Chapter 119: Intense Sniping
"Whoosh whoosh!" Two bullets flew forth, striking the ground near Luo Zheng's feet. Had he not rapidly advanced a few steps just moments before, those bullets would have hit him squarely in the lower back. Luo Zheng was startled, pushed himself up with force, and continued his mad sprint. After running another five or six steps, he quickly darted in another direction, his body bent like an arrow off its line.
As he ran, another sniper bullet, searing hot, zipped past, narrowly missing his back. Had Luo Zheng not instinctively dived towards a nearby hollow to take cover and catch his breath before running again, that shot would have been fatal. Huddling in the hollow, Luo Zheng curled up as tightly as possible to minimize his visibility to the sniper. With tingling scalp, he glanced back at the path he had come, where the sniper bullet had carved a fierce-looking hole in the ground.
The enemy's relentless shooting enraged Luo Zheng. Hearing the dense gunfire in the distance, he knew his comrades were in danger and awaiting his support. Clenching his teeth, he aimed his rifle forward, preparing to locate the enemy sniper. A sniper bullet from the sniper team whistled by, striking right in front of him. Luo Zheng recoiled in shock and quickly pulled back.
His position now compromised, the situation was highly unfavorable for him. Biting his lip, Luo Zheng forced himself to calm down. He looked around, estimated the enemy sniper's likely position, and decided that the only way to seize the initiative was to rush to the mountaintop. The enemy sniper's hiding place was at a lower altitude than his own mountain, giving him a geographical advantage once he reached the summit. The enemy sniper would have blind spots, while he would not.
With this in mind, Luo Zheng took a deep breath, grasped his rifle tightly, and with a loud shout, dashed out from behind cover once more. Harnessing all his strength, he raced up the steep path using the Bullet Avoidance Steps, making the rugged terrain feel as flat as a plain. However, this time Luo Zheng did not rush straight up but instead circled around to the back of the mountain.
Perhaps his sudden change of direction disoriented the enemy sniper, who hesitated for two seconds. In those two crucial seconds, Luo Zheng swiftly covered more than ten meters and used the irregular mounds on the mountainside as cover. By the time the sniper reacted and fired, Luo Zheng had already vanished around the back of the mountain.
Avoiding the enemy sniper's line of sight, Luo Zheng did not let his guard down and quickly headed towards the mountaintop. He was acutely aware that once the sniper lost track of him, he would likely target Luo Zheng's comrades below. Reaching the summit even a minute sooner could mean added safety for his comrades.
Luo Zheng ascended the fifteen-meter slope in one go and swiftly surveyed the surrounding terrain. He concealed himself behind a higher slope that offered a clear view of the situation below. In a short span, his comrades had nearly all been pinned down by enemy fire, in grave danger, and lacking the strength to retaliate. The situation was dire.
Luo Zheng, having no time to locate the enemy sniper, decisively aimed at an enemy machine gunner and shot him in the head. After the enemy's machine gun fell silent, Luo Zheng was about to continue searching for targets when another sniper bullet struck the dirt mound in front of him, kicking up a large clump of earth. Startled momentarily, Luo Zheng quickly steadied himself, thought of his comrades in imminent danger, clenched his teeth, and prepared to continue sniping. Right when the machine gun started firing again, he furiously aimed at the machine gunner and delivered another headshot, followed by a shot that struck the machine gun itself.
"Whoosh whoosh!" Three sniper bullets came his way, all hitting the dirt mound in front of him and causing another large chunk to collapse. Seeing this, Luo Zheng sneered coldly, undisturbed. The two shots clearly indicated that the enemy sniper's position was too low to hit him. Feeling reassured, Luo Zheng saw people starting to rush downhill. Calmly and swiftly shifting his rifle, he began to snipe.
"Whoosh whoosh whoosh!" Three shots fired, and each was a headshot. The three individuals leading the charge fell dead, and those behind quickly dropped to the ground for cover, no longer daring to brazenly advance. However, these people overlooked one fact: Luo Zheng's hiding spot was at a higher elevation, allowing him a clear view of the enemy concealed below.
"Swoosh, swoosh, swoosh!" Luo Zheng fired rapidly, his powerful sniper bullets hitting the enemy accurately, spraying arcs of blood. The remaining enemies utterly panicked and retreated as if flying back, no longer suppressed by machine gun fire. The Gardener seized the chance to breathe, fired without hesitation at the retreating enemies, and then quickly ducked back into cover.
Just as the Gardener ducked back, countless bullets densely pelted toward him, forming a barrage. Though no longer suppressed by the machine gun, the sheer number of enemies and their concentrated firepower were terrifying. Luo Zheng's face was cold as he quickly searched for targets, soon spotting a leader-like figure yelling commands. His icy gaze flickered then vanished, decisively aiming, considered for a moment, and lowered the barrel slightly—an injured officer would create more panic, a dead one would only make these bandits crazier.
"Swoosh!" The bullet roared off, carrying Luo Zheng's fury, tearing through the spatial barriers, tracing a dashed line in the Void, and accurately striking the officer's left shoulder, making flesh burst open as the officer fell screaming.
Luo Zheng's icy face showed no emotion, completely immersed in the world of sniping—calm, decisive. He continued seeking prey. Soon, his bullets ran out. Luo Zheng noticed the enemy sniper was still firing at him, intent on not stopping until the earth barriers shielding him were broken. Luo Zheng's lips curled into a cold sneer, he quickly reloaded and rolled to another location.
This time, Luo Zheng did not shoot immediately, but calmly searched for the enemy sniper. Perhaps because too many snipers were firing simultaneously, the enemy sniper was not worried about being exposed. Under the intense gunfire, it was challenging to distinguish who was the sniper.
Luo Zheng observed for a while, saw the enemy tried to charge from several locations, putting his comrades in a very disadvantageous position. It was a moment when a sniper's fire support was needed, but Luo Zheng did not move—he continued calmly searching for the enemy sniper—no one would survive if he didn't take down the enemy sniper first.
Another sniper rifle sounded. This time Luo Zheng observed clearly and quickly pinpointed the opponent's position, a guy dressed similar to those around him, highly concealed among the crowd, only the muzzle was exposed, indeed difficult to distinguish. Luo Zheng watched the hidden location of this person coldly, patiently waiting.
"Da da da!" The gunfire below increased, mixed with the voices of Shusheng and others cheering each other on.
His comrades needed fire support. Should he continue hunting the enemy sniper or provide fire support? Luo Zheng was torn but made a decision quickly. Considering Shusheng and the others' combat capabilities, they would not face a life-threatening situation in the short term. Not taking down the enemy sniper meant no one would get away, and only by quickly killing the enemy sniper could everyone possibly survive.
Thinking this, Luo Zheng completely calmed down, his icy gaze firmly locked on the enemy sniper. Suddenly, Luo Zheng noticed the adversary was about to change shooting positions, the muzzle retracting and a figure crouching, dashing to one side. Seizing the rare opportunity, Luo Zheng pulled the trigger without hesitation.
