking out on his forehead. He glanced at the blood on his leg, realizing the truth in Luo Zheng's words, and a fear of death surged within him. After a moment of thought, he hurriedly said, "I need to make a call, quick, give me the phone. My father will never just watch me die."
